I just have to say - I have gotten a lot of amazing information from this channel that is helping with my boat restoration. Due to the information shared and the way it is easily presented - I have confidently replace the rotten transom, and working or getting it all back together in the coming weeks. It was a daunting task to take on - and I was not confident in my knowledge base until I found this channel. Props to you sir for your hard work and ability to share knowledge in an easy to understand manner.

I've been restoring a heavily oxidized jet boat and saw this video on the Totalboat product. I bought some. The process I found to work took 5 steps. 1. I washed the boat with diluted hydrochloric acid (toliet bowl cleaner), rinsed and dried the boat with a microfiber towel. 2. I used a spray bottle with water and a green Scotchbrite pad to wet sand the boat, dried off with paper towels. 3. I used 3M heavy duty rubbing compound with a 6 inch foam pad buffer, sprayed and dried with paper towels. 4. I used the 6 inch foam buffer with the Totalboat rubbing compund, dried with a microfiber towel....great shine! 5. I applied Marine 31 wax with a 2 inch low speed buffer and foam pad then wiped with a microfiber towel...the boat looks almost new! The fiberglass is shiny including the metalflake sections. It's a dramatic change. Thanks for your testing as the Totalboat compound does a wonderful job to bring out the shine.

I always learn/am reminded of better practices in boat care by watching your videos! It must give a great sense of satisfaction knowing how many boats are going to look that much better because of advice you've shared. And I'm impressed by the fact you're not afraid to share your own learning experiences. Instead of allowing pride to dig your heels in on old ways, you're always experimenting to get the best results. You're quickly becoming the "Project Farm - Marine Edition"... and THAT'S a compliment! :D

Total buff is the bomb! This has been out of stock for a while, but just received a shipment from Jamestown Distributors today. Absolutely phenomenal product. This stuff almost is like a liquid more than a paste. It doesn't seem to build up and glaze on pads, so you could go much longer between cleanings. Compared to other compounds it leaves little to no residue behind, just a mirror finish, free of scratches of course! I went over a large cargo van (fiberglass shell) with 1000 grit wet sand, and absolutely no traces of scratches when followed with Total Buff. It had over 16 years worth of oxidation. Truly a revolutionary product! I have no idea how they do it, but I can't thank Andy enough for sharing. I'm sold on Total Buff. It's works extremely well with a DA polisher. I use the Makita dual action with orange, heavy cut pad, and made 4 passes in a crisscross pattern. 2x2 area works well in high 70 temps. Again, so grateful to Andy for all the info he shares. Andy you are one of a kind Sir! All the best!

My god man I wish I had found your channel sooner! I have sent hundreds of dollars on compounds and sandpaper trying to polish epoxy after sanding out dust nibs and small imperfections. Every auto body pro most epoxy guys kept saying 3M perfect it and a DA polisher would do it. I finally figured out I needed something more. I got an orbital polisher and a more aggressive compound made for gel coats. You would have saved me so much anguish, time and cash.

I'm going to buy some of this total boat product. That was an impressive result. Thanks for sharing your expertise Andy.

It might be the kind of compound that breaks down to smaller particles as it's worked. So it goes from coarse to fine as you use it.

Hi. I like how you do vids. I like your approachable attitude and delivery. I want to say, you have been the ONLY person to make me consider a new compound. I haven't as of yet but the 1st one I try before Level R is Total Boat. I'm a 3M guy (for over a decade) Thanks for this. I hope I can work it into my technique and get the results that I want. Thanks again man. I've passed this info along to everyone I get a chance to talk with about gelcoat. Want to do a video on gelcoat pores??? Drake's detailing and I are at odds. He thinks you can "close the pores" I think pores run deep and getting them to shine is all that's needed because there's just more pores below the surface so no matter how aggressive you get, you deal with the pores in the gelcoat and make them smooth with a "wax" to fill and seal them (for a while) If you ever get to Chelan, WA, come enjoy my hospitality, gladly. Lee

Great video and comparison and yes, new gelcoat is not as hard so polishes out easier and quicker. However, in my experience this year, I have spent over 60 hours polishing my 28 year old gelcoat and tried many different brands and types of polishes/compounds. I did like the Total Boat Rubbing compound, but it does not clean out of the pad as well as one other that is more aggressive and brings up a shine faster which is Majestic Solutions Vibracut 1000. It seems to cut fast and bring out the shine quickly and then flings off the pad and keeps it from building up so quickly. Then I use a pad spur to clean periodically to keep going. If ever interested, and working on aged gelcoat, you might want to give this stuff a try. I do followup afterwards with the Total Boat Totalshine Finishing compound to remove the fine swirl marks and man, what a shine and finish!

i'll be willing to bet that the compound contain pumice as the "grit" Pumice is very porous, and start out "coarse" and grinds itself down to a finer grit. Thus you can pretty much buff anything with it. Long time ago i worked at a company where we had such a compound - we could also finish sanding at about 500 grit, and buff to an insane gloss with the compound.

IMHO, the wool pad helps a lot the compound. You should try with a light foam pad to be sure what the compound is capable of. I hate Maguire's because it's full of oily fillers that mask the defects much than correct them.

Andy, can you comment on how a compound that appears to have very aggressive cutting ability could result in low spots if you are doing gel coat chip repair? Say you fair the repair out on a hull side with 600, and then polish out with this compound, will there be a “low” spot in the general area you were polishing?

I wonder if Total Boat has changed the formulation of this product. I went onto Amazon to order it and found a number of bad reviews. It seems a shame because it appears they had an excellent product.

Good video as always. You might want to put a caveat on this, however, you're using Totalboat's buffing compound on Totalboat's gelcoat. You're using products that are undoubtedly tested on each other internally at Totalboat. This would be more impressive if I saw this tried on different gelcoat brands. Now since you mentioned your previous repair project, and I don't think you're a liar at all, I believe you on the claims, but the demonstration might be questioned.

Andy just looked up the total boat total buff and it says it's for 600 to 800 wet sand buffing, and is part of a 3 stage system they say to follow up with total boat total shine, This is info from Jamestown distributors, but they dont say what the 3rd stage is, I'd be interested as to the end results if the whole system were used, I dont suppose you have the complete system on your shelf to do a follow up demo on a flat sanded area. As this stuff could be a game changer giving all of us more time on the water with less elbows and shoulders aching from vertical buffing 👍👍😉

Hey Andy, tried to order Total Buff using your link above in order to help support your channel. Product shows up as out of stock. However, it is in stock when I go direct to the Jamestown website? Want to make sure I can support your channel.

Andy, will that polishing compound be any good on car paint work?

I have not tried it on a clear coat; but I suspect it would work pretty well. To test I'd definitely do a small spot on a hidden area :-)
