He's one of the greatest and most important artists in the history of popular music. A monumental figure, and at 79 years old he's still releasing great records. This past week he released his 37th (by our count anyway) studio album, Rough and Rowdy Ways. It's a phenomenal album, but how does it rank among the rest of his discography.
In this episode of Listography, Jason and Kramzer rank Bob Dylan's studio albums from the worst to the best. From the early folk albums to his electrified folk rock, from Nashville country ramblings to 70's excess, from born again Christian rock to late-period exploration of Americana and roots music. There's a whole lot of ground to cover. Comparing all of these different eras of Dylan was no easy task, but it was a lot of fun!
Albums Discussed:
Bob Dylan
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde on Blonde
John Wesley Harding
Nashville Skyline
Self Portrait
New Morning
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Planet Waves
Blood on the Tracks
Desire
Street Legala
Slow Train Coming
Saved
Shot of Love
Infidels
Empire Burlesque
Knocked Out Loaded
Down in the Groove
Oh Mercy
Under the Red Sky
Good As I Been to You
World Gone Wrong
Time Out of Mind
Love and Theft
Modern Times
Together Through Life
Christmas in the Heart
Tempest
Shadows in the Night
Fallen Angels
Triplicate

I just had to tell someone this: if you love “Shelter From the Storm” check out a radically different version with the Dead from Oakland in July 1987. Sparkling. Wish it would have made the album I think just a bit too ragged. Brent Mydland beautiful piano on that.

Blood on the Tracks for me. I was in a really bad place when I first heard it, feeling really alone and empty. Hearing it was like I had encountered a warm fire. or had a good talk with a loved one. I felt the warmness of humanity once again. Music can be so wonderful.

The Dylan album that really grabbed me is not necessarily an album. It is the Vol. 1 of the Bootleg Series. I listened to that stoned for the first time and suddenly became aware of how powerful Bob Dylan was. How in the world could somebody be that good.

You know you are right. They totally missed it. I heard it in 1969 as a bootleg, ("Great White Wonder) and was stunned. It was like the heart of Americana flowed right through him. The humor is wonderful and these fragments ("Please Mrs. Henry", "Tiny Montgomery", "Million Dollar Bash", "Quinn the Eskimo" as well as more complete songs ("Wheels on Fire", "I shall be Released", "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere") are pure gold. Greatest record never released. Much better than JWH or Nashville Skyline. Top 10 for sure. Maybe top 5. Only Dylan could do that.

i dont know how one could rank dylan albums. it would seem to me that you would have to rank albums within a particular genre. so i could see ranking the first 10-12 albums, when dylan was dylan. his six albums from freewheeling thru blonde on blonde is by far his most productive era. the era in which he will be remembered. or put another way, if he didnt have these 6 albums, he would not be the superstar that he is

Such a great video, I've just subbed. There were some choices there i wouldn't have expected but throughout you guys showed great knowledge and passion. It's pretty amazing to think how Dylan has been recording for 6 decades and a lot of us watching this video will feel something or have an opinion for every album he's put out (not even going into the Bootleg Series, which has been brilliant). I don't have a list but top ones would definitely be (in some order) Bringing it all Back Home, Highway 61, Blonde on Blonde. Great to see Street Legal, Oh Mercy and Time out of Mind getting some love, they are all classics too, and John Wesley Harding always holds a special place for me

Enjoyed your rundown and sure I could quibble over some picks but hey it’s all good. One factual issue, you might want to check when Dylan began recording in Nashville. Only other point I’d raise is for those of us who lived through Dylan’s entire career there’s a huge separation between the albums that defined a generation and those that turned personal. It’s tough rating them in the same list because they served such vastly different purposes and had vastly different impacts. Thanks for putting this together it’s a great overview and conjures all kinds of emotions and memories.

Great reviews guys, it's fascinating to hear rankings of Dylan's albums and as you say there are so many nuggets and gems, even the weakest album of his has plenty to enjoy. The difficulty in generating a list like this is how to compare a consistently good album against a weaker album which has some great songs on. You have to follow your heart on a subjective mission like that. Your review has me itching to re-visit some of his albums which I haven't given much air time to. I've never enjoyed Oh Mercy! for example, having found the sound and production too glossy for Dylan. And despite being a massive fan I have never made it through all 30 of the songs on Triplicate, he was trying our patience and thank heavens he rewarded us with R&RW. As I watch more and more people on KZfaq reviewing Dylan I am comforted by the fact that many people are singing the praises of his 70s work, I'm not sure many people agree with me, but Street Legal is my all time favourite, a stellar opening track, wonderfully consistent throughout and a great closing song too. Having heard your comments there are a few albums I think, whoa, what am I missing? I never had much time for Nashville Skyline (maybe because I'm British and we're not really so much into country) and Infidels and Planet Waves (as you comment on the latter) both sound like Bob guesting on someone else's album and so don't rate highly for me. As for putting Down in the Groove last Jason, his version of Shenandoah gives me a lot of pleasure! Thanks for your efforts.

I like Nashville Skyline, but it isn't one my favorites and I prefer the original Girl from the North Country, but consider that Johnny Cash is singing on it, that Bob Dylan's voice here is a bit more listener friendly to many though I prefer his classic mid 60s voice, and it has an early fairly mainstream romantic revery with a lovely melody in Lay Lady Lay and maybe some people would like a respite from heaviness and depth at times with a pleasing country twang to assuage their angst. Besides, I have seen a number of others on the internet pick this one as well. To me, it adds an intriguing if relatively minor key to the complexity of his artistry.

Blonde on Blonde was the bomb. Fantastic and desperate poetry. "Inside the heat pipes just cough. The country music station plays soft, but there's nothing really nothing to turn off. (note the blurring and indefinite meaning) Just Louise and her lover so intwinned. And these Visions of Johanna that conquer my mind." Interesting to hear the alternate take on this too. Freewheelin' Bob Dylan must be mentioned. Especially when you listen to all the recorded tracks not used on the album for one reason or another.

Gordo is gone, but they will always be one of my all time favorite bands.I will never forget the first time I heard them on the radio when I was living in Virginia. They played Blow at high dough. Really enjoyed this. I've seen Dylan 175+ times. First time at the Last Waltz plus all of the Warfield Jesus shows in 1979. I'm always blown away when younger people can get into post-2000 Dylan. One note, the writing on Desire sounds a little different because (except for Sara) the songs are co-written with Jaques Levy the playwright (Oh Calcutta). This was a fun watch. Thanks!

Very surprised how the younger folk regard "Nashville Skyline." Both put it in the top 5... I'll have to listen to it with fresh ears. probably because it sounded so 'western' to me, so country, that it didn't hit me forcefully at the time. Of course, that album, along with the preceding one "John Wesley Harding" (which was recorded bare bones without overdubs at the height of Psychedelia & quite an ear-opening experience - - even Hendrix thought so, going on to covering one of the songs "Watchtower" - - also, please re-listen to "Frankie Lee & Judas Priest" - - that has always been the standout track for me on that album) was pointing the way forward & gave the industry an entire slew of solo singer/songwriter albums with that country-rock blend & bands like America & the Eagles, etc. etc... Dylan has always been prescient it seems, getting there before anyone else. You may not know this, because both of you state you like the album for its Nashville musicians playing on it - - Dylan's first recording with Nashville musicians was on "Blonde On Blonde" (with Robbie Robertson from The Band as the go-between). The musicians working in the studio didn't know Dylan from Adam & the first thing he had them do was wait until after midnight while he finished writing a song, "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" & then this was the first song they recorded, they thought he was bonkers because the song just goes on & on when they thought it would end after 4 minutes, then 6 minutes, then 8 minutes, that's why they seem to crescendo more & more on the chorus as time goes on, they kept thinking, okay, here's the big finish... but it wasn't. He still had more verses to sing.

I naturally started mostly grouping favourites into eras. Also for me, Dylan is all about the songwriting, so it only made sense that the covers albums would make their way to the bottom of the list, regardless of how much I might enjoy them. 1. Highway 61 Revisited 2. Blood on the Tracks 3. Blonde on Blonde 4. Bringing It All Back Home 5. The Freewheeling' Bob Dylan 6. The Times They Are A-Changin' 7. Another Side of Bob Dylan 8. As much as I love Bob Dylan, I've tended to stick to the "cream of the crop", for the most part, in his staggering discography over the years, and so have overlooked some of his less celebrated albums, especially the covers records. I probably should finally get around to those neglected works (New Morning and Planet Waves, for instance). For now, however, here's my Top 10 favorite Dylan albums: 1. Highway 61 Revisited 2. Blonde on Blonde 3. Blood on the Tracks 4. Bringing it all Back Home 5. John Wesley Harding (shocked to see this classic so low on Jason's list) 6. Love & Theft 7. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan 8. Oh Mercy 9. Time Out of MInd 10. Desire Other solid Dylan albums that I'm relatively familiar with, which is to say, I haven't played to death, for better or worse: The Times They are A-Changin', Nashville Skyline, Slow Train Coming, Infidels, Modern Times, Rough and Rowdy Ways (I agree with you both, this one may climb into my Top 10 down the road as I get to know it better).

So much of Dylan's sound comes from the side players and bands he used. They pretty much created the Dylan sound together. For instance Sly and Robbie are all over Infidels along with Knopfler and Mick Taylor and give that record its sound. This may sound weird but I've always been more interested in the people who play around him and how they fleshed the songs out than Dylan alone. Much of the genius in the Dylan records I most enjoy is in his choice of the players for the material. Good point about Springsteen Street Legal connection, also with Shot of Love, Chuck Plotkin produced, and Desire to lesser degree. I think that may be why he has stuck with his band now for so long. He finally found the groove he was looking for whereas before there was always a lot of going for a new sound on each album which was kind of cool also.

Good to see high ratings for Planet Waves and Modern Times. Interesting to see Jason putting Street Legal so high -- this album was widely overlooked for a long time. The most interesting thing is how much you both like Nashville Skyline, which was considered a massive disappointment by most fans on release in 1969. An example of an album becoming more appreciated outside the context of its time. Hard to disagree that Rainy Day Women is arguably the flaw in Blonde On Blonde. Ironically, it was the final song recorded at the sessions. My question: if you were going to resequenced Blonde On Blonde, what should the opener be?

I never thought anyone would of had Nashville Skyline so high and above Freewheeling that has some of the greatest songs ever made. But cool analysis and really know your stuff and cool people my age actually like and know about Dylan properly! With me my list changes all the time and sometimes I go ages without listening to him at all but then become obsessed again. If I had to choose the best songwriter of the 20th 21st century it would have to be Dylan even though he hasn’t always performed them or produced them the best at times ,he still has the greatest catalogue of songs and if he had the looks and voice of Elvis and kept his attitude innovation rebellion and songwriting he would be almost to good for this world and been number one non stop!

If you enjoy the 3 religious albums you must listen to the Bootleg Series Trouble No More. Live versions of these songs and others. His singing in that period may be the best of his career. His back up bands were excellent. The 81 tour with Al Kooper was top notch. High energy versions of Shot of Love Songs. The band he had around the period of Saved kicks ass. Jim Keltner on drums and Tim Drummond on bass put out an incredible groove and Bob's vocals are powerful. I found the performance on Saved flat but these songs live rock.

I really enjoy Kramzer's vibe, even though I think I agree with his taste the least often! Been cruising through y'alls rad content starting with the Beach Boys stuff!
