I just do not have the courage for a career change, maybe at least for now. I will try to take some short courses and do online research about the profession of physio. @@valarie-kayeferguson1736 Great question! There should be a number of out-patient PT clinics in your area. I suggest calling them up ahead of time & asking if they offer shadowing. Since you'll just be observing the PT/PTA & asking them questions without active participation in treatments, it should be just as easy as filling out a liability paper & spending an afternoon with them. Ask the PT/PTA plenty of questions & research the average salary for your area to see if it's something you believe is worth pursuing. If you're interested in the field but want to try something different, check into Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy, too! Best of luck :D

I’m in the last 5 months of a 20-month PTA program, and although it isn’t as long as the DPT program, it’s awfully grueling. The professors (all DPTs) explain that we learn nearly everything that a PT does, which is what makes it very challenging, since it’s shoved into such a short period of time. I know it will be worth it though! I’ve been on some clinical rotations already and I am blown away by how much I’ve learned. It’s really the hands-on experience that facilitates learning, and you’re completely right, you can’t be afraid to be hands-on! Also wanting to help people & being committed to the education piece is so important as you said- a LMT who started out in our program failed after the second semester, her reason for starting the program was “it makes more money than massage therapy!”

I appreciate the information. I have been out of high school for roughly 7 years now. I was a former truck driver (18 wheeler) figuring where to go in life while traveling and making some money to survive at least. The saying, “you do not know what you have until you lose it” resonated when I have not been exercising as I had back in high school and being constantly over stressed. I am on my last year of community college before transferring. Before this pandemic occurred, my current direction was to be a phys Ed teacher. I can see it being removed from grade schools in 15-20 years. I have been searching which sport medicine field to go into. One recommendation was to look into OT and PT. After a bit of advice from my sister, who is an OT, mentioned that PT was a better suit for what I love. I have decided to follow down that path since taking an AP course was very fascinating. I am still researching all about PT, which seems to be the best fit for what I have been reading and watching. Thank you for all of the content you have been providing. Keep up the phenomenal work.

I am a Radiologic Technologist, and across the years, I feel that I have a knack for applying both empathy and a helping hand for each patient that I attend. For example, I even advise them on how to appropriately sit up from the exam table. And at the end of the visit, many of them leave with grateful smiles. 4. I am just passing by, interested. Thank you for being sincere about this field.

If you really love PT and are willing to suffer through all the frustrations that will come to this dying profession, then go for it. Otherwise, consider becoming an orthotist, or a PA, or a NP instead. I really think there is a better future in those fields. PT and OT will be replaced by written/video instructions given to patients by a Dr. or nurse unless Obamacare gets overturned. Drastic cuts to therapies are coming in 2020.

I wish I had gone into PT instead of nursing. I really admire our physical therapists-they are the absolute best! I work in a 5 Star Medicare rehab facility, on the rehab unit. I tell everyone who will listen that when they arrive; the single most important thing they can do to ensure a good outcome is to listen to their physical therapists and do everything they say. ( also the occupational and speech therapists too, Im not overlooking them). It is so nice to see my elderly patients get better and go home! I have been in eldercare for 40 years, and it seems to me that physical therapy continues to improve decade after decade, whereas nursing and medicine is kind of stagnant. (That’s just my opinion).

20+ years of experience as a PT here. If you don’t mind student loans making half what nurse practitioner makes or physician assistant go for it. It’s not a easy job and pay didn’t change much in last 10 years. If you really love it you should do it. It’s definitely not what it used to be in early 90s.

I'm pursuing a Bachelor's in Kinesiology, but I'm heavily interested in a DPT program after. It's a toss up between MOT and DPT, would you recommend job shadowing both careers to make the final decision?

I’m in the last 5 months of my DPT program right now and this was a great video! The main downside I would say is the cost of tuition relative to the salary to be made. Unless there is assistance in some way shape or form, most students now a days will be in six figure debt myself included.

Joseph Dykes CMS is planning an 8% cut to PT next year and for PTA’s it’s going to be 15-25%. Then insurance companies will follow. It’s a travesty that the APTA has only in the last couple of years done a modicum of trying to stave off massive cuts. Now that Obamacare is the law of the land for 10 years and plenty of people are enjoying others paying for their health insurance....My thoughts are,” I wonder what the salaries of PT’s at the APTA are making along with their administrative counterparts.?”Surely they Are deserved because they are the wizards of smart and they “know better”.,,,it will be justified by stating we need six figure salaries because we live in an expensiveness part of the United States! it’s all elitism and being out of touch with reality with what PT’s in the trenches are experiencing. What really bothers me is that I contacted the APTA, I wrote to the APTA . I told them that supporting Obamacare (the Unaffordable healthcare act ) was a terrible idea because everything that was said was a lie. None of what they said was true and of course I turned out to be right. Jonathan Gruber (the primary architect of Obamacare said that Americans would have to be stupid to support something like this ) and of course it was forced through the house and the senate on Christmas Eve and passed at 11 o’clock at night on a completely partisan vote. NOT ONE republican voted for that. For such impactful legislation that is absolutely based upon wealth transfers, it should’ve never taken place but it’s all history now. so we have to fix the mess that the former president created and hopefully we will in 2020.

Big Fan Moment: (cue to 7:20 min. mark on introvert v. extrovert) Both of you fellows are "allocentric," which Webster's defines as: "having one's interest and attention centered on other persons," to which I would add in person and more markedly focused on their personal good. But I never thought about Bob's point, either, that extroverts get their renewed energy from interaction with others, while introverts derive their power supply from breaks. Both are simply styles, I guess...Kind of a nature gave me this modality bit. (P.S. Not trolling...Just thankful for the tip from you both-- I just bought the Thermotex Platinum pad, two days ago, am using it as I write these words and have greatly relieved the pain and restored greater mobility from a neck injury that I have been restricted by for decades. So, with the neck exercises you've demonstrated elsewhere, I am going to do even better over time. Thanks again for your jaunty and very practical insturctions here, on KZfaq.) Cheers from Plymouth, MI.
