In today's video we will go over the three most common ways to pull up to a dock in your wake boat, and when to use them!
This is the next installment of my Boating 101 series that is trying to help new boaters navigate some of the things that may be scary or not intuitive when you first get started.

Great video. Love the points that if it isn’t working, just back off and try again. One thing I work on is telling everyone to only go to/from the boat if you can comfortably “step”. We never jump.

Ya, my husband who didn't want to get wet, took a swim when as I was docking because we were coming in a tad hot so I put it in reverse and my husband leaped to the dock but because I put it in reverse he didn't make it and went swimming. Both of our faults really, bad communication! I live in Utah and already have spring fever because it gets us that much closer to summer!! 🥰

The key with a v-drive or direct drive is to know which way it will pull when you hit reverse and how much pull to that direction the boat experiences. I had a Nautique DD that pulled to the spotters side and it really didn’t pull hard but my new MOOMBA pulls hard to the drivers side. Planning is key and baring in mind wind direction is important as well. Your point about speed is great advice...slow and controlled is way better than the alternative which can be costly in more ways then one.
@Mike-In-O-Town
@Mike-In-O-Town 4 жыл бұрын
Agree with this completely. Head to one end of the lake that is protected from wind and is smooth, then throw the boat in reverse with medium throttle and back up maybe 50 feet to determine which way the boat is going to pull and how hard it will pull. Knowing this and practicing will allow you the control and confidence to do whatever you need to do. When you think you have it down pat, try doing a 10 point turn in the middle of a tight canal.

I’m 70, wife is 64, we never had a boat but bought a 16’ Smoker Craft fishing boat in March. Your clarity of explanation is excellent, no bs, to the point and it has been a great help to us. BTW, 25 years ago for 12 years I was Chief Advertising Photographer for Lowe’s Home Centers. This was before digital cameras were in use and everything was shot on 4x5 or 8x10” sheet film on a view camera where you looked at an image that was backwards and upside down. It takes a certain way of looking at things to be able to direct someone to move something around in a scene for you. I began to think that way normally. Consequently, I have found backing the boat trailer or any other trailer rather confusing. The solution for for us has been to have my wife do all the trailer maneuvering. She does really well, I do all the rest. The was the first video of this I saw, I immediately said to Carol, “you gotta see this woman, she’s great,” We thank you.

Hi Chantel, I would prefer that you hold a bow line or stern line when stepping off the boat as you are the captain and should be in control of the boat at all times. You can get caught out with current wind and dock moving. Also, I was waiting for you to show how to ferry the boat. Move it sideways. André in Sydney

I have been driving boats for a long time, but looking to get my first towboat. I am coming from I/Os so I can reverse however I want. One thing I never see in these videos is what to do when you have to dock on the port side with a tow boat. Since they won't really reverse that way without a thruster.

This is a good video with easier docking techniques if you are a newbie but the second technique will not be possible or very helpful if it's a strong wind or current. If that's the case then I go towards the dock in fairly high speed to not lose steering ability and then when I'm close I throw the motor hard over towards the dock and but in a kick of reverse, this will not only stop the boat's momentum but also bring in the stern. You will not be able to pull a bigger boat in windy conditions, you'll have to maneuver it.

Hey Chantel, I love your channel. Keep up the hard work! I currently have a 07 nautique sv 211 and we are looking to upgrade to a newer surf boat. I love nautique. I would like to get an early G23 but every video I see looks like the wave is so short. I saw your video with the GS 22 on the water and the wave looks way better. Any advice is appreciated. thanks!
@ChantelBoats
@ChantelBoats 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald! The wake on the G23 is shorter, but very powerful with a ton of push. The GS22 wake is a little longer, but it doesn't have the same push as the G23. The GS22 really shines if you want a boat that has a great slalom wake and can still surf. I like that surf wake better with more weight in the boat than the sub-floor ballast - you can order the pro-ballast option or get even bigger aftermarket bags, but the surf wake still won't quite be what you get with the G23. If you are thinking G23, get behind it and see how far back you can get on the wake before you lose push - photos and videos can be deceiving! Your dealer should be stoked to take you out!

Unfortunately I learned on a large lake with random 1ft waves at a minimum and wind. Going that slow will put you where you don't want to be. If the wind is in your favor coming in from the side works and is my favorite method. You have to come it hot and reverse quickly. I wish my lake was that calm!

you went in on your starboard side. if that boat reverses to the right how would you go in on port side.

I would try to do starboard side whenever possible, but if you have to go port, you'd bump into gear and out of gear forward with the wheel all the way right to swing the boat in that direction. It's a little trickier, but still do-able.

Chantel, very nice maneuvering and techniques but I have one critique. Your passenger should not be sitting on the back of the boat already waiting to disembark. They should be inside the boat until you are in position for him to leave via the platform. You never know what could happen and your passenger would be in harms way if the wind, wake or some confusion caused you to back the boat into the dock. Your passenger could get caught between the boat and the dock.
