+blargish27 To that I say lets do some math. It looks like they went from a starting velocity of 33m/sec(74mph) to 0m/sec in about 0.5 secs. So, doing some math we arrive that they experienced about 6.7g's of acceleration over 0.5 secs. That number is pretty high but its not even close to lethal. I know its been like 7 months since your comment but I saw it and was bored :).

The Cameraman did a brilliant job of catching and holding the boat perfectly in frame, plus he was talking with the pilot and producer at same time. The crew were battered but managed a long night in the bar that evening. The drivers life was saved by realising what was about to happen and ducking down just in time. His kevlar race seat had its back broken low down, the forces were incredible. The boat was doing at least 74mph and stopped within a very few feet. The boats back breaking by his feet absorbed some of the impact (lucky he didn't get trapped in the huge crack) plus the driver was wearing a very bulky life jacket with proper chest padding. He was hurt, cracked ribs and very battered left thigh, but nothing Guinness and ibuprofen in that order couldn't cure. The final verdict was driver error, the gearbox and prop acting as a brake and tipping the bow down. The boat was unfamiliar to the driver, he preferred the flatter deck of the 18' version but recognises his error. The West Country News next day called it a 'death crash', he had to ring a lot of people to advise the contrary. Credit to the Co-Driver, also battered, but he is still racing 20 years on, the driver retired and took up triathlon....he was after all used to swimming in adverse conditions and preferred the lesser impact when things went wrong.

@@dwlopez57 That's not true, the water acts sort of like a crash barrier which dissipates some of the energy but it's still like hitting a wall at 70mph. I used to build and work on racing boats like these and they're basically just a metal tube frame wrapped in fibreglass. There are no impact absorbing crash structures, just a racing seat/harness to prevent you getting ejected and a neck brace to stop your head snapping forward/backwards. If the boat was to disintegrate like a car you've got no protection from hitting the pieces in an open cockpit so it is important that the hull stays in one buoyant piece long enough for the support crew to reach you if you've been knocked unconscious and can't get out. I've seen them bent like a banana and twisted like a corkscrew from big dives/rolls, internal injuries such as dislodged organs aren't uncommon. Faster boats such as offshore powerboats have a closed safety cell for the driver/throttle man so they can disintegrate and dissipate the energy so I suspect that's where the confusion is perhaps coming from

I have a gut feeling it's because the helicopter suddenly pulled away creating a difference in the air pressure that caused the boat to 'fly'. Note the helicopter is very close to the boat and at high speed the boat goes faster with the increased downforce created by the helicopter. When it suddenly moves away, the boat didn't have any time to react to the air pressure change

Some math for who asks: they stopped in around 7 meters (give or take), going from 74 knots (137 km/h or 38 m/s) to 0. Assuming a constant deceleration (which is not, but its' ok for estimate purposes) here are the equations for space and speed: SPACE = 0.5*DECELERATION*TIME^2 SPEED = DECELERATION*TIME What we know is SPACE = 7, SPEED = 38 We solve the second equation for TIME: TIME = SPEED / DECELERATION Then we plug TIME in this new form, inside the first equation: SPACE = 0.5*DECELERATION*(SPEED/DECELERATION)^2 Finally we solve for DECELERATION: DECELERATION = 0.5*(SPEED^2) / SPACE = 0.5*(38^2) / 7 = 103 m/s^2 = *10 G* (give or take)

@@Oldgold-zo3et Technically you're correct, and still what's referred to as a whiplash trauma is being hit from the back. One of the reasons is that you don't see it coming so you can't prepare and your neck is loose and prone to a whiplash. Crashing frontally into something you usually see it a second or two earlier, which allows you to stiffen your body and neck, so the whiplash effect is less severe. It's the impact with the steering wheel, windscreen or whatever is in front of you that's dangerous...

this exact thing happened to my grandpa, he raced jersey speed skiffs years and years ago and his boat suddenly went up then shot deep into the water, knocked him out cold and knocked every last tooth out of his mouth, he's all good now but the water can seriously be no joke at high speeds

So I was around 19 ish and my buddy had a Sea Doo Sportster boat. We decided to scare the girls with us like it threw me out at top speed. Big mistake, I dove in at that speed. All that force landed on my back in the water. As I floated in shock from the pain I hoped and remember thinking if they can rescue me I’ll only be paralyzed and not drown. As I absorbed the thoughts and pain I started moving then I began to think hey I’m notparalyzed now I just gotta save myself from drowning. I surfaced and as everyone came back to me not knowing what I just went through I got in the boat like it was all cool. Another lake lesson learned. I’m lucky to be alive after all the cliffs I’ve dove off of and youthful ignorance. Clearly Gods Grace and Mercy.
