Bob McDonald, of Rivergrove Farm in Hailey, ID, describes the different surfaces installed at TYL Farm in Wellington, FL. Each arena at TYL Farm has a footing and sand ideal for its main discipline and location.
The jumping arena requires cushion and stability, but must allow the foot to move over the surface so it doesn't get stuck. The solution to this was Master's Blend by Premier Equestrian. It's a mixture of ground athletic shoes, providing cushion, and textiles and fibers, providing stability.
The indoor arena uses a subterranean irrigation system which allows complete control over the amount of moisture in the surface. That combined with Premier's ArenaAid footing creates a springy cushion, perfect for dressage riders.
The round pen, which also uses ArenaAid, requires a secure surface that won't get too deep. "It's all about the sand to start with. You have to have a decent sand."
