MLB baseball is in desperate shape and badly needs a strong independent Commissioner. Seriously, someone along the lines of Commissioner Landis that won't be a puppet of the owners , has no interest in a team, and is smart enough to know that since the Leagues expanded in 93 and MLB became infatuated with gimmicks like inter-league play and building new ballparks every 10 years attendance at games and interest in the game has wavered. You want to know who would be a good Commissioner? Keith Olbermann. Yes, Keith Olbermann.

Holy smokes, Spiderman, is my oversimplification sense tingling! Sports is built around mastery of a skill; the in-/and out-grouping is incidental: it happens because when we work on a skill, we want to show it and we want to test it against other people. So pursuit of skill -> competition springs up cause conditions are good for it -> in-/out-grouping. It's a second order effect. By contrast, modern politics is literally a game of creating and employing groups of people. It's not even an effect, it's a core mechanic. So what's the purpose of your comparison?

I disagree with that last statement. What is the end of that road, that we stop supporting sports in schools? So people have to go to exclusive sports schools that only the rich have access to? So kids can no longer use sports as a potential way into college? I agree that academics should be at least as important as sports - but I'd never advocate dumping sports from schools and that seems to be where that line of thought is going.

I get your point. But when Universities start throwing millions for sports rather than for research or improving education of the attendees, something is rotten. The entire point of boxing is to give your opponent a concussion before they concuss you. Yet, boxing is the "sweet science." Yes, football is violent. One needs to know the risks, weigh the risks and benefits and make an informed decision. JMHO

You do things differently in America I know, but I don't see how the values of football have _ever_ been "aligned with those of an academic institution". Or any physical sport for that matter. The idea that someone can get a scholarship to an Ivy League university, the height of intellectual rigour and attainment, because they're good at catching a ball, running with it and throwing it is completely baffling to me. I've never understood it.

Bill doesn't get football at all, Bob does. Violence is not the leading factor why the NFL is so popular; it's a factor, for a few, but not most fans. The NFL is more popular because the games all mean something...every one is crucial, there is always urgency. Baseball and basketball play so many games that most of them are essentially meaningless...early in the season there are too many chances to make up for a bad performance and late in the season for most teams there is no way to catch up to the leaders. In football, there is also better parity between teams. Even in an era of a dynasty like the Patriots, on any given Sunday they can be knocked off by any other team, and it doesn't always take decades to see a struggling team turn it around or to see a powerhouse team falter. And Bob also is right about playing once a week...most people don't have time to watch their team 5 days a week, but once a week is an event people can plan around...not to mention most games are on free TV and you don't need an expensive subscription to follow your team. If baseball wants to compete, they should shorten their season, and the NBA needs to shorten their interminable playoffs...all those drawn out series are no fun when compared to March Madness or the NFL playoffs.

A nation's favorite sport does reflect its culture. The country would be a better place if a sport like track or swimming were the most popular. Such sports are competition with, not competition against. You don't have to stop your competitors from doing their best to win. They teach people that they don't have to put others down to bring themselves up.
