- Gazzew Bobagum aka Boba Pink (55g) vs. Gateron Silent Red (45g)
- Both switches are stock (no extra lube, film, etc.)
Both are mechanical keyboard silent linear switches with a lower spring weight. Are the Bobagums worth the extra cost over the Gateron Silent Reds?
How do they feel? After years of using Reds, I am shocked at how different the Bobagums feel. The Bobagums are significantly smoother, with noticeably less stem wobble. The switch travel distance seems less in the Bobagums. Also, the actuation point feels quicker, with less travel before the switch registers. I haven’t done any measurements to confirm this, but I can certainly feel a difference from the Silent Reds.
In my first few minutes of typing on the Bobagums, I registered a few keys by accident. However, it didn’t take long to get acclimated. The Bobagums (55g) feel a hair lighter than the Gateron Silent Reds (45g) perhaps due to its smoothness. But I like it! Some may prefer a heavier spring weight.
The verdict: if you like silent linear switches with a lower spring weight, Gateron Silent Reds offer a good value. However, the Bobagums come out on top due to an incredibly smooth typing experience.
Note: The Silent Red switches are used with hand-cut foam between the plate and PCB, while the Bobagum switches are used with pre-cut foam. Both foams are similar in density and thickness, but this may have a slight effect on the sound differences.
Bonus switches at the end of the video: Gazzew Boba U4, Zeal Orange Healios V2, Gateron Silent Black Ink V2, Gateron Silent Brown

I really didn't expect something called "silent" to be the louder of the two switches. The Gaterons are almost raspy.

I think that's because bobagums are probably the quietest stock silent linear because the lubed leaf and spring. The silent reds are still quiet, just not close to Bobagums.

Thanks for the sound comparison. I currently am testing silent linears as well, so far with Bobagum, Silent Alpaca and Silent Ink V2. How does Gateron silent red compare to Silent Ink V2? I assume they both have the same travel distance. I want to know whether the big price difference is worth it.
@jasonk.2739

Yes, Gateron Silent Reds and Silent Ink V2’s have the same travel distance. How do they compare? For me the biggest difference between the two is the spring weight. The Silent Reds are rated around 45g actuation while the Silent Ink V2’s are rated at 60g. Also, the Inks are smoother. That said, the Silent Reds are a solid choice and a great value. Is the price difference between Gateron Silents and the Silent Inks worth it? That’s a hard one to define, since the Inks are more than double the price. Are the Inks better? Yes. Are they more than twice as good? Maybe not. Would I personally buy Inks over Silents? Yes. But then I would buy Bobagums over Inks. I think it depends on your budget and personal preference. Once you figure out your preferred spring weight range, get the best (for you) within that range.

@@jasonk.2739 silent alpacas are, when filmed and lubed, probably the most silent out of the three. But why I dont like them that much is because of the tiny bit shorter travel compared to the Gaterons. Top housing is a bit wobbly stock, bobagums are the best in this regard. Also, some keycaps are a bit loose when installed on silent alpacas, this is also observed on other durock/jwk silents (daybreak and dolphin).

Personally, I like the Silent Reds than the Bobagum. I like the presence of the "thocky" sound than the complete silence. I know the U4Ts seems to be the new thock switch goto now, but I find that I prefer the thocks without the "clacks".

@@TheBrandoGR Yup, I think I definitely would.. Just that right now, unless you have or plan to have multiple keyboards, I feel it’s a bit restrictive, customizablility-wise. I’m always put off by that, especially considering the price range of those boards with Topre on.

@@gelotress479 Yeah that's true. you can't really get any good MX sliders anymore and as far as layout options go you really just have whatever is there. I honestly still think it's worth it though. I still love my FC660c after months of use.

Thanks! I'm on the fence about the weight to get. Don't have much experience with switches yet, so having a really hard time to choose between the 52, 62, and 68g versions. Wish I could buy a tester for Gazzew switches. Got any tips on how to choose?
@jasonk.2739

I hear you, it's hard to choose without actually testing the switches personally. Maybe try the Boba Sample Pack with 9 different switches, including 55, 62 and 68 grams on mkultra.click.

In case it helps, here are my ramblings on why some may choose a lighter or heavier spring. Of course, it is 100% preference, with no right or wrong answers. A lighter spring can mean longer typing sessions with less hand fatigue. I like the lighter spring and quiet switches because it puts me in sort of a “zen” mode when writing. I also feel it helps me type a little faster. But if you type with a heavier hand, a light spring may be uncomfortable. Think of a car with a really light suspension, bottoming out every time you hit a bump. For example, when I first put in a light spring switch in my space bar, my thumb started to hurt because I was ramming it with the same force as my previous heavier spring, bottoming out hard every time. I had to train myself to hit the space bar softer. Also, a light spring may result in unintended actuations. And some simply prefer to have a little weight behind each key press. Try out different spring weights. If the Boba sample pack is out of stock, there are some good (and cheap) options for testers for Gateron switches, etc. on aliexpress. Not the same as Gazzews, but it gives you an idea of what might be too light or too heavy for you.

@@Yggdrasil42 you could also just buy various springs and test on your own switches, it really isn't expensive, and you can either open your switches with a switch opener or just use some screw driver. If you already are looking for some unique switches, like Boba Gum, I assume you already know the rest, am I right or wrong?
