Years ago, people said, "Bob Dylan went electric? That's going to flop." No. No, it didn't. I'm 65 years old, and I got a "Blood on the Tracks" eight-track for Christmas in high school. I am still listening to his music today, about 49 years later. I've seriously thought about having his version of, "Hard Times" at my funeral, but my life hasn't been that dreary, and no one would understand. At least people would walk away puzzled. After all, I have been known as an odd guy.

Tom Petty was such a humble man. Most big rock stars wouldn't want to accept being in Dylan's shadow, but Tom didn't mind at all. He was honored to be there in a minor role, as he said, "I was learning from the great BOB Dylan, and having a great time." (Para-phrased) Tom Petty, loved and missed by so many of us.

I grew up on Dylan and love him to this day. Stood in line 12 hours and thru the night back in the day before the ticket line even opened at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan back around "77-78," but it was all worth it. Once I got the tickets... I was in heaven! Namaste. From a Vietnam Era Marine Corps veteran.

I saw Dylan with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers play Wembley Arena in London in 1987, presumably it was on the same tour. It was one of my top 5 gigs of all time. I recall vividly that Dylan's voice was individually routed to an unusual trapezoid speaker fixed high above center stage. The Heartbreakers (and probably Dylan's guitars) were routed to two traditional PA stacks left and right. The trapezoid speaker gave Dylan's voice a colossal presence and definition that isn't really captured fully in this excellent video and it was also mixed slightly higher. Which is to say that this performance was even more amazing than it seems here. The Heartbreakers performed brilliantly throughout, beautiful arrangements, beautiful playing. My respect for Tom Petty went up several notches thereafter. Whole thing a simple case of mind = blown.

Thanks very much for giving us this interesting and technical information. Must have been an unforgettable experience, i agree the Heartbreaers were more then excellent. And also don’t forget the female background vocals. This was absolutely briljant and once in a lifetime
@Gregorovitch144
@Gregorovitch144 7 ай бұрын
@@Dylan-only-vocals I don't actually recall seeing the backing singers seen here at Wembley. That could of course be because the stage was much deeper at Wembley and the Heartbreakers were playing virtually unlighted well behind Dylan, not together as seen in this vid. The singers could have been there lurking behind, but I'm pretty sure I didn't hear them, I'd have probably noticed and looked for them. BTW the audio for this vid was obviously captured direct from the mix desk which is why there was no way really they could capture the remarkable sound of that unusual speaker cab used for Dylan's vocals, no way to reproduce the effect of it.

Dylan + Petty and the Heartbreakers had two tours, one in the first part of 86 and then late in 87. The short tour with the Dead came in the middle of these tours. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bob_Dylan_concert_tours?wprov=sfti1#1980s

That's a great point. How I see Bob is a lot like something he said, early on, if I remember right, about Woody Guthrie. Said it was the voice of somebody very strong and very much alone. I've heard stories of this tour with Tom Petty (& the heartbrekers) being Bobs' "Band". I think Tom & the boys opened up, then stayed & played with/for Bob. We didn't see that, so I don't know if this IS that tour, which would have been cool if it HAD been & seen them open, but STILL, seeing them TOGETHER is a cool treat to have found. I've always thought that Toms voice was complemtrary to Bobs. Whenever they sang together, it sounded good. In The Wilburys and here onstage. And what FANTASTIC fast paced version of "Don't Worry Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"!! It all has a very LOOSE feeling, but also a VERY TOGETHER sound to it. Damn - GOTTA LOVE IT!!. Thanks for posting!!

1986年3月10日にて彼のコンサートを拝見しました。アコースティックギターを掻き鳴らす姿は圧巻で、以後3度ほどジャパンツアーがある度に行きました。  彼の放つエネルギーに常に圧倒されます。

Bob was one of the kind singer song writer who gave you a complete beauty in every song really the best song of all time. Anyway each one's own. But for me as a song writer I've always went through Bob's lyrics and maybe stolen one or more line's from his brain waves. 🧠. Love you Bob always be the best 👌 human being in my world.

It makes me curious that no Bob Dylan and the Heartbreakers live in concert was never officially released . Conflicting record companies or what ? This certainly sounds more than worthy .
