Dr. Gates makes everything so fascinating. He’s got that golden voice, with the likes of Morgan Freeman and James Earl Jones. Such eloquence. I adore his demeanor and delivery. I assume he’s won Emmy’s. If not, he’s deserving of an entire wall of awards. Dr. Gates, you’re the STAR of the show. ✨💫✨

My mom was doing this genealogy stuff a couple decades ago, and I learned that my ancestors were "land speculators" who started towns in various places around the nation. I am supposedly related (not directly) to President Garfield. My ancestors were part of the Underground Railroad "assistance program" in Southwestern Ohio (Price Hill), a fact that I am quite proud of. And that is just my Mom's side. Hey, Doc... do my tree, man.

What I learned is that no matter what anybody thought in the past was the biggest deal to them. They went out to fight some war or to accomplish some great feat We look back on it now as an unimportant thing. Very distant from ourselves. We must maintain the fact that no matter what is going on today it is equally unimportant in the grand scheme of time. No matter how big the war is today we should never fight it because 300 years from now nobody will care

But people do care! And the consequences of despots winning are still there! And in case that's too much negativity for you, the consequences of tyrants losing are thankfully there too. History lives, history matters!

I’ve been trying to find definitive evidence that one of my 5th great granduncles from New Brunswick, Canada, fought at Waterloo, as family legend has it. I know he was transferred from Canada to England in November 1814 as the War of 1812 was starting to wrap up. I found someone with his name in the paybook for the 23rd Light Dragoons that started on December 25, 1814 and went through three years. In it, that person was recorded as a Waterloo veteran. If I can find the paybook that preceded the 1814-1817 one and see that the person is not in that one, I would be very confident that he is my distant relative. Unfortunately, that earlier paybook is not online, and I can’t afford to hire someone to go to the archives in London to look it up. The first mention I’ve found of that legend was published in 1900 in a Who’s Who of New Brunswick mini bio of another family member, so it is an old tale. That early date reinforces my thoughts that this is a legitimate story. But, I really need that earlier paybook to verify it.

Hi, Kathy. Thanks for your comment. What an amazing project. It sounds like you know a lot about this great granduncle. With all you know, it seems like you are on the right track, and you know where to find the information. We hope you're able to get this information at some point. Best of luck to you.

I try to never miss an episode. I find it fascinating how closely related we are in this country! And not just to each other, but to the whole world. When I first started watching, the what’s it like, question bugged me. But I’ve come to realize how that question would impact this guy with only 6 cousins, 4 of which are only partial cousins. My fraternal grandfather died in a pool accident before his half brother and sister were born. My mother’s only sibling, a sister, had three children by two men. My family is very small. I don’t have relationships with those cousins a cause of distance, and religion.

Thanks for reaching out to Ancestry, Renee. We regret any confusion and will be happy to provide some assistance. You're welcome to reach out to our customer support team through the following link: support.ancestry.com/s/contactsupport. When it comes to minor's their tests should be activated by a parent or legal guardian via their account. DNA tests involve a one time cost for the main results, but you can also purchase access to additional DNA tools with a DNA plus membership (which is $29 for 6 months). In addition to this we sell subscription for access to family history content, such as historical documents and databases. These are sold separately to DNA tests. If you can see such a billing it is likely that a subscription was purchased on the login used. We hope this is helpful!

We're sorry to hear that you are having some trouble finding your family. Have you considered taking the AncestryDNA test? Our test is a great way of finding biological family as it will match you with any relatives who have also taken our test. DNA testing is becoming increasingly popular; there are currently 20 million people (and counting) in the AncestryDNA database and many of our members have found siblings, parents or cousins with our DNA test. You can message your matches for free which means members are able to collaborate with each other on their shared family history. We will include an article here that explains how you can best find biological family with our service: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Finding-Biological-Family. For an insight into what you could expect from the test, check out the following article: support.ancestry.com/s/article/What-to-Expect-from-AncestryDNA?language=en_US. "Odenkirk is an anglicized variant of the German locational surname Odenkirchen or from the Dutch locational surname Oudekerk which literally means “old church”. Notable people with the surname include: Bill Odenkirk (born 1965), American comedy writer." "A user from Hong Kong says the name Odenkirk is of Scandinavian origin and means "Odins church"." "The surname Odekirk is of Dutch origin. It is a variant of the name 'Oudekerk', which is made up of two words, 'oude' and 'kerk'. 'Oude' in Dutch means 'old,' and 'kerk' translates to 'church', so the surname Odekirk essentially means 'old church'. This surname likely originated as a topographic name for someone who lived near an old church or as an occupational name for a person who worked at such a place. Dutch surnames often reflected the occupation or the place of residence of an individual, and this seems to hold true for the name Odekirk. It is also important to note that spelling variations of this name can include Ouderkirk, Oudekerk, and others, which further support the interpretation of the name's meaning. Given the variance in spellings, the surname might have geographical differences within the Netherlands itself. The surname is relatively rare and most prevalent in the United States, presumably carried there by Dutch immigrants."
