I watched and listened to the Hard Rain performance this morning and was completely shattered. Despite hearing this song hundreds and hundreds of times I was never moved like I was this time. I just listened again and again, My heart is just broken. 2020 has been tragic, enraging, so many horrors- listening to that decades old prophetic song and that voice crying in the wilderness I’m so grateful to be hear in the timeofDylan.

Dylan said as he came off stage from his Nara performance in "94 that he had not sung so well in 15 years. He was being modest, I think. The version of 'A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall' he delivers here is one of the single greatest in his long career as a performance artist.

When I first saw this about 6 years ago. I was reduced to tears. Hard Rain... was the bravest thing I'd SEEN (or have seen) by any performer...ever, and I'm including any Al Jolson, Judy Garland dramatics; any tragic Billie Holiday; burning Muddy Waters, Pavarotti, Buddy Holly... back beyond any of the greats from Bessie to Bruce, from Elvis to The Beatles on a rooftop. Dylan was so far out, here, that he could only crash and burn if he did not, (and he did) completely own the orchestration and the splendid occasion. Now as I listen and watch, I've not changed my mind. This is still an epic and sublime rendition of an epic and apocalyptic song, which I believe is one of the greatest performances ever. The harmonic modulations from the 2n verse onwards, leave the master on a high wire of melodic magic, on which he defies the death of a wrong note or a missed chord - and this despite 'fluffing' the very first lines of the song. The arrangement grows and expands to fill everyman's expectations, and surely only chaos can come from the slo-mo explosion of orchestration going on around the rock-like centre...except that Dylan gathers the wild waving threads of the climax into a bundle of expectation and hope, in a dark and broodingly subdued finale. Not technically perfect, but who gives a s**t about that? Right from the gods this one. And repeat!
