Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (Live in Chicago 1974)

Here's one of the best renditions of "Ballad of a Thin Man" from the legendary 1974 tour. This was recorded at the Chicago Stadium on 4 January 1974, the second night of the tour. Dylan hadn't been on the road since 1966, but he came back full swing. Nearly every night of the tour was sold out before it began; Promoter Bill Graham estimated the gross revenue to be almost $100 million. This venue had a capacity of nearly 20,000. Although it was a commercially successful run, Dylan became weary of these massive crowds. This is one of the reasons why the subsequent "Rolling Thunder Revue" tour played mostly in smaller theaters and gymnasiums. Though Dylan may have preferred smaller crowds than this one, you'd never know; Live Dylan doesn't get much better than this!
On a separate note, I'd like to once more ask for your support. This is a free service, and I am a college student trying to make a living as a singer-songwriter, which has been difficult during the pandemic. If you enjoy Dylan, you might like what I have to offer. If you have the means, please purchase my new album "2nd Impressions":

I’m 50 and grew up listening to my father’s Dylan records but he was strictly folk Dylan (not that there’s anything wrong with that). However, in after reading a couple books from the library like you in 2009, I decided to purchase EVERYTHING including vinyl and it’s been the most rewarding journey. Of course the bootlegs are where it’s at!!

Sandra, I am 76 also and been very interested in Bob Dylan since saw the Don't Look Back documentary was on PBS maybe 15 years ago or more. I am a writer and biographies have always been a main interest of mine. I wasn't a Bob Dylan music fan when I was young adult and had gotten his greatest hits album after watching his 30th Anniversary show at Madison Square Garden which I purchased the DVD of. Only in the past year or so discovered on KZfaq, so I have been finding this huge number of songs on KZfaq that I had never heard of. I listened to my old tapes from the local lite rock radio stations in SF Bay Area, and didn't even realize that "Knockin on Heaven's Door" I had recorded. I've always been a big Neil Young fan, Van Morrison, The Byrds and CS&N fan and didn't even realize that they toured with Bob.

I `m from Eastern African Cushites and this man is the one I listen from America. I don't know but I feel that's he is not with every generation as he should be because everything he plays is the best or he isn't? Who can be better than him in the United States? In my taste of music and art, I think its the best when, everything is done a single person whether its the words, the beat and decision of what instrument. This man does everything.

I was at the second show of the tour in Chicago. There was a lottery for tickets. You had to mail in a check. Something like 11% of the country participated. My first Bob concert. The anticipation was never duplicated- he’d been off the road since ‘66. I think the tour got too amped up as it went along. This performance was more controlled. Love it!

Sorry. Great as this is it doesn't come close to 66, especially in England. Then again, nothing else has either. Death threats were common on that tour. That and the speed and whatever else they were taking made them play every show and every song as if it could be their last. You can't sustain that. The miracle is they got there at all, however briefly. And that motorcycle "accident" with the "broken neck"? People in Woodstock who knew Bob then considered it highly exaggerated, more an excuse to get off the road. They didn't talk about it at the time, believing the move probably saved his life. And they were probably right.
