Man these guys were tough!! Got dirty, got hurt, blood, teeth knocked out....played in sub zero weather and had to deal with frost bite...ah, the good old days of the NFL! Love you Bob, one of the GOAT's.

What a great player. One of the best defensive tackles ever. Lilly had a combination of strength and quickness that was really rare for that position. If I had to pick an all time team I would pick him and Merlin Olsen as my defensive tackles.

Great player on a great team. Lombardi fooled him at the 11 yard line on the last drive. Gillingham pulled to the right and Lilly chased. Mercein ran a counter thru the vacated hole to the three, which set up the winning TD. I was there. Freezing.

Awesome interview, thanks so much for posting...I grew up in Cocoa Beach, Fl. in the (born in '57) 60's and 70's and as we had no team in Fl., I LOVED the Packers as a young boy, Paul Hornung, Bart Starr, Jerry Kramer and Herb Adderly were my fave players and then Shula showed up in Miami in '70 I became a huge Dolphins fan but I always respected Bob Lilly as a HOF talent player and a true gentleman. They beat my Dolphins in the '71 season SB, but the following year the Dolphins had their Perfect Season...great memories.

Simple Fact. The Packers were next level tough!! Vincent Thomas Lombardi forged a team of Blue Steel and Iron Hearts. All NFL players by definition are tough. The Packers simply elevated that time honored Badge of Courage to an art form. "We reached down. And we found a little Lombardi," in Jerry Kramers immortal words. The Packers "FOUND LOMBARDI" in every post season game they appeared In after the 1960 Championship game. NINE DIFFERENT TIMES REACHING INTO THE WELL AND FINDING GOLD!! This encounter in Lombardis next to last game elevates them to a team for the ages. Playing under the worst conditions ever dredged up by Mother Nature, they marched more than 60 yards on that final drive to glory. The Lombardi Packers were simply a team like no other.

@@seveglider8406 And his 29 yard sack of Miami Dolphins QB Bob Griese in Super Bowl VI is truly iconic. He remains "Mr. Cowboy". The greatest defensive tackle ever.
@seveglider84062 жыл бұрын
@@yourroyalhighness7662 It is debatable as to who is the greatest defensive tackle ever. As I previously stated Lilly is 1 of the all time greatest defensive players ever. He ranks right up there with Butkus, Taylor, Randy White and Deacon Jones. 2 of Lilly's contemporaries, Alan Page and Merlin Olsen rank up there with Lilly. Aaron Donald also ranks up there with all the players I have listed. In my opinion, at his peak, Lilly has a slight edge over Olsen and Page. However Olsen was more consistent than Lilly and Page over the course of their entire careers. Before his career ends, Aaron Donald may be considered better than all 3 of them. Already Donald is considered 1 of the all time greats and he has at least 3 more peak seasons ahead of him.

@seveglider84062 жыл бұрын
@@yourroyalhighness7662 You should watch one Los Angeles Rams game and see how great Aaron Donald is. The Washington Football team should have a name which reminds all Americans that citizens of Washington D.C. don't have any representation in the Federal Government! I will try to think of one.

Lombardi was pissed Starr called the timeout before Kramers block as probably everybody else on the field and in the stadium was because hell froze over that day. Starr was asking permission to run the same play but without the handoff because they'd been stopped 3x because nobody could get their footing on the ice. Lombardi with his earmuffs is agreeing for a change and says OK run the play and let's get the hell out of here. First game in NFL history played by arctic troops. Landry and Lombardi had been Giants assistants together so what one knew so did the other. Except I don't think Landry had earmuffs that day. Probably the same fedora. Just checked hoodie over the fedora.

Jerry Kramer and Ken Bowman double-teamed Jethro Pugh, for Bart Starr's game-winning TD. If they had tried running the play to Bob Lilly's side, could he have stuffed Starr, and preserved the win, for the Cowboys?
@lsrasr158 Жыл бұрын
Jerry Kramer said the play was intended against Pugh. Pugh played more upright and Kramer said they could wedge Pugh for Starr to do the QB sneak.
@georgesouthwick70002 ай бұрын
I will always believe that Lombardi intentionally turned off the “electric blanket”. He knew the Packers were no match for the Cowboys speed on a normal field, so he decided to take it away by letting the field freeze. If that game had been played in Dallas, the Cowboys would have killed Green Bay………I guess that’s why they call it “the home field advantage”…….lol
