A new video for Boat-ED from yours truly ... :) I must say, I don't think of a rabbit and a tree when I do the bowline. I usually say the snake comes out of the hole, goes around the log and back down the hole. But, for this video, I thought I'd use the standard rabbit and tree.

Nice video but I noticed a few things… - Your "Bowline" is actually a "Cowboy Bowline"… - Your "Sheet Bend" should have the working end portion of the bight of the red rope on the topside when tying as done with the blue rope.

Cowboy Bowline doesn't matter. However, the sheet bend does as it is less secure when in the asymmetrical or left handed fashion.

some people might know the square knot as a reef knot (correct me if I'm wrong)

The bowline will shake loose when not under load. The tail should be on the inside for a traditional bowline. On the outside is the "cowboy" bowline. The sheet bend's working ends should be on the same side of the knot.

Depends on the use. I use the cowboy bowline to picket our horses, since the tail in the inside is quite inconvenient.

AND I have never had this knot come loose, or had it untieable when a horse hauls back with all it's might.

Not only is your Bowline wrong , so is your sheet bend knot ! Both ends of rope should always be either up or down together, ! That what you show will slip ! And your bowline end should always be on the inside of the big loop !

I agree with D.E.K. Outdoors. Both the bowline and sheet bend as illustrated are wrong. The false versions shown in the video can slip, especially with slippery ropes, and are potentially dangerous.

at scouts we call the fisherman's bend a round turn two half hitches which really confuses me so it's nice to know a shorter name thanx

+Benjamin Wilson the anchor bend and round turn and 2 1/2 hitches are identical except the round turn does not do the 1st half hitch in between the object and the round turn, but outside on the standing part

The sheet bend is when you need to tie two dissimilar items together, as in a sheet (sail) to a rope. The same knot is known as a weaver's knot when identical cords are tied, as in a loom. Same knot, really...

We use rope to tie them on buoys (aka marks for rounding) cause the coach will need to put it in the sea and drag it up again so it's lighter and easier

Chain is good. But, perhaps you want rig a spare anchor off your stern, keep you from swinging into shoals. Or, rig a quick kedge. Also, the anchor bend can be used to bend line onto the last link of anchor chain, though this should be considered a temporary arrangement, as the wear on the line might be bad.

I noticed, Tying Boating Knots, yet he calls it Rope. There is no Rope on Boat, it's A Line.

We should stop showing the reef knot. We should really stop showing it w/2 different lines. You didn't mention reefing, nor tying your shoes, so, no point in showing the knot. The sheet bend w/the red bight (not bend) flipped up the right way, and the double. Mention sturdier bends (figure 8) when lives are at stake.

Bowline is not correct. It starts with a b shape not a d.

+Admiral Ackbar and the bowline is wrong (tag end should be inside the loop, and the last one is an anchor bend though for some reason its called a fisherman's bend

+ Jim Kernicky "... the last one is an anchor bend..." It's a bend if it's attaching one rope to another rope. If it's attaching a rope to a pole, ring, rail, etc. it's a hitch...thus "anchor hitch."

Wrong bowline. A proper bowline should have the end come out in the middle.

That is NOT a bowline.. The sheet bend also has the bitter ends in the wrong place... Stop sharing misinformation.

I think your knotting is pretty pore the bowline is started with a half hitch not a loop and then you cocked it up by going the wrong way around the standing part ,before you try to teach people how to tie knots you should at least learn them yourself.
