Take a bow, Gunner! This ranks as the greatest postgame performance by a broadcaster in sports history. Interviewed 21 players/manager/executives/politicians in five minutes, 43 seconds! Twenty-one! Didn't call him The Gunner for nothin'! Oh, and check out that sports coat . . . #BeatEmBucs

Was a little young for this but I started to follow baseball in 1969 and became a Pirates fan late that season and haven't looked back. I grew up outside New York and listened to the Gunner and Nellie King many a night on KDKA radio. You can kiss it goodbye! We had them all the way! A hoover. We need a bloop and a blast. How about a little chicken on the hill with Will.

Thank Bing Crosby for this. He had a Kinescope recording made of the game to watch later. He was superstitious and would not watch it live. The film was found in his old wine cellar decades later.

The Pirates were outscored 55 runs to 27, a better than 2-1 margin. They HAVE to be the only team to have been outscored by that ratio and yet won. Pittsburgh won the close games, while the Yankees won the blowouts. Honestly, the Yankees "should" have won the series in 5 games.

They're not working to cure cancer or putting their lives on the line to defend our freedom, but they act like the world owes them $5M+ a year to play a game. The egos have gotten so big that many of them spend much of that mony insulating themselves from the people who ultimately pay their salaries. But you're absolutely right about one thing, In a capitalist free market, they're free to be paid whatever the market will bear. That doesn't mean I'm not free to hope and pray that that market crashes down on them in spectacular fashion real soon.

@@GuyWithAnOpinion2 “GFY” I had to look it up, does your mom want to fill in, cause I would gladly spend time with her, and teaching her son about economics. “They play a GAME!” Yes, they play a game and MLB generates a lot of freaking money, most of their owners are billionaires, and the players want what they generate for the teams. I understand it is difficult to relate with them when they’re getting millions, more than we’ll earn, but heck they worked hard at their craft and earned their money.

Amazing but true fact: when Prince interviewed Maz, he did not know how the game was won. Don't recall the story behind that, but I guess he got sidetracked then had to rush to the clubhouse. He didn't see the homer and no one told him till later. This was the greatest moment in Pittsburgh sports history. The Immaculate Reception is a very distant second, even though some consider it the greatest play ever in the NFL.

Bob Prince later wrote that he didn't get to see Bill Mazeroski's home run. He had gone to the locker room when it appeared the Pirates were going to win, but got called back to the press box when the Yankees tied the game. Just as he was about to reach the press box, there was a roar from the crowd and his producer yelled at him to get back to the locker room. He got there just as he was going on the air. He first interviewed Hal Smith, whose home run he had seen. He realized Mazeroski had the big blow when everyone pushed him up on the platform. Beginning at 0:40, he ad-libbed his way through an interview. After one of the most iconic moments in baseball history, Mazeroski got about 15 seconds of national air time.

Interesting fact: Three different guys named Hal Smith played for the Pirates. some people said hal Smith was the real hero, as he hit a homer to keep the Bucs in the game. I think Stengel (the Yanks' manager) should've started Whitey Ford in games 1 and 4. I'm a Yankee fan, but that was an exciting ending, nonetheless. I'm also glad the Cubs won it all last year.

Gary, I'm curious, as a Yankees fan, which do you think is their greatest team? I'm a Pirates fan, but I'm also a baseball fan. The Yankees team that I think was the best was the team that won 4 straight in the late 30's, when DiMaggio was starting out.
@RayManzarekRocks

Ford had a bad season by his standards (12-9 record), partly because of arm problems. Ditmar (15-9) was the best Yankees starter in the regular season. And Turley was their best money pitcher at the time. That said, Ford should have pitched out of the bullpen in Game 7. No matter. The better team won the series.

@@sdgakatbk The '27 team, followed closely by the '98 crew. Both won over 70% of their regular-season games. While the '98 team won 114 games vs. 110 for the '27 bunch, the '27 Yanks had a slightly better regular-season record due to there being 154 games played in '27 vs. 162 in '98.
