@@e.ztreezcanada3601There's another video on KZfaq right now, that shows an almost identical device, that's called the Ikaros line thrower. It can fire a line that's similar in diameter up to 1,000 feet, and is used to try and throw a line to swimmers that need to be rescued, or (at least that video claims) small boats that are in danger and need a line thrown to them too. It can hold a maximum of 450 pounds.

*I'll explain: The guy is holding an external grounding wire blasted out with an explosive charge. See how it nearly reaches shore? When the boat is on fire, the built in sprinkler systems will activate, but as they are electrically operated, once the sprinkler water puts out the fire it will come in contact with the boats electrical system, and will cause an electrocutionical contidion for everyone aboard. This external wire, once it reaches land, will then ground the boat and safeltly direct any short circuits through the wire to the land. This is primarily used by boat crews in movies and TV shows because its entirely fake and I just made all this up.*

Line throwing apparatus refers to a class of life-saving appliances (LSA) that are found on every vessel. It is used to throw weighted ropes known as lines over long distances. It uses a variety of launching methods and can be used for numerous maritime applications. From hauling supplies, connecting ships, and providing supply lines, to aiding in rescue operations, line throwing apparatus are an essential component of any ship, irrespective of whether it traverses the oceans or stays within domestic waters. These apparatuses also have applications outside the maritime domain but are relatively uncommon due to the availability of better-suited line throwing equipment. The line throwing apparatus is kept on the bridge in general, as this is the main control centre of the ship. Specialized container units are placed for stowing the apparatus on board. The unit consists of a rope attached to a head that is coiled within a storage cylinder. The cylinder arrangement is spring-loaded and is provided with a trigger for activation. The line is mainly used for logistical and rescue operations on ships. For logistical support, the line is launched towards another ship, or towards a floating supply crate. In the case of a supply crate, the line is fitted with hooks that can latch on to the package and safely tow it towards the ship. In the case of another ship or supply vessel, the line is launched and then picked up by the other ship. Other lines are then passed across to make the connection secure. After this, crates and packages of goods are hauled across the connection lines. Lastly, the lines are disengaged from the supply vessel and are hauled back to the ship. In the case of rescue operations, stranded and floating individuals can catch the line and be hauled onboard a ship. The line creates support across which a buoy or life jacket can be sent. The line is launched such that it overshoots the position of the sailor, and it is then towed back allowing them to grab on to the line. The head of the line is weighted and care must be taken while launching it so that it does not make contact with the individual and cause injury. Short answer. It remains unutilized in the occurrence of any of the five types of fires.

For those wondering; this is a line thrower. You shoot it towards the land or another boat during an emergency. The other boat or people on land then tie that rope to something sturdy and you swim in on the rope. Yes you may need a rope to swim to help. Ocean currents are wild.

Okay. Coming from a former naval servicemember, having yourself an emergency line thrower (says in the video description after pressing the 3 dots in the upper right) that seemingly launches a line what looks to be about 500 yards or more out would be situationally useful, I question just how bad of a situation you'd have to be in and how specific it would have to be in order to find some use for this. If it is a situation where other vessels are already nearby, then some form of life saving measures are already being taken, and launching a line which could tangle up the propellers of smaller craft doesnt seem ideal. In rough seas, maybe it would serve as a guide from one ship to another, but not for very long. As far as a vessel fire goes, Id much rather have fire extinguishers on smaller vessels or, on larger ones, proper damage control teams that are trained to combat fires. Anyways, cool idea, but not too much practicality.

For the people that are wondering what this is, its a line thrower and they typically toss a line about a min of 1000 feet. they can be used from ship to ship or from land to land or ship to land. there often used to toss stuff across rivers and canyons for working purposes. that would be land to land. its probably on the boat for safety device. Standard equipment on larger boats, it runs off a rocket fuel canister!!! EDIT!!! Everyone asking about how it helps in a fire, IT DOES NOT PUT OUT FIRES AT ALL!!! If you need to put out a fire grab a fire extinguisher!!! i dont know why they title the vids as they do!! i have used it for getting cables across rivers, i would assume that you could shoot it to land or to another boat and keep distance and use the string to pull yourself or a life raft along to the boat or to shore. It is standard safety equipment on larger boats. if people have questions on who what when where and how please google it, there is no shortage of info.
