Turning on the Lights in a Landscape
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
I find complete solace painting landscapes in my studio… for me painting a landscape with a group of plein air painters is a time honored approach. You can read about Cezanne and Pissarro rolling up their canvases and trekking the countryside together. Sounds romantic, doesn’t it? But for me, I prefer the solitude of my quiet studio. I make up my landscapes - those places where I want to be.
You may be surprised that there are many ways to begin painting a landscape. There are colorful beginning techniques or starting monochromatically. When I start a landscape, I normally begin with only black and white. Why? I work on the composition first in black and white, then add color later.
This BobBlast shows you how I “turn on the lights” in an earlier black and white study.
My materials are simple and to the point: 300 lb watercolor paper, transparent and opaque acrylic paint, a bucket of water and plenty of paper towels.
After my black and white study has dried, I wipe a transparent yellow over the entire surface. My yellow of choice is Holbein’s Marigold. Because it is transparent, you can still see the composition structure and all the values under the color. The lights have been turned on with glorious yellow! I can leave it as a final painting or continue on with more color.
I can repeat this same technique with a “failed” colorful painting… Very easy to go back in with a Marigold or other transparent color (Luminous Opera is transparent) - a simple fix like this can change the whole impact!
Turn on the lights with transparent color!
If you are interested in painting with me, I teach workshops, both Online and In-Person. Check out my Workshop Schedule for dates and locations!

Please show how you get those great levels of blues into a landscape on a dark background then tint with yellow and white. They ad dimention and mystery in a scene but it is hard to accomplish sometimes.

Can't you make paint transparent by mixing a little with water???????
@RobertBurridge
@RobertBurridge 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question - you can certainly try that, but I suggest that you paint with a "real" transparent paint, then match it with your technique - Then see if you are satified.
@StorytellingHeadshots
@StorytellingHeadshots 7 ай бұрын
For less frustration, it’s better to use pigments that have been manufactured to be transparent.
