That's my Uncle Garth! I love him and Aunt Maud so much! I remember when I lived with them for a while a couple times Garth playing the piano hours upon hours and telling fantastic stories.

Watching this after Robbie's passing, this video is even more emotional, as Garth is the last one left. Bless Garth Hudson

Garth picked me up hitchhiking on Route 28 in about 1969. Mercedes. I also saw him buying a fan at the old Caldors where I was working. This was after Big Pink, before the Brown Album. Thank you for everything Garth, you made the world a better place.

Garth is one of the great musicians of our time. It was great to see this video and some of The Band's history. It's hard to believe Garth is the only living member of The Band.

Sure, Garth is an old man now but HOLY CRAP when he plays the piano, the magic is still definitely there. Unbelievable.

The heart and soul of The Band. It took 12 musicians to duplicate what this one man did on Ophelia. “Garth Hudson - organ, synthesizers, trumpet, horn, oboe, clarinet, flute.”

One of the greatest pleasures of my life was seeing The Band perform at the HOB/West Hollywood in the mid 90s. I was blown away, and subsequently walked out, on to Sunset Blvd, and on to their bus, where I met Rick, Levon, and Garth. They, and their driver, were as kind as could be. I still have my autographed ticket stub from that show with Garth's signature right on the front. To this very day I refer to that show as the best that I have ever witnessed, out of the hundreds of shows that I have attended in my time.

Much wisdom and experience in those old hands. The Band awoke something in me over 50 years ago that I will take with me to my end. Nothing like these guys, before or since, and I'm so fortunate to have been around when it all happened. Those truly were the good old days!

I love this video. In 1985 or 1986, I flew from Dallas to Los Angeles. The seat next to me was vacant. At the last moment before the doors were closed, a very tall gentlemen with 2 instrument cases (Clarinet and Oboe?) came down the aisle. He apologize profusely for making everyone get up, my seat was in the centre of the cabin. The gentleman and I started to chat. When you are sitting next to someone, you don’t easily recognize them. We started to talk about music. I suddenly realized who this was. It was Garth and we talked about music, CDs (new then), working with Bob and also music therapy for people in comas. Garth gave me his telephone number and said I should give him a call and stop by sometime. For some reason, I never did and I still regret that. Garth is a very gracious and humble man!❤

The man's piano playing at the end carries within it all that old Americana sound that was present in The Band's best recordings.

I've known Garth and the others in the Band on a personal level for most of my life. All great guys, and yes...Garth is amazing like others have posted. Garth spent a lot of time at our business in Woodstock, writing, editing and copying sheet music. That and napping lol. Garth has narcolepsy so he'd doze off from time to time. He's not like most other musicians and celebrities that visit or live here....he actually is nice and loves to talk to people. Very much a people person. HIs knowledge of music and his capabilities are amazing, and greatly underappreciated and unrecognized. Sister Maude is also awesome!! Seen Dylan a couple times but never got to talk to him. If i would have asked Garth or the other guys they would have made it happen, but we just don't do that lol. It's one of the big reasons they like Woodstock, nobody is star struck and they can be left alone.

On the legendary musician scale, Garth Hudson is on the top. He's an old man now but you sit him in front of a piano and the magic comes out as if if he was back in 1968. Unbelievable !

Thank you Garth for getting those magical sounds on tape for all of eternity. I made the pilgrimage to Big Pink about 20 years ago and it is indeed sacred ground.

Yes sirree! Garth still flows with the magic he's never lost on the keyboard. To see him wearing a LOS LOBOS[Whose latest "back to their roots" release is maybe the best Los Lobos record ever!] shows he may be older, but still is on top of the latest in musicland and is classy as all get out!!! Sure is great to see him back at Big Pink and to imagine all those best of times! Bless you Garth-- thanks for your gift of music to us all.

Not much is mentioned about Garth, but he is among the greats of the keys. He gave the Band's sound the pavement it needed to move. Integral and inextricable from the Band's identity.

I live in London Ontario, and all the members of the Band grew up nearby except Levon. Richard Manuel is from Stratford, where I grew up. The legacy of their music kind of runs through my mind and veins. Thank you the Band, so much for sharing your journey with us.

Garth is a legend.I saw an interview with Roger Waters saying about his version of The Wall in Berlin with the Band as some of the artists.And about the fact that he used Garth on several songs because he was in awe of him and his talent.

No other band has moved me more. I have a picture of Big Pink on my bedroom wall, great conversation piece. But you really don't want to get me started talking about The Band, as I'm likely to never stop.

Loved this video - found Big Pink in the fall of 2014 after getting lost at first following the dodgy directions from a girl in a shop in Woodstock, It was one of those moments when you get a thrill from finding something that had such great cultural importance. Seeing the video reminded me of the day we drove there. Didn't want to disturb the owners, of course, so just had a quick photo stop outside.

Wow, this is history people. The Band is such an extraordinary band, and for that reason, they created some of the finest music the world will ever hear. This is incredible.

Fantastic. I've always admired Garth's ability and although he was never in the forefront of the band on stage, I feel he was the power behind it musically.

That whole area around woodstock n.y. is magical..our band is about 60 miles away, but we did alot of festival and shows near there in the 1990's...the woodstock spirit is still alive.

Such a beautiful short movie, loved the band for years. The final couple of minutes contain the most pure music for the heart and soul , I have ever heard. So uplifting in these days of shadows and fear.

I bought "The Basement Tapes" on cassette in 1975 and still have it in a box full of my old tapes. I no longer have a cassette player and can't listen to it anymore. Several years later I bought "Music From Big Pink" when it came out on those half-speed master disc albums they used to make. I still listen to it on a very old Pioneer turntable, amp and speakers. The music will live forever!

I once had listen to the Basement Tapes while driving all day with my wife. Drove 8 hours from Calgary to Regina, listening to it over and over again. She had never heard of this record, it was the first time for her. At first, I can tell she didn't know what to think of these songs. I thought she was going to tell me to throw it out the window. After I got through the entire four sides the first time, she was hooked.

The church of Garth, priceless. The last couple of minutes say more musically than anything I've heard recently.

I visited "BIG PINK" House yesterday when I visited Woodstock, NY and shared the history of the house with the people that were with me.

By the way, for anyone who loves the Basement Tapes, for my money... pound for pound...Dylan's album, Planet Waves is in the top five list of every album Bob recorded. And, The Band is the back up band. Give it a listen if you haven't yet. Released in 74, its the album with Forever Young, and a personal favorite, Hazel. "Hazel... dirty blond hair... I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen with you anywhere!" OMG, The Band sparkles like Sapphires on this album, every nuance, every subtlety. The magic of Robbie, Rick, Richard, Garth and Levon. Like the Fab Four, what they did, can never be duplicated. Like ancient seers; mountain men singing folk songs from days of yore.

I luckily stayed in the music industry and eventually purchased Stax Studios in Memphis then started several smaller specialty labels and now own a not for profit 501-c-3 American Heritage Music Preservation and Voice of Memphis Music.. preserving artist , broadcast material. films, records, interviews,, and more.. AS someone says in these little comments record record then ask questions.. Always make sure the machine is rolling... *)O(* MY emotions hit me much more these days as I grow older and physically not as well*)O(*

Wow. I'm completely gobsmacked. I'm a massive fan of The Band and I don't think I've *ever* heard Garth Hudson talk so much in all my years scouring first books and then the net for any info I could find on The Band. This is AWESOME!!

My partner and I, along with a good buddy, made the trek up to West Saugerties, NY a few years ago - after going to one of Levon's "Midnight Rambles" at his home in Woodstock - and found "Big Pink". There are no signs directing folks to the house, nor any indication whatsoever that musical history was made there. But it was quite thrilling to see the outside (still kind of pink) of the house where The Band - and later Dylan and The Band - many such wonderful music! RIP Richard, Rick & Levon.

yep! one hell of a driveway ,,thinking how many times they all bumped down it,,to make such beautiful music in that lil pink house,, I wont forget the mins, I stood in the drive by the basement,,its quite,and peaceful still ,,please if you do pass that way ,,please show the respect of hollowed ground,,I think it should remain a place not too overly viewed,,landmarked...for me to see it once,,is more than i deserve
