I was surprised to find that this gem wasn't already on KZfaq. Here it is. Below is an amazing backstory told by Jaharana Romney (wife of Hugh Romney/Wavy Gravy), formerly Bonnie Beecher, the subject of this song. The last picture is of her and Wavy.
"He came to my apartment and said, 'It's an emergency! I need your help! I gotta go home an' see my mother!' He was talking in the strangest Woody Guthrie-Oklahoma accent. I don't know if she was sick, but it was an unexpected trip he had to make up to Hibbing and he wanted me to cut his hair.' He kept saying, 'Shorter! Shorter! Get rid of the sideburns!' So I did my very best to do what he wanted and then in the door come Dave Morton, Johnny Koerner, and Harvey Abrams. They looked at him and said, 'Oh my God, you look terrible! What did you do?' And Dylan immediately said, 'She did it! I told her just to trim it up a little bit but she cut it all off. I wasn't looking in a mirror!' And then he went and wrote that song, 'Bonnie, why'd you cut my hair? Now I can't go nowhere!' He played it that night in a coffeehouse and somebody told me recently that they had been to Minnesota and somebody was still playing that song, 'Bonnie, Why'd You Cut My Hair?' It's like a Minnesota classic! And so I've gone down in history!"
~Jaharana Romney (Bonnie Beecher)
This is one of the earliest recorded Dylan originals, only preceded by a few tracks recorded from 1958-1960.
I will be uploading the full Minnesota Party Tape (sometimes called the Minneapolis Party Tape) within the next few days. Stay tuned.
Credits to Olof Björner for information and backstory.
Peace & Love,
~SP

Minnesota represent! My apartment window in Dinkytown overlooked Dylan's apartment window in the alley off 4th St. Of course I was there many decades later.

I've heard of this song, but never heard it. It's one of those infamous songs taped before he was famous. So good to hear Bob having a good time. I believe it was Bonnie Beecher who cut his hair. Back then Bob had little idea he would become one of the greatest Songwriters ever, along with Lennon and McCartney, those three Songwriters were the most important in modern music, the influence they had is still being felt, all these years later. As a lyricist, it goes without saying, Bob is the greatest ever. Nobody can touch Bob when it came to lyrics, he was an awesome painter of pictures with his words. He could tell a story, and the words that he wrote would be so brilliant, the imagery would take you to places in your head, or he could just totally blow you away, with songs like 'Its Alright Ma(I'm only bleeding), that song still blows me away, the words just dazzle you, until you don't know where you are, trying to keep up with the images, then you come back and he's still going with these amazing lyrics, and he takes you off again. Totally awesome. I remember the first time I bought the Bringing it all back home album when I was 15 years old, and when 'Its Alright Ma' came on, I was a different person when it ended, I just kept playing it endlessly. Now 36 years later it still sends shivers down my spine. Bringing it all back home is my favourite Dylan album. It's got everything on it. I was so glad when Bob got the Nobel prize for literature. It was so deserved. Well done Bob. I'm still listening to Rough and Rowdy ways.✌️

One of my favorite pre-debut songs of Bob's. I was tickled when I found out the girl who sung that beautiful song on the last recorded episode of the twilight zone was with bob in his early days. Thank you for exposing these recordings to more people, swingin'.

She was an incredible actress and could have had a long career. I'd love to hear her explanation for why she stopped acting. I'm guessing she chose marriage and a more private life. But she was absolutely incredible in that Twilight Zone episode and was in a ton of shows in quick succession and then just disappeared. You could even tell the Twilight Zone crew knew they'd found someone special. In the credits, it says, "Introducing Bonnie Beecher." Generally they use that respectful phrase when they believe they're introducing someone that's going to have a legendary career. I believe she could have.

I was wondering, I know its a longshot, but do you perhaps have the cleaned up version of the minnesota party tape (1960)? Some songs (K.C. moan, jesus christ, johnny I hardly knew ye) are heard in their cleaned-up state in no direction home and I know a full great quality Johnny I hardly knew ye exists. Thank you for your past and future efforts :)

There’s actually three “Minnesota Tapes”, the “party” one, the “university” one, and the “hotel” one, sometimes also referred to as the “party” one. It gets confusing haha. The one you’re referring to is the “Minnesota University Tape”, recorded in 1960. It’s a pretty short one, about 20 mins. I can upload this one too at some point if I dig it out :) we’ll see how good the quality is.
