I worked on this video. It was shot in Memphis in the New Daisy theater on Beale Street. Dylan had rented the theater for a week to rehearse while working up a set to take on a small club tour.

I listened to this song all the time when my father was dying and now it always reminds me of him and his last days on this planet. It always makes me cry. I had witten him that letter ... we had lived in London and we had been to Paris ...and ended up living in Spain in front of the sea ... we were both very dissapointed with humans whom we had both devoted our lives to, to no avail. His nerves were naked and numb in the end due to the sedation ... and I wasn't there at his side for a couple of days because a very very close cousine commited suicide the day he was sedated. I had to go to the morgue to identify her and stayed with her til she was cremated. My father seemed to be waiting for me to say goodbye...because he didn't leave until I was back at his side and told him I loved him and that now he could go to the light ...then, he died. It seemed the song had been written for us, for that moment in our life.

Apart from the brilliance of the Dylan's lyrics and delivery, the producer - Daniel Lanois - gets a lot of credit from me. I know a lot of Dylan fans disagree, but I think Lanois' striving for texture rather that just sounds from the array of backing musicians, works beautifully for the song. In the wrong hands the track could have ended up pretty depressing but the production transforms it into more like a spiritual.For me, this is up there with Dylan's best work.
@luqmanleckie51944 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right, what an insightful analysis. When I try to tell friends why I think think this is THE best late Dylan song, its always: the lyrics, his voice, the melody, and THE ARRANGEMENT. For me in particular, those 4 repeating high notes on the lead guitar, gives it a sublime, yes, a spiritual quality.

I lived in Toronto 2013-2017. Figured out after a while that the same guy I'd see in the line at my coffee shop was Lanois. Great neighbour, took time to chat with everyone. He played a fundraiser for dogs in the neighbourhood and I got to see him work that pedal steel in person. It's something to see. The whole album Time Out Of Mind album is absolutely amazing i became depressed around 17 years old I credit this song and the album for keeping me that way for 10 more years. I stewed in my own misery while listened to it. I remember a line from one of his songs like “I can write a song that can make a grown man lose his mind” that he sure can. Dylan’s music is so powerful it dances on the line between this world and the one you want to be in. The ambience in this song and album just gives me goosebumps every time. A word of advice, don’t listen to this album too much you will seriously loose your mind, you start to question everything about yourself and life in general, how someone can write the music that captures depression so succinctly is a testament to Bobs ability as by far the greatest songwriter in history. He was clearly battling his own demons to capture the detail for this album.

I love the way Dylan sings as though he's on death's door. His breathing is almost like a death rattle and he sounds like he's straining and in pain, even though he's actually trying to sing. This song makes me think of my own death and how I wish I could sing like Dylan about the pain of existence. Unfortunately, I was classically trained and so I'm unable to make such raspy, hoarse sounds with my voice. He's a genius. Brilliant.

No cover ...and there are many.....comes even close to conveying Bob's ironic delivery or arrangement, no matter how hard they try,. Once again Genius at work and play.

I have a brother.. He molested me when I was younger... I have a father who left without a trace when I was 3 years old... All I know at the age of 41 is that my brother loved this song, my father loved this song and so do I... Even though shit happened and we all went our separate ways... I still want this song to be the thing that made us a family... A indefinable piece of history... No matter what... I don't condone any of it... But it binds us...

I have no doubt devoted a great deal of my life to studying the art of the meister himself, our great barde, Bob Dylan. Some say it was not a good thing. I am now the same age as Dylan when he recorded this song. Though i have related to much of his art, I can't pretend I understand what he was saying. This haunting song reminds me of my age, but I feel 17 in the spirit. Thanks Bob.
