Fun video. Look at you, Jim, using that drone! Game changer! Can’t wait to see how you use it going forward. You two are cute! Happy boating.

Thanks for your videos. At your height of 6'6", can you comment on your boat shopping strategy for headroom? It seems that finding headroom measurements is difficult at best. The marketing seems to focus on saying things like "spacious headroom" instead of posting the measurements. It would be great if there was a website that sorted by cabin headroom...

Todd, Wouldn’t that be nice. I’m not aware of any general source of information regarding headroom on boats. I think to get a boat with enough headroom it would have to be custom built or just bigger. We have friends who own a 110’ yacht, and it has 9’ of headroom on all 3 floors, but then again, their boat is in a different world from Sea Venture. Thanks for watching, Jim

Hi, Jim and Rosy... Enjoy your videos, especially the refit and tech talks! Question for you (not sure if it has been asked and answered before)...did you consider a "Gyro Stabilizer" when researching your options for stabilizing Sea Venture? Cheers!

We are glad you are enjoying the videos. We have been ask and I am working on a detailed written analysis of how we came to choose Paravanes for our stabilization. A Gyro was carefully investigated. Without giving away too much of my write up :), here was what we came up with when looking at a Gyro: We looked at and received a detailed quote from Sea Keeper. They pointed out the most common disappointment following installation was that boat owners chose too small of a unit. The correct unit is based on both boat length and weight. Sea Venture weighs, when fully loaded, about 45 tons. This makes the Sea Keeper 16 the correct model. The unit cost $99,000 without installation. It weighs over 2,000 lbs, is about 36" x 36". To fit it in Sea Venture, it would require being completely dismantled and reassembled in the engine room, or taking the salon floor apart. (A little Sea Venture secret here - Our salon floor has two 36" by 72" hatches under the carpet in case you ever need to pull an engine - but there is still a lot of wiring, insulation, plumbing, etc that would have to be moved out of the way) While our engine room is quite large, :), the only place it would fit would be between and in front of the two engines, and then it would fit only in concept. Reality may be a different matter all together. I think when completed, the total cost would be about $150,000. While our total refit is quite a bit of money, about $45,000 of it was rebuilding and strengthening the upper deck. So the paravanes come in at half this price, with the crows nest through in for good measure. When we first started our review we set some basic goals for ourselves. With our plans to continue to cruise to very remote places, having systems on board that we could trouble shoot and/or fix was a very important consideration. When not the case, then redundancy is the plan, (ie: 2 radars, 2 auto pilots, etc). The Gyro is not realistically boat owner repairable. Also, they use a fair amount of power. Your generator must be running for them to operate. For us, if we have to cruise with the generator running 24/7 then our fuel burn goes up by 30%, resulting in a significant change in cruising range. With requiring the generator, it means that if the SeaKeeper or Generator has a problem you are without stabilization. Also, they take, what I think, is a long time to get up to speed. The gyro takes about 45 minutes to get up to the full spinning speed before they start to work. In a nutshell this is what we learned when looking at Gyro's. I hope this answers your question and again, thanks for watching. Jim and Rosy Addington M/V Sea Venture ps - Keep watching! We are in Port Townsend right now and the new superstructure was put in place by a crane today! Another 10 days or so and the refit will be completed.

Thank you for taking the time to reply with such a comprehensive answer. I fully understand your reasoning behind your decision (particularly, costs etc involved). They're not for everyone. Thanks again and I look forward to your future videos. PS. I look forward to offering you both a glass of wine when (if) you venture to Cairns, Australia !! Cheers! Claude.

That was a terrific video! Great perspective of the trip. Makes me want to move FlyWright up there for a summer...as long as it doesn't rain. Definitely have to time your currents there!

Thanks for watching and commenting. We enjoy making the videos and connecting up with other boats. It's gradually turning into an out of control hobby! While we were cruising up we just thought it was a great time to highlight the impact of the currents for a trawler. For years, when we were working, it seemed we just had a short window to go, so you went when it was time regardless of the currents. Now that we are retired, we always try to time our travel to take advantage of the currents. It sure does make a difference. Jim and Rosy

It's the Pt. Wilson Rip - when the current around the light house is ebbing at 3-4 knots with a strong wind coming off the strait, the area will develop whirlpools and a steep 4-5 foot chop. Thanks for watching, Jim and Rosy

Thanks for watching and commenting. Our main navigation is Nobeltec Odyssey. It's a PC based system. We have it running on a 27" Dell Touch Screen Computer. For a back up and planning in the salon we also have Nobeltec on 2 laptops. In the pilothouse we also have our Furuno NavNet navigation system and we have an Ipad Pro with Navionic Charts as well. In the dinghy we have a Garmin navigation system. We have used Nobeltec since it's inception in the 90's and almost always use it as a primary navigation. You can find more info on Nobeltec at www.nobeltec.com. Hope this helps, Jim and Rosy Addington
