In this video, I share some of my thoughts about where I think the sporting habits of America are headed.
If you disagree, I would love to know why. I think football has quite a hold on American life, and so I don't believe it will be affected by the rise of soccer in the way baseball and probably basketball will.

I think that America still has some structural issues regarding soccer. I mean, i heard that in the US, soccer is a rich kids' sport, whereas everywhere else in the world, it a poor kids' sport. This alone is a big issue. Soccer needs to be accessible for everybody.

I can absolutely confirm this. For most areas, it can be very financially hard on a family to have a child playing high level football.

It’s mostly due to a America is more of a urban/country environment so most kids either play baseball, football, and basketball at the nearest basketball courts/baseball fields or pay for a basketball hoops( if ever drive through a american home you’d often see basketball ball hoops in their drive way)…or buy a football

Two things need to happen. First, soccer academies need to be less pay to play. When lower income families gain access to academies, that will certainly help. The main academy in my city is ridiculously expensive. Second, professional leagues need to create some form of Promotion and Relegation. It doesnt have to be as crazy as it is in England. In Mexico, a team has to be bad for several years in a row before they are relegated. But without the idea that teams can move up and down the pyramid, the system is not going to be viable long term.

Kids who want to pay for an academy can do that, but football is something you play, not just "train for". Everybody can play, and if you want structured games, you join a local club - and if you're good you can take it up a notch, even to semi-pro or fulltime contract. Academies and teams with owners are not required at any level. It's not AAU basketball.

One of the best-known differences between British and American English is the fact that the sport known as football in Great Britain is usually called soccer in the United States. Because the sport originated in England, it is often assumed that soccer is an Americanism. In fact, the word is thoroughly British in origin. So why is it that Americans (not to mention Canadians, Australians, and others) are likelier to use the word than Brits are? The answer lies in how the sport developed in each country. Although football-type games have been around for centuries, the sport we know today is often said to have begun in 1863, when England’s newly formed Football Association wrote down a set of rules. At the time, it was the most widely played game of its kind in the country, but it wasn’t the only one. Rugby football, named after an English boarding school, was a variation that allowed players to carry and run with the ball to advance it toward the goal. The game played under the Football Association’s rules thus became known as association football. Inevitably, the names would be shortened. Id like to say that baseball has made a lot of dramatic changes to the game recently which has already seen lots of success. But yes soccer is growing like wildfire here a lot of my high school friends love it the most popular kids at my school are the soccer players

Actually it tells a lot about your country's lack of knowledge and lack of _football culture_ if you think it's possible. WC2022 the US team was positive but there is long way to go.

'Low scoring' is a criticism that's thrown at football but if you actually look at the NFL, if it wasn't for the made up scoring and touchdowns were worth 1, then most games would finish 2-1, 3-2, 2 all or some other low variation. There's literally no difference except for an arbitrary scoring system. If football said 7 points for a goal and one for corners you'd get scores exactly like the NFL.

People don't understand that low score is an asset. The teams are always one mistake away from losing the match. I'm watching the rugby world cup and most of the match have zéro interrest, the best team crush the weaker team by 30-40 points, it's boring and stupid.

Low scoring means that every goal matters. If points were given in 2s and 3s, it only makes the number of points feel much less impactful.

I have a 2012 Kid. His elementary school recess soccer games are insane. There’s about 10 kids at his school that are on the local development club team that play RCL 1 in WA state and a bunch of others that play on the rec club. Parents have had to come in for principal meetings because of Fist fights breaking out. Harsh tackles that have lead to concussions, leg injuries. They’ve assigned an extra recess duty just to referee. Because not a single one wants to stop playing. Even a few of the girls that play club soccer get out there and join. All these kids are going to feed into the high school that won State last season. My 10yr old has 3x 75min trainings a week with weekend games that require 90min+ travel. He does One on ones with a D1 player and still drags me to the field for more soccer. Coming from a baseball family - I love it. It’s been so fun to learn and watch the sport with him. His coach has him working as a Ball playing CB that starts every buildout. Having him explain to me situations and decisions he makes within the concepts his coach has him working on made me realize how little I understand about this very complex game.

That’s such an American thing 😂 here in Portugal everyone plays football since we’re born and it’s the most popular recess activity in schools, with hundreds of kids playing at the same time in small pitches. I’m not going to say that there isn’t the occasional fist fight because of the game, but I played football almost in every recess for 10 years and I must’ve seen about half a dozen of fist fights or less. The point of the game here is (or was) to score and to have fun, while in the US you only care about the flare and the confrontations. It’s “joga bonito”, not “joga até partires os tornozelos do teu adversário”

The franchise system in the MLS doesn’t work well with soccer in my opinion. In order to grow the sport you need high stakes, such as relegation and promotion. It’s what drives the passion and skill seen in Europe.

NBA dominates basketball, MLB dominates baseball, and no one outside the US cares about American football. MLS has to compete against the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A... if MLS wants to reach that level they need their league to be competitive.

RE: Soccer only started gaining ground in the 90’s That isn’t entirely true because the MLS predecessor, the North American Soccer League (NASL), was actually quite popular in the 1970s and early 1980s. Some of their matches (mainly those featuring the New York Cosmos who had Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer) had over 70,000 in attendance. The league folded in 1984, but it laid the foundations for the sport in the country and ultimately paved the way for the creation of MLS in 1996, who up to this point has learned from the NASL’s mistakes.

That’s definitely a fair point, but I think it was still a bit of a “fad” as in it wasn’t taken too seriously as a male sport in the US. Because there are quite a few videos on KZfaq discussing the failures of the NASL, I wanted to focus more on the reasoning behind why we didn’t pick it up in the first place. I definitely should have mentioned the NASL a bit, though.

As an European that grew with this sport as a mundane activity, reading some of the comments, I realised how many kids from today are invested in football/soccer, which means the US teams will be probably much, much better in 10-15 years. Big football, US is really joining, it will be interesting! With the huge selection base, I see some US teams playing for internation trophies not so far in the future.

I do not understand, why someone says soccer is boring. In average you watch 3 goals per match. However you also watch 10-20 unscored goals, dramatic goalkeeper saves and so on. Also the players aren't stupidly roll the ball across the pitch. This is a complex task how to deliver the ball closer to forwards.

People do get excited about deep flys that look like they're going all the way or catches made at the wall, denying home runs. That's what a misses or a save is. Similarly, a throw into the end zone that's an inch away from a receiver's fingertips or swatted away by the cornerback would be an exciting play in football. No one would honestly say different.

I love football, but i find full matches can be boring, so just watch the highlights. But for me the main thrill of the sport is keeping up with who beat who, whos getting relegated etc, and diving into tactical analysis.

Like all sport, you have to know some player, the strategy, the rule and the history of each team to fully appreciate a full game. Especially if their is not a lot of goal opportunity. I think a lot of people that find the sport boring, only watch mid match, with not great team. I like football, but honestly, some match are not that great to watch. It easier to love the sport when you support a team with a good level. It's not already the case in the US.

I played football when I lived in the US as a child. The youth league culture around DC is huge. How will the American networks handle 45 mins + extra time without commercial breaks? That is my biggest question. WC26 will be pivotal!

Yeah my problem with American sports is just that like I enjoy playing basketball however I just cringe at all the ads and little annoying games they play during timeouts and at the end of quarters it's so annoying I think if the TV company's just accept the fact that the ads have to be done differently for football it will take over America

The soccer fans booed the performer >.< You should watch the video of the 2021 general annual meeting of FC Bayern Munich, one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world . It was a scandal. Fans and fan clubs rioted because of FC Bayern Munich's questionable sponsorship with Qatar Airways. In the end the fans were screaming "Hainer, get out!", in the sense of resigning. Herbert Hainer was the president of the Club at that time and former CEO of Adidas. Well, the American Networks can do it exactly in the same way that every other network around the world does it. It's just a thing that the american are not used to it, but everywhere else it works perfectly. Actually the business around the advertising in football soccer is astronomically big.

Rodney marsh said in his autobiography that when NASL soccer started to get higher ratings than MLB, baseball threatened to end its Contract with tv and after that soccer was only shown regionally.

To give you an idea, soccer has the same or perhaps more importance than the Olympics, it is the king of sports, everyone is waiting for the World Cup and soccer as the sport that represents planet earth, I think the United States was unaware of this a lot time and only now is he discovering it, soccer is art, soccer is passion, soccer is life itself, sometimes even 0 to 0 is exciting because it is difficult to win and ultimately one of the two rivals scores a goal

Well said. The league system in Europe keeps just about every game interesting. In the us, teams between the poorer teams have trouble attracting fans.

Soccer is indeed growing in size. The MLS has been growing and has become the 4th most profitable league in NA. I still will defend baseball and hockey and football and basketball for all my life.

I got into the sports when I saw pictures of 2002 Brazil national team online. Although I never took it seriously until I watched Inazuma Eleven where I learned football is the best sports and from that day on, I became a football fan.

Even if one were to find football/soccer boring, they would quickly realize there are quite a few sports that can be considered to be even more boring (that a lot of people still enjoy), such as 1-day and 5-day cricket, carom billiards, golf, and baseball. A sport does not have to be always exiting all the time (such as Ice Hockey, Tennis, Basketball, and Volleyball) to be well loved by many.

@@Ameisenigelytk Sorry, the original comment may have confused you a bit. I had put Volleyball among the sports that are "always exiting", alongside Ice Hockey, Tennis, and Basketball. These are sports that are known for their near constant tension. My point was that there were sports that were much more boring than these sports that are still loved nonetheless

@@Ameisenigelytk I was about to say that. I love watching volleyball, although I watch football/soccer much more often. I think there's a spectacle feeling to soccer that isn't in volleyball, but it is a really exciting game. Brazil rocks at it too, so I watch it often when they're playing important games, but I never got into volleyball club matches as I do regarding soccer.

the biggest difference for soccer in Europe and USA is that soccer in Europe (and elsewhere) starts at club level. Even in small towns and villages. While - correct me when I am wrong - all sports in USA are school based.

Towns have clubs. I coached at the youth level at a town club. We have instructional games on Saturdays, then we have the travel league that you try out for and those games are on Sundays. I started off as an instructional coach and they're young kids to get them acclimated to the sport. After one season of that I was approached if I wanted my own travel team of which I said yes. I forgot how young the ages are for travel soccer but I believe I started with an U9 team. From there I had many of these players stay with me over the years and then they played for their highschool. Some will even play club soccer and high school soccer at the same time. I do know someone mentioned in the comments about how soccer is a rich person's sport. I know the club I coached for that if a family couldn't afford the registration fee for their child, they would ask them to fill out this form in order to make sure they're not gaming the system and once the league did their investigation, they'd wave the fees. I know this because one players family didn't have the money and I had them get in contact so the kid could play. Soccer is going to take over at some point. It's too massive. Baseball, football, basketball... Nothing can stop it.

@askme2985 They have soccer "clubs" but most parents view them no more than suped up daycare. In a lot of IS communities, HS and especially College sports, have a stranglehold. I'm from STL, where we treat soccer very seriously, and it still can't compete with HS and College Football, BBall, and Baseball. And they have less risk than the clubs, because Schools are not going to move away or shut down due to a lack of funding (unless it's reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally poor in a HS case) or not generating revenue. It's a school, it brings the economics to a town.

Soccer in the US was originally club based. However, you are correct. Unlike virtually everywhere else in the world, virtually all sports became school based. It is interesting to note that the original college football game in America was played using "Association" (soccer) rules. Only later did the colleges switch from Association rules to Rugby rules, and then later still to create their own rules. Thus American rules football was created by American colleges. I also find it interesting that their is a distinct movement in American College football to effectively make the colleges non-academic "clubs" that pay their players just like the professional clubs do. Someone needs to make a thoughtful decision to either have school-based sports or not. Having schools act like professional clubs, will ruin our schools.

I have seen quality/calibre of American men's national soccer grow astronomically over the last thirty years. USA women have been very good for a long time - hopefully the administrators dont kill the sport because the fan base has grown incredibly. MLS now attracts some of the best second tier global talent. USA can easily take out some of the national teams that have been at it for a long time - way ahead of China🍻

Because most sport in USA (except basketball i think) are more of a "highlights compilations" than a fluid game. They expect in soccer watch a gol and then turn around, drink a beer, watch like 18234738247 adds, and more; football (socccer) is just way more than that, the expectation before a gol is many times better than just watching it and you r done. This type of sport fans will never understand than a 0-0 game can be dozen of times better than a 4-0.

Certainly you have potential. You are now top of the Concacaf. You have surpassed Mexico, or Mexico had sunk below. Anyway this new position has also challenges. And I think one of them is stagnation. USA can remain the top dog in the Concacaf but this will limit their potential. To reach the upper echelons the US teams and players has to face stronger teams. For me, this is South America and Europe. Maybe not now, but in the next few years they will have to choose to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish trying to grow in the ocean. The america cup is good starting point, but to definitely grow I will week that USA face south American teams each year in the Libertadores. USA has some very good things to compete and I think they can surprise a lot. Just imagine the shock of an American team winning the Libertadores?

I'm quite happy with how MLS is going right now. Teams are getting more competitive and the quality of the players are increasing. Some teams like Timbers and Sounders have great fan base and actually making good atmosphere inside the stadium, better than some English Premier League fan base.

I’m a little late to this but here is my take. I’m a father that grew up playing baseball, basketball, and football. Every kid I knew played soccer until they could play football and then stopped with soccer. As a parent my son has taken an interest in soccer so we went to our first MLS game (St Louis City SC). I couldn’t believe the atmosphere. Everyone stood the entire time and even though the match was a 0-0 tie it was more entertaining than most professional sporting games I’ve been to. I can see why it’s a growing sport.

The UK is the size of Oregon, and has 92 teams in the professional leagues. In contrast, the distance between my team, the Seattle Sounders, and Messi's team, Inter Miami, is the same as the distance between Paris and Riyadh. Maybe someday, soccer in the US could adopt promotion and relegation, but it's not well established enough as an institution for such massive swings in fortune for people investing hundreds of millions of dollars to build it up.

You know, the stakes aren't the only thing that make promotion/relegation a good thing. It's also the attachment of the clubs to their home towns. With these big franchises only the big cities care about their clubs, but with smaller (still professional) clubs everywhere the mass of profesional players raises exponentially.

I don't think there's been a bigger opportunity for association football to thrive in the US & Canada more than now. And at least the MLS can learn from the NASL's mistakes when Pele originally joined the league. As someone who's been into the football sphere and has been a fan of Man City & Barcelona for almost the last decade, one of the greatest things about this sport is the atmosphere regardless of which country or league you go to. Something about it just makes me so hyped to root for a team and become a fan of them.

There is one really major adjustment that, in my opinion, would accelerate the growth of the game in the US the most and that is a gradual but dramatic expansion of our Nations League and by extension the Gold Cup. Here's how. If we look at some of the best players in MLS that are here in the largest numbers, a really large amount of them are from South America. So here's what I want. Starting with the highest profile South American countries, start including those countries in our Nations League competition and the Gold Cup for those who qualify. The catch- many of these international windows only really line up with availability from North American leagues, so for the Brazils and Argentinas of the world, they would simply cap their best players that are employed in North America at any given time. This leads to greater revenue, more competitions, and a wider player pool for their national teams as they cap more players. From our standpoint, it makes a pro career in North America that much more attractive. Young players that aren't making their national team in Europe would absolutely come to North America for the purpose of getting cap-tied. We have it within our ability to tie our North American leagues to some of the most prestigious national teams in the world, while simultaneously elevating the quality and marketability of our competitions by A Lot. The depth of MLS would improve so much, and you'd better believe it will prompt more talented Americans to play here too. With better competition across the board, there's only so much losing that we can watch on our own soil before some of Our players come home in a meaningful way as well. Along with that, I'd love to see some other countries increase their presence in our leagues just for the purpose of fielding a B team for national play. I'd be personally in favor of bringing in all of Oceania plus Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel and Singapore even if they don't have players that are here professionally. The minnows of CONCACAF could use some competition as well, and I think that any small state with money to spend can benefit a great deal from getting involved in this- especially if they have a significant amount of dual citizens in the US. They can generate interest and have better visibility, while the minnows of CONCACAF probably pick up some points at their expense. Side note, I assume the guest nations would have an MLS stadium that they play in as their home ground. This would also mean that the lower tiers of Nations League would have a lot more games being played in MLS stadia. I think we have some really large opportunities for growth when the interests and efforts of the national team and our professional leagues fully align. This can be done in a way that's incredibly synergistic, and I think this premise can go a long way if we get it going.

A real game-changer will be when American squads start to play in the Libertadores da América. Today, the North American Champions League isn't very competitive. When some of the best teams outside of Europe right now, like River Plate, Boca, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense (and many others - I mean, every season a new, fresh, competitive team rises down here) kick Messi's Inter in the balls, the average American soccer fan will start to be stoked about this sport. When a good rivalry between an American team and a South American team begins to unfold on a continental level, soccer will become really big in the US. For people that say Soccer is a low scoring game. Low scoring. Believe it or not... it makes people glued to the game and also fanatic about it. You can't bat an eye. It's the anticipation for goals that. When you think of it the average touchdowns in NFL is between 4- 5 per game. The number is high but the number of touchdowns are still 4.69 and the English Premier league averages 3.87 goals per game... so the difference is not that large.

In that short span it has already become my second favorite sport. I’m a huge American Football fan and it’ll likely always be my favorite, but I am really enjoying soccer. These two leagues kept harassing each other in the early days by taking each other's players so they Established a national agreement where among other things they decided to play a final series against each other to determine the Champions of baseball. Fast forward 50 years and suddenly there's too many teams for each team in each league to play each other an even amount of times so they split into Divisions and since different Divisions play a different sceduale of games you have to have a playoff to truly determine who is the best team in each league. Other sports would adopt these systems. Problem is alot of these leagues do it soley because that's what baseball did and now they treat it as some grand finale instead of it being used to determine who is the best team

As an outsider, I think the problem with soccer popularity in the US is the format. Soccer has only a single break, and American TV just love commercials - and the show aspect of sports with lots of breaks. Perhaps the fall in popularity of cable and broadcast, and the growth of streaming services can help break this barrier.

I think soccer is far from boring. There's so much to watch with tactics, with countering back and forth. I think football (American) is a more boring sport, as there's far too many breaks, and then they spend time to set up and get into position again, so unlike soccer, where the lack of breaks makes it much more fluid, and players seem to rely more on creativity than on physicality.

While I do agree that basketball has probably hit its ceiling in the USA, it has evolved to look overseas since the 92 Olympics. I think there’s actually more Chinese nba fans than Americans now lol. Baseball is being carried rn by its popularity in Spanish Caribbean and Japan while passion and participation in the states has dwindled. basketball is a true global sport now imo, not on the same level as soccer but perhaps equal if not greater than the international participation in cricket. I’m glad you brought this up. I think I missed my point in the video. I was more referring to how soccer has major leagues in several different countries where the playing abilities are at similar levels. Though basketball is very popular throughout the world, the level of those league are not on the same playing field as the NBA. I should have been more specific about that. Thanks for the feedback!

I agree that the potential for soccer will def see it surpass baseball and hockey in terms of participation and fans in the near future. Its already happening in front of our eyes. considering how relatively new alot of these basketball leagues are, im surprised at the level of quality they have. alot of the college stars in ncaa that dont make it in nba end up having very successful careers overseas. youve even seen highschool players forgo college to develop overseas, doe it isnt common af yet. Give it time, and i think the other leagues will eventually get closer in level to the nba.

@@S1LVAW0LF Basketball is indeed popular in China thank to Ming for some extend but like soccer, Basketball still can't beat Pingpong aka Table tennis yet in China. And Soccer also have advantage in China since it have more government support since one of CCP program is to make China a soccer nation (hope it fail). And for Baseball, it still number one in Japan thank to High School Baseball.

In Argentina the most popular sport is Football soccer, everyone know this. But the second in line is basketball. No Argentine team can defeat an NBA team, but we still produce local talents and some of them reach the NBA. Anyway, the competition here takes a lot the shape of football leagues. Every small city has 5 or 6 basketball teams (usually the same clubs that have football), each team competes in a local league or if they are good enough in some of the national leagues. There are promotions and relegations each year. And the fans usually are very passionate about their teams, but not as much as football. In football there is Barb wire, ditches, police and a 40 yards gap between rivals fans to avoid clashes.

Soccer is beautiful. I can see the beauty in american football since I love all the tactics/strategy involved in it, but it's a sport that is more fun playing than watching, at least in the format it is right now. Too many pauses. That's why I think basketball is better, among american sports. Americans will come to appreciate the beauty of soccer/football as well, I'm sure, but the whole MLS must be reworked. No incentives there.

I think the combination of people from Latin America immigrating to the US and influencers like IShowSpeed will make it the most popular sport in the US eventually. It is so almost everywhere else, so it would make sense in such a small and connected world. Football is the only sport I bother watching and it is a lot of fun to play. I always played it school during breaks growing up here in Norway and still like to play it from time to time at 27 with colleagues. All you need is a ball, even two stones speparated can count as a goal.

Honestly, I have started believing what I have said even more in the past year. With Messi coming to the MLS, Soccer in America is kind of "cool" now (or at least it's cooler than it was). So I think more kids will want to play it, and the sport will slowly become more popular than Baseball and maybe even basketball here. I don't think sentiment toward the sport from people above the age of 25 will change as quickly though, so the impact of all this probably won't be truly understood until the kids today become actual consumers and start spending their money toward soccer matches/jerseys/video games etc. more than any other sport. Time will tell.

It will/has surpassed the NHL. It can surpass MLB. It won't surpass the NBA, because college basketball is big. MLS ratings are etill quite low. The World Cup has grown huge in the US, but the only games that made it into the top 100 broadcasts in 2022 were the ones involving the US team. I like soccer, and would rather it than baseball. However, for me that means World Cup, Gold Cup, Euro championship. MLS has a long way to go to dethrone any of the big 3. I live in NYC metro area, and our 2 teams hardly register a blip on the sports radar.

It depends on demographics bro. The US as a whole still has a ways to go, your right on that. However once you start controlling for age, soccer is clearly gonna land in the top three in the near future. Its actually older people who drag down the ratings as there less interested in the sport. Young people on the other hand and specially hispanic young people is where the growth is getting insanely high.

Soccer is still niche, because of MLS not because of the European leagues or the world cup per say... most American sports fans do not really know who the USMNT players vs the few known women's players, but the women are a different story., MLS lacks marketing and aggression IMHO
