Original footage of Bob's full performance with 2, then 1 and zero engines on while flying the Shrike Commander 500S. The full feathered prop, engines out loop, point roll, then landing on alternate wheels, and ending with a taxi back to the starting point is quite a sequence.

Bob was my grandfather. When I was going to high school in Torrance je taughtt me how to fly when he wasn't doing airshow. By the time I graduated high school in 1982 I had my commercial IFR Multi. After going to Riddle in Prescott I've been flying for Netjets since 1986.

I had the good fortune to fly round trip from Salinas to Torrance in a C172 around 1985 as a passenger. That and 235 skydives is the extent of my civil aviation experience. Your grandfather was profoundly inspirational.

I have been to many airshows since I was a kid in the 80s. Many times I saw Bob Hoover fly in his Shrike. I regret to say that I kind of brushed it off, because I wanted to see the Blue Angels and all of the other military aircraft. I had no idea how much of an absolute badass this man was. It wasn't until I became an adult, and unfortunately never again had the chance to see him fly, that I learned about who Bob Hoover really was. An absolute legend. The story of him stealing the FW-190 and escaping Germany in WWII - my God.

Had the pleasure of seeing Bob and Old Yeller perform in the summer of 68 or 69 at a small airport in League City, Texas (not there anymore). I was mesmerized by the skill and of course the sound of the wonderful P51 Mustang.

The first time I saw Bob fly was at Stewart Air Force Base, now an International Airport, in N.Y. in the mid to late 80's. He Flew my ALL-TIME FAVORITE WWII FIGHTER, THE P51 MUSTANG! Then he flew the Commander and did such AMAZING things WITHOUT engine power and STOP in the EXACT SAME SPOT HE STARTED! If my memory serves me, he stated the commander had NO modifications, it was exactly the same as any you could purchase. He also stated if pilots new their aircraft that well, there would be less fatalities.

The first pass was inverted, both engines feathered, 2feet off the ground the entire length of the runway. The memory is so foggy in my mind, that I suspect I'm making it up! It could be apocryphal but I remember hearing that when Hoover retired from the air show circuit, no one really entertained the idea of having a successor to his demonstration because the air show underwriters didn't trust anyone else to do what Hoover was doing in that Shrike Commander. It was extremely dangerous envelope pushing flying the feathered edge stuff. I believe a saw an interview with a modern military test pilot explained also, what hoover was doing in that plane, is almost unexplainable.

Did the aircraft have strengthened wing spars for aerobatic manoevres? In NZ in the early days the smaller Aero Commander had wing spar issues just in normal flight, with wing separations happening on occasions, and people lost confidence in them.

I've seen Bob Hoover perform the engine out roll to landing in a Shrike Commander, complete with an engine start and taxi back on the runway, in Harlingen, Texas. It was back in the pre-"socially correct" days when the Confederate Air Force still existed and was HQ'd in Harlingen, Texas. I was an air traffic controller with the Confederate Air Force, with the rank of colonel, as all of us had, in those days. I frequently flew my T-6 Texan or P-51 Mustang with them., and have flown in their "Tora, Tora, Tora" show. I, along with about 75% of the CAF membership, left when the decision was made to move HQ wing to the tourist metropolis of Midland, Texas, against a negative membership vote, despite the city of Memphis essentially offering us the entire Sparta AFB and offering to pay the utilities. Sorry, but I can only see three reasons to get off the interstate in Midland, and all three can be accomplished at any gas station. Buy gas, use the restroom, grab something to drink or nibble on. The Confederate Air Force rapidly failed, lost over 2/3 of their aircraft, and became the Commemorative Air Force, largely unknown today. They used to have the only flying B-29, FiFi. Can't even claim that today. Doc is in much better shape and flies more. B-17 and B-25 rides today are a dime a dozen. I'm left and right seat rated on both aircraft.

Whenever i was at an air-show and the Confederate Air Force was there, it meant something. Same with other legends. I remember seeing the lady wing-walker for the first time and was just amazed at her. But the Confederate Air Force was a traveling force and the Tora, Tora, Tora show was amazing.
