A bit of a comparison regarding French Foreign Legionaries for the Marx Play Set Captain Gallant. PLUS a few items arrived from Russia, so we take a gander at what we have.

Great vid Bob. I used to have lots of those Timpo FFL with the Arabs as well. I also had the coloured/swoppet Timpo FFL and Arabs with the Timpo Fort, in the 70s. They are all great figures.

One thing I don't think you mentioned is that the Marx Capt. Gallant figures as well as the Timpo FFL are MODERN legionnaires circa 1950s, whereas the AIP guys are more 1900 or so. I had the Oliver at one point but got rid of them, because the 60mm size didn't fit in with other pieces. Another great thing Marx did were the Capt Gallant accessories; water well, crate of rifles, French machine gun on tripod, canteens and various water bottles, hitching post for horses, etc. Unfortunately has not been reissued in a long time----I'm glad I got my 2 sets when I did.

Hey Kelly, The Capt. Gallant set is awesome, I unknowingly sold the Machine gun with a bunch of cheaapy plastic soldiers :) I am a big proponenet of buying the book before diving into a hobby. I didnt listen to my own advise :)

@@robertgagne2388 Lol Yeah the toy soldier hobby can grab you that way. Btw, speaking of books, there is a pretty good one called "A History Of Toy Soldier" by a guy in Italy named---appropriately enough---Luigi Toiati. I've seen excerpts online and it's VERY good, lots of humor and human-interest stuff. He talks about his family and upbringing and other things---it's not just stuffy museum history....Yeah Capt. Gallant was a good TV show too for its time. I remember seeing a commercial that Buster Crabbe did for the sponsor of the show, Heinz 57 Sauce or Ketchup or whatever it was. There he was in his FFL costume, biting into a hamburger!

That's a nice Foreign Legion set you've built up. Unfortunately I don't think the Marx sets were available in the UK when I was a kid so most of the stuff you've been showing recently is new to me. By the way, the 'swoppet' Legionnaire is by Timpo not Britains. They started making toy soldiers here in the UK in about 1960 and the Foreign Legion were added in 1971, a year after the Arabs were introduced (they also come with light blue legs). A Desert Fort was also available which became Fort Sahara in 1974. It included figures (some mounted), Arab tents, a cannon and an oasis! Timpo are very collectable in Europe with some of the rarer models going for a lot of money. Michael Maughhan has a book 'Timpo Model Toys', now in its fourth edition, with full colour photos of all the ranges.

Hey, off topic question, but what do you think of the blood and valor stuff? I play Warhammer but want to get into more historical stuff but don't know where to start
@robertgagne23882 жыл бұрын
:) Never off topic :), I just looked at the Blood and Valor game system and it looks interesting, its a WW1 game system from what I saw, looks cool. There are several gaming systems out there that are very good, at the 28MM scale you have Warlord Games, - they create WW2 Bolt Action , this is a skirmish type set up. they also do a Napoleonic's with Black Powder rules another 28mm system very good. Also Naval Battles both WW2 and wooden ships and iron men battles, WW2 aviation wargame. thats just a few, hit thier web site and you may find something you enjoy. Then there is a smaller scale- Flames of War which is also a WW2 miniature wargame system. Give those systems a looking over. Hope that helps a bit. OH and look at the OSPREY books they are producing all sorts of war gaming systems.
