I'd like to think the Kid wouldn't want a pardon from any of the S.O.Bs. running things nowdays.

Give The Kid his pardon & let the man rest!!! I’ve always been a huge fan & researcher of The Kid. I’ve been reading & watching everything on The Kid for the last 20 years myself. I say PARDON THE KID!

Bells book is excellent. I love it. Anyone who is interested in Billy and Lincoln should get a copy of this one. It's easy to read. Easy to understand. And full of great photos and illustration.

Others involved in the Lincoln County war killed and were pardoned, so Billy should have been. Richardson even says Wallace reneged, so let's put it right.

If Billy the Kid was pardoned when he was told he would of been, well he wouldn't had been locked up and killed 2 men while escaping. From what I have read Brady was a shady character and how can you pin point the murder of Brady solely on the Kid? He wasn't the only one who shot that day.

If he would have been pardoned the 2 deputies that I also must say tye deputies had been part of the side against him and other in the Lincoln County War and corrupt governments, the deputies would be alive.

About NYC boy Henry McCarty, aka "Billy the Kid" My step- grandfather Tex Murray arrived in Fort Sumner three days after The Kid was killed. All the drunks in the saloons were talking about Billy the Kid being killed. Tex assumed that the drunks had no idea about what actually happened, so he went around to the Mexican women in town to find the truth. The women told Tex that Pat Garrett got a friend of Billy to call him out of the house, and when Billy exited the house, Garrett shot him. This account differs from other stories, but that's normal in historic events. ( This is still normal today. Look at all the crazy stories that came out of the shooting of Kennedy in 1963, nearly 100 years after the shooting of Billy the Kid.) Tex Murray said that Billy was able to escape so often because of his small hands. Billy was able to "slip" the primitive handcuffs of the day. I heard this story over 70 years ago as a little kid. Tex was quite old at the time, a very decent man but gruff and " though as nails" because of all the hardships of the Old West that he went through. I should have been asking questions about the Old West, but as a timid little city kid, I stayed at arms length from Tex. I saw old Tex slip on a hill and roll thru a bed of "jumping cactus" spines. My dad pulled the spines off of old Tex with a pair of pliers, and Tex never made a sound as this was just business as usual for a man of the Old West. ( See KZfaq for videos of people being attacked by "jumping cactus".) - Tex Murray ran away from home at 13 years old because someone was mean to his dog. He said that was the dumbest mistake of his life. As a 13 y/o runaway he got a job as a "real cowboy" pushing cows from Texas to the railhead in Kansas. Seeing being a cowboy wasn't a way to become rich, he decided to become an ore prospector out west and become wealthy. Tex worked as a hardrock miner in the silver mines in Leadville, Colo. And he made very good money, not from the salary but from "high-grading" the mine (robbing). Tex would put pure silver into his "roll it by hand" cigarette tobacco pouch. He would then throw the tobacco pouch over the protective fence when on break. Tex would crawl back at night and retrieve the pouch with the silver. He invested in silver stock, which was going thru the roof at that time. BUT, the USA went off the silver standard and the sliver stock's value went to zero. Tex lost all his "ill be gotten" money. While working as a miner Tex and a couple of other miners decided to get an education in geology. They would buy drinks in a bar for geologists from big East Coast colleges. The know-it-all geologist would tell the dumber-than-dumb miners all about geology. So, for the price of a few drinks the want-to-be prospectors got an education in geology. Tex heard about the great Alaskan Gold Rush, which was actually in Canada. Tex and a partner hauled a ton of supplies up the "trail of moans", built a boat and floated down the Yukon river. When they got to Dawson City they found that all the gold areas had been claimed, so all that work was for nothing. While he was in Canada the miners heard about another gold strike on the Alaskan west coast. When they got to that gold strike they found that all the gold areas had been claimed. But the miners got a great idea. If there is gold on the west coast of Alaska, there is probably gold a few miles away on the east coast of Russia. So, Tex and the other miners built a boat and traveled over to Russia. As they were unloading their supplies on the beach one of the miners said " Look up on the hill." All the miners looked up the hill and saw about 20 Russian soldiers. The Russians had on their bear skin hats which made them look about 7 foot tall. The miners threw all their stuff back in the boat and got out of Russia "muy pronto". The Russians probably had a big laugh that day. Tex rode in a posse chasing the "Apache Kid" , but didn't see hide-nor-hair of him. Tex also went prospecting down in Mexico as in the movie " The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", but I don't recall any of his adventure in Mexico. Tex an another man decided to prospect in the Grand Canyon. They built a boat and started down the Colorado River. This was before anyone knew about the heavy rapids in the Grand Canyon. After running a few rapids Tex called it quits and decided to hike out. The other man decided to keep going down the river, and was never heard from again. Tex had a very difficult time getting out of the big canyon, and had to leave behind his highly prized Winchester rifle. Two money men staked Tex to prospect in Arizona for ore. The three had an oral contract to split any claims even three ways. Tex found a copper ore site which later became the big San Manuel copper mine. The two money men cut Tex out, saying he was just an employee. As they say.... an oral contract isn't worth the paper it is written on. Back in the Old West an man's word was gold...but not in the new west. I wish that I would have asked Tex a lot of detail questions about his time in the Old West, but that was beyond me as a kid at that time.
