Footage live and direct from the Herbert Woods webcam. Looks like a vintage boat from the Martham Ferry boatyard. Apologies for the rubbish

I went though in November 1969 on my way up to Hickling, childhood memories. It rained all night and on the way down I didn't want to risk the bridge. The bridge pilot loaded the boat with four mates and went through at full speed. A boat sits lower when at speed. Trust the pilots.

I can remember hearing about flooding the bilges of a hire boat, loading a few people on board and dragging out what was left of the roof rails etc.

God, how hard can it be? Just get 10 blokes to sit in it, it'll sit lower in the water then as if my magic, it'll get under!

All correct regarding the ownership of the stuck cruiser. I was there by the bridge on a yacht with the mast lowered, waiting to pass through at 8.00am, which was low water. The water levels had been really high that week and Potter Heigham bridge was only passable - just - bang on low water. At 7.30am two blokes arrived from the yard and headed towards the bridge... and promptly got stuck. It took about 50 minutes to free the boat, by which time the tide was rising again (the big flooded area by the bridge pilots' cabin was expanding by the minute). We cast off as soon as the cruiser was free and just made it through. If we hadn't been able to make it we would have been stuck until the next day.

It looks like a SIlver Jubilee out of Martham Boatbuilding and Development that's stuck, and a Judith (from the same yard that's pulling it out. MD insists on a pilot taking you through Potter. I agree with Peter Smith that it was probably yard staff at the helms. One year (Sept 1968?) we were out on a Judith and they loaded a few extra guys on to get us a bit of extra room.

It seems that the boat had been in Herbert Woods boatyard for a couple of days due to the high tides so it wasn’t the hirers who got it stuck it was the boatyard guys trying to retrieve it 😂😂

@@harveysmith100 I'm not the one stuck under the bridge . Of course what is meant by my comment is that the only answer is to lower the boat . I have seen this done at Ludham Bridge by putting barrels on the boat and filling them with water plus having extra bodies on board .

What were they thinking. Why build a bridge that low. No wonder boats get stuck under it. I blame the planners.
@thedroneguy1233 жыл бұрын
It’s been there for generations it’s a listed bridge. Officially you need a bridge pilot to navigate it. Over the years with high tides it’s been more and more difficult to get under with anything higher than about 6ft airdraught but years ago most could get under

Looks like a Martham Boat & Development Co craft who's yard is just a bit upstream of the bridge - they are the only ones to get regularly under the bridge at the best of times & as it was being pushed & pulled it was likely it was yard staff involved
