Regardless of how you feel about Bob Knight, he was undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches ever. A great teacher of life as well. I often think of how many lives he helped shape...

After 6 minutes I can see this will probably be the best interview ever of Bob Knight.

In 6th grade I sent a letter to Bobby Knight and several other coaches saying I wanted to play college basketball. Like 1990, height of his fame. As an adult, I'm 5'6", it was not a realistic dream :). But he's the only response I got. And it was less than a month later, I got a letter back. Basketball was the 3rd thing it talked about. Like I'm sure he got tons of this stuff, like all the other coaches I sent letters too. But he's the only one that had clearly thought about it, knew how unlikely it was for anyone to make it as a D1 athlete, and crafted a letter that motivated kids to do well in school, listen to their parents, then practice basketball. Sure, it was a stock letter that was autosigned that went out to many thousands of kids who wrote him. But he actually took the time to think about how to respond to all those letters and send a message the propelled them forward as humans and citizens. As an adult, parent, and youth coach now, that means a lot.

As someone born (1970) and raised in Indiana, Coach Knight is the best of all time! There has never been a more plain-spoken man who regrets nothing and stands up for what he believes in. Rest in peace Coach, you deserve it as much as anyone ever has, and thank you!

The world needs more coaches and teachers like Bob Knight...RIP

Growing up as a kid in Indianapolis playing basketball every coach I’ve ever had has referenced something from Coach Bob Knight. He was truly a model of Excellence and the fruit of his labor as a coach from his former players speaks of it. RIP Coach

All things considered, America today could massively benefit from a bunch of Bob Knights teaching our boys and young men.

The first 4 mins of this interview is all I needed to see as to why the coach was who is was. Those woman taught him disapline and he was met with concequences in life. Something that has been lacking for decades in this country. Todays world is too soft for the likes of coach Knight. He had his time and Im willing to bet his players all turned out pretty good in life because of him. RIP

Grew up in the 70's-80's in Indpls, IN & I'll always remember being an IU basketball fan. The day's of my youth loving that program.

Was sitting in the dentist chair in Lubbock that overlooked a golf course. Had a drill in my mouth and saw some clubs go flying. I starting hitting my dentist on the arm and pointed. He said “ Bob hit another bad shot. My son was at tech while he coach there. He had a friend that was on the team but really never played. He had not seen the guy in a while and asked him what he was doing. Guy told him he was going to graduate school. My son said I’ll bet that is setting you back. The guy told my son that it was not costing him anything. He said that if they graduated Coach would pay all cost for graduate school.

We need more Bobby Knights.

Living in Florida I became an Indiana basketball fan watching Coach Knight. RIP Coach Knight. Love this interview.

Coach Knight , basketball was never my thing. Nor was discipline. I was accidentally exposed to one of your speeches , unfortunately into my mid-twenties. Instantly, I was an admirer. I thought , what a hard s.o.b. ! I grew up with no male influence that didn't come with a bottle. As expected , I'd followed suit. Something deep inside me said , this is exactly what a mentor is. This was in the mid 80s. I constantly scanned sports pages , magazines , for your name. I'd gradually applied expectations and self discipline to my unruly lifestyle. I liked being challenged and discipline did just that. Not always successful, I always did learn something about myself. At 60 now , father of 2 sons , I used things I learned from you as a template while raising my own. Today , both will say , " he's a hard ass ". I was and still am. Though a bit softer approach nowadays. ( these softer generations are just pitiful ). I always taught mine to expect more from themselves than those around them did. Be humble , respectful, and lead by example. So far so good. Thank you from someone you never knew. Your legacy will inspire countless others who dare to examine where many standards of excellence were born. You had a profound effect on this man and I just wanted to acknowledge you as a true mentor from afar. I was saddened by your passing and hope your family is at peace as I'm sure you are. It's such a rare moment in life when we could take in the words and advice from an all-time great in their field of expertise. This is one of those rare moments and I thank the video uploader, Audiorama, for presenting this opportunity. After reading "A Season On The Brink" by John Feinstein so, so many years ago now, I thought I had a handle on who Bob Knight was. This hour long interview, expertly done by Joe Buck, embellishes and explains the motivations of Coach Knight in that book. I always found him a fascinating man, a great leader of men. And I find myself in today's world, looking for the next Bob Knight.....to no avail.

Thank you coach! I grew up one hour from Bloomington and was fortunate to witness your start at Indiana through your retirement at Texas Tech! You were simply the best!!! And thank you for sending my grandfather a letter of encouragement when he was failing with cancer. RIP coach Knight

As a kid who grew up in Indiana in the 70s, I saw him as the model for how to play. He never recruited me (coz I wasn't that good :) but he was such a model for all of us. God rest his soul. Nice work Joe.

I was in my car when I heard the bad news, so I had no way to throw a chair across the street, but I certainly wanted to. In all seriousness, college basketball will never be the same coach Knight. We loved Coach Knight in Lubbock. He did sooo much for our program and our players. The best Coach Knight story in Lubbock involved our star player, Andre Emmitt. Andre got into some type of dispute with Coach. He told Coach Knight that he was quitting the team. He called his mother and informed her of his decision. Mrs. Emmitt called Coach Knight and said that Andre did not have her permission to quit and that Coach had her permission to punish Andre however he saw fit. Coach told Andre that he had full weekend, starting Friday night to run 50 miles in our arena. Pat Knight was in charge of tracking Andre's progress. By Sunday evening, the 50 miles were completed and Andre was back on the team. Andre learned a great lesson from a legendary Coach. GUNS UP COACH KNIGHT, REST IN PEACE AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN LUBBOCK!!!

Bob Knight represents what made America GREAT at one time, AND what is missing virtually entirely in American today... strong men teaching younger men how to be strong men. As a result, we have the country in the state that it's currently in. RIP Coach.

How every time when Coach COULD have blown his own horn, he always deflected that praise onto his players, just gives me chills. The man ALWAYS did this!!!! And Kudos to Buck this interview was fantastic, BUT first and foremost it was FAIR!! No gotcha, Jeremy Schaap (Craap), ESPN bullshit questions.

Growing up just thirty-five miles east from Orrville, Ohio I had the chance to live the life he mentioned in this interview from 1965 until 1985 and I am better for it. You were taught the values of hard work, discipline, NEVER giving less than 100% in anything you do, along with knowing you'd be held accountable for yourself in ALL aspects of life. Respect for elders, teachers and people in authority. These things have slowly eroded and have been forgotten by a VAST amount of people, as the years have passed to where people have to now accept people being mediocre and settling for people being "just average". I also had the privilege of meeting Coach Knight where I am living now in Las Vegas, and I can tell you from experience he was VERY loyal to the people he knew.

We need some Bob Knights and Herb Brooks in coaching again

Coach Knight is definitely in my top 3 college basketball coaches of all time.. I'm a UNC fan so of course I'm going to pick Dean Smith and Roy Williams for 1 & 2.. However the respect I have for this man is beyond belief.. It's the determination, teaching, drive, grit, and most of all a guide to see kids get there degrees & succeed... You sir are what coaching is all about and you're deeply missed... Thank you for the fire you put under those kids and all the excitement you brought to each & every game I seen you coach... 🙏🏻🤘🏻

One of the reasons I became an IU fan was because of Bob Knight. He made his players go to class and had a squeaky clean program. Granted, he came with baggage, but a kid going to play for coach knew what he was getting in to. Coach had a dislike for the media, and I understood why. They printed all of the negatives, but ask his former players about what he did for them. Landon Turner said that Knight was the first face he saw after he was hospitalized after his accident. Indiana was very fortunate to have had him for as long as they did. IU will never be the same. Rest In Peace coach.

A true coach of basketball and teacher in life to his players. Almost all of his haters weren't the players or parents of the players he coached. Isiah has said how grateful he was that Knight had the courage to coach him hard and not try to be his friend like most coaches now do..
