This was recorded at Les Arenes in Frejus, France on 13 June 1989. We're lucky to have such complete, clear, and close footage of this concert. A big thanks goes to Zimmy21, the original videographer of this concert, who generously gave me the raw footage to restore.
Although it's a little grainy, I managed to sharpen the image a bit, and then I mastered it in 4K definition. I also found a very clear stereo recording of the concert and dubbed it over the footage. Synching these two sources took some effort since analog tapes usually didn't record at a constant speed, but it turned out quite well in the end.
The video recording is nearly complete, but "Hey La La (Hey La La)", "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)", and "I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)" were not included. Our friend Mr. Tambourine provides us with an audio recording of the first of the lot, though: • Video .
TRACKLIST:
0:00 - You're A Big Girl Now
5:13 - All Along The Watchtower
8:53 - Just Like A Woman
16:05 - Lakes Of Pontchartrain
21:36 - Gates Of Eden
27:24 - Knockin' On Heaven's Door

36:52 - Like A Rolling Stone [feat. RINGO STARR on drums]
43:43 - Boots Of Spanish Leather
49:24 - Peace In The Valley [Beautiful rendition and the only time Dylan ever played it]

58:15 - Maggie's farm
PERSONEL:

I read somewhere that George Harrison said,"If all the Traveling Wilbury's done was to get Bob Dylan back on the road, and finding his muse again, then it was worth every minute" And it worked, after releasing two of the worst albums of his illustrious career, Knocked out Loaded and Down in the Groove, after messing around with George Harrison,Tom Petty,Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne for the Traveling Wilbury's album, Dylan said it reminded him of making the Basement Tapes,he really enjoyed it, and then went on to make his best album of the '80s, the brilliant "Oh Mercy", and went on the Never ending tour. Good friends George Harrison and Bob Dylan for many a year, until George's sad passing. What a genius this man Dylan is, he's been creating magic since 1963 and The Freewheelin, amazing. ✌️

@@AndrewHindley Thanks Andrew, i bet them shows in '89 were brilliant. My older brother was lucky enough to see him in 1984 when he was touring the UK and he said it was magic. I love Oh Mercy, although it's not my favourite Dylan album, but he has made so many classic albums and Oh Mercy is definitely 1 of his classics. Take Care man.

I am from Canada. In 89 I did a bike trip in Europe. One of my highlights was meeting a pretty German girl at the youth hostel and we went to this concert, sat up on the hill outside the arena and listen in on the concert. Can’t believe someone posted this! Awesome. I still have the poster I took from a telephone pole.

Dylan's the only person who could get away with being joined by Ringo Starr and not even bother to introduce or thank him, and for some reason it doesn't even come off rude. He's just being 'Dylan' and I wouldn't even expect him to. LOL

My first concert was Bob dylan in 1989 in Paris. Probably a few days before or after this show. Of course one of my best memory. 3 things I remember: When queuing next to me were a group of people carrying a gigantic tape recorder they brought with them. I got the bootleg a few years later. Bob Dylan was so skinny that you could literally see his bones through his pant. Finally, from my place in the concert hall, I could not hear anything his guitarist was playing. You could see him playing solos and hearing nothing. I finally could here him on the bootleg. Thank you for the upload!

Hey Swingin I really enjoyed this so much! What a special piece of Bob music history you have here! I know I will be revisiting for sure! I love it! I just listened again and it’s even better! I totally love the lighting too it has a more theatrical style like those old theatres with spotlights. Not always easy to create nowadays I don’t think! Bob is in Stellar form and G.E. Guitar 🎸 and Bob’s guitar 🎸 too and live Ringo’s drumming! The whole thing is gorgeous! I really enjoyed the chat ... it takes awhile to get to know new people but not just people of your own community but people across the globe and different generations, and cultural backgrounds. To me the only way to do it is to just do it! You know work through the differences and the awkward stages, some misunderstandings here and there. If the clime gets set to be kind and not disrespectful like I require with my Facebook Bob Dylan groups, then things start to line up and even warm up! We all love Bob Dylan so we should act like Bob is in the house, because he actually is with his music and sometimes live footage too! That’s my take on chats anyway for what it’s worth! I am still learning all the time. Thanks again, and keep them coming! 🙏🏻✨🤍✨😎🎄☃️

Bob has the best of friends who are gracious enough to play on stage. In this instance, Ringo gives the exact perfect precision beat for "All Along The Watchtower". Jimmy and Bob shared the same understanding of sound check and had it formulated to a science. So few musicians have this gift of interpretation of the real sound bounce reverberation. Bobby has the patience and determination to get the vibes moving the tempo and pace to a likeable variation. Jimmy could get sounds to be surreal creations with infinite possibilities.Therein lies the "true genius" of poets fine tuning song. Like Bob said, that singing a poem is a fine art, differing from the print on paper. The Creole girl serenade has stunning dramatic pauses and emphatic positive ebb and flows. "The Gates of Eden" is so spiritual and soul stirring that it should have been used in a remake of "East of Eden". In an alter ego universe I imagine Bob and Jimmy Dean riding" highway 61" and just chillingly to do art works of another dimension. The outcome would have been nothing less than spectacular. "Knocking on Heaven's Door" is a shade shy of the light prisms reflected in the nacre of black aubergine pearls. We feel transported to the days of Johnny Winter with that unique type of playing chords and bridges. It feels like the sound barrier being broken on the Concorde. This concert meant a milestone in his career and the fans show enormous appreciation.

Dear old Ringo! The luckiest man in showbiz, he got the Beatles gig because he was from Liverpool, could (just about) keep a back beat going and wasn't needed to drum on the complicated bits in the studio. As is demonstrated all too clearly here, Ringo's artless artistry didn't develop much down the years. When I saw Ringo play live with his All Starr Band, 20+ years ago, he had another drummer on stage to do the work, and his drums weren't even miked!
