“Watching the world change in 6 minutes.” This is the first time Bob Dylan played live with an electric guitar. He would ALWAYS play an acoustic, until this festival. People booed at him and didn’t like it. As he said himself “I electrified half of the audience and electrocuted the other half.” Awesome reaction.

Released in the summer 1965. There was no significant FM radio, no I tunes, no MTV, no social media to spread the message. Somehow this song struck a chord and almost over night was playing on every AM radio station across a changing nation. It quickly became an anthem for a generation..........

Turning to his band, Dylan instructs, “Play it fucking loud!” The greatest response to an audience catcall ever made by an artist (after being called “Judas” by a fan in England on his 1966 Tour with the Hawks). In fact, you should check out that version, Ewan, as Dylan sneers out the lyrics, “How does it feeeeeeeeel?” Hell, yeah!

It’s great that you discovered Dylan, it it’s a hobby that will keep you busy because there’s so much to discover. His first album came out in 1962, but he was playing cover tunes mostly. His second album “The Freewheeling Bob Dylan” came out in 1963 and that’s really where it all began with him writing profound songs. He’s put out an album or two almost every year since then, and all of them are great. He never followed trends in music or fashion, he was always himself and never comprised. Although it might be too long for you to react to, you might want to listen to his 17 minute song about the murder of president Kennedy called “Murder Most Foul”, that will have a huge impact on you. It also will make you want to watch the movie “JFK” by Oliver Stone if you’ve never seen it.

Even if this song throws some of the darkest shade ever written (probably about Warhol star Edie Sedgwick), I feel that the song softens at the end. He sings the last lines before the final chorus: "When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose/You're invisible now, you've got no secrets to conceal." Once she's hit bottom, she no longer needs to hide and pretend.

I'm glad that you're going to hear the studio version, because I think it's better, but it's such a good song that this somewhat lesser version still sounded good. This is my favorite Dylan song. My 2nd favorite is "Visions of Johanna". "Blowin' in the Wind" is a good choice for next Dylan song because it's a great song and will show you a different side of Dylan. It's folk, while "Like a Rolling Stone" is rock.

Early folk era stuff you should listen to would be Masters of War, Hard Rains Gonna Fall, Talking Workd War III, his eighties masterpiece would be Jokerman, one of his later records A Murder Most Foul, about JFK’s end. Nobody can match his writing. Thunder On the Mountain is a good one if he’s more recent.

@Ewan Reviews ...Subscribed. But I did so BEFORE you asked listeners to consider subscribing! Very impressed with your approach and reaction. So much to appreciate about Bob Dylan. He's a brilliant writer and poet, and is superb at integrating the instrumentation and the atmosphere of his music with his lyrics. Do listen to his best-known of his many, many critically acclaimed pieces, but also to lesser known works to see his many sides (one case in point, the song "If Dogs Run Free," which has jazz piano, a sprinkling of quirky scatting, and Dylan lyrically musing in beat). (Ithink it's from his "New Morning" album.)

#1 By Rolling Stone magazine of the top 500 songs of all time. Studio version is amazing. If you do some background checking on Bob Dylan you’ll realize the original composition of the song was much much longer. He still cut the song significantly to get it on radio. I would recommend watching his documentary. No direction home. Trying to figure out the meaning of any Bob Dylan song could take you a lifetime. Bob himself has said many times he didn’t even know the meaning of the songs or where they came from.

1965. That’s the year I had a job as an elevator operator at the Detroit Sheraton Cadillac Hotel. Dylan came to town for a concert. Not being a fan, I was already aggravated by my supervisor telling me to pick up “the special” on 25 and give him an express to the ground floor. I knew it was HIM. A snob, with his nose on the ground as I expected. When I got to the ground floor I deliberately stopped my elevator serval inches from the ground and snickered as he tripped off in his elevator shoes.

I had a longtime friend (passed away recently) who was at that Newport concert. He said that about half the audience were upset at Dylan doing electric music...or they were simply upset that the sound of the band was "too loud" and "distorted", so they were having trouble hearing the lyrics.............and the other half of the audience, including him, absolutely loved it. The press the next day only talked about those who didn't like it....because newspapers love controversy. This was the song that really got me interested in Bob Dylan, and actually changed *everything*.

I understand what you meant. Bob enunciates clearly. Lyrics meant the world to him. These lyrics are brutal. This song is about Edie Sedgewick, a rich girl who got involved with Andy Warhol and his crowd, did a lot of drugs, died young. It's a sad story. So is the song. The song continually asks, "How does it feel to; be a nobody" He pokes fun at the wealthy. Rolling Stone magazine once named this the greatest rock song of all time. I certainly won't disagree. This song was when Bob first went electric. Up till now, he was acoustic. People went apeshit. Who cares? He was a genius. Dylan has, of course, won the Nobel Peace Prize for his poetry. Some of us have followed him for decades. I'm one of them. I'm 69 and discovered him my freshman year in high school. I saw him recently. I agree with Ella Bell about It's Abright Ma, But I also strongly recommend Mr. Tangerine Man, both for its music and for its lyrics. Link: watch?v=oecX_1pqxk0

This one here, such a bad video selection, music wise, to listen to live. Hardly any of the instruments are tuned, so bad that even Dylan gets tripped up in some of the verses!
