Such a beautiful series of photos. Bob and his multitudes of loves. The translation is a bit shite to be fair. And I’m damned if I can remember just at this moment what album this is on. I know it but my brain fails me. Such a documented life. And so are others. The weird thing is no one knows. The traces. Reminds me of my boring PhD thesis which was not boring because of the people’s wonderful stories which constituted it but for the straitjacket of the despairing format in which I had to write it in order to pass and get a better job (hahahaha). I still hear those stories in my head. 24/25 years on. The Amazing People of Glasgow. The Catholics, the Protestants, The Jews (actually I didn’t interview any Jews but that wasn’t due to prejudice btw) The Presbyterians (fuckin loads of elders and just plain members I interviewed). I almost wet myself laughing at times and I cried buckets. What I didn’t find out about single ends and sex on Sundays and kids being made to wear uncomfortable state clothes in the 30s to mark them out as poor, and love and hate and hardship and music and class and domestic violence and alcohol use and abuse and sectarianism and racism and the power of women and the brute force of men….. I could go on. I wanted out of Glasgow but I did love the people. Just couldn’t stand the air of aggression always under the surface and fffffs the daylight issues. Going out to lunch in January in the dark with my colleagues. Too much to bear. Being constantly identified as a Catholic by birth was also too much to bear. And feeling frightened when I wore a beautiful green Zara jacket. For crying out loud. I had to leave. Been on the run most of my life.
