Funny you say that. Given the state of current affairs in the world, I make it a point to play this song with my windows rolled down in hopes of people in the crosswalk or next to me at stoplights to hear some good music, maybe even peak their curiosity on who the artist is by Shazaming it (wishful thinking lol). Music is such an amazing gift, bringing more people together than dividing each other.

Oh my gosh! My mom introduced me to this song when I was a little girl. I remember when I was about nine, she bought me a record player, and this record was one of a few she had for me to play. I remember getting the record and just playing the song over and over and over again. It means a lot to me because I just lost my mom on March 23rd of this year, so the songs she brought me up on are more profound to me now. A lot of people, when they hear this song, say, "I didn't know he was a white man?" Somehow, though, I knew. I don't know why or how, but when I found out he was a white man, I wasn't surprised. How about Strawberry Letter 23 by the Brothers Johnson???

If you’re still collecting check out some flea markets around you. Peace ✌️

I'm 68, an American Filipino woman, born and raised in Northern California specifically the Easy Bay Area and I remember when it first was released and played on the local radio stations. I bought the original vinyl 33 rpm album which included other songs of his. I knew back then that Bobby Caldwell is a White young man. Many people were surprised that he is White, many thought that he was a Black. When I was still working my supervisor who is a Black man had come up to me with a younger Black woman who worked with us in the same office. He asked me to verify to her that Bobby Caldwell is a White man. I told her that he is indeed a White man and I even found pics of him from magazines to prove to her afterwards. A record store in Berkeley, CA, LEOPOLD'S, that I often went to buy 45 rpm vinyl records too. It was before Valentine's Day, a 45 rpm vinyl single in the shape of a Red Heart was released of Bobby's song, What You Won't Do For Love, which was hanging from the ceiling at LEOPOLD'S. Unfortunately, I didn't buy it and those that do have it, I envy you. There are so many other artists that have recorded this song but the best version that I have heard and even have bought the CD is the English group, GO WEST which consists of 2 men. Check their version of this beautiful song.

I had a very pro-Black coworker who use to walk around the job singing this song a lot. This song is THE SHIT so it's all good but one day I asked him if he knew Bobby Caldwell was white. He argued me in the ground that Bobby was black. I said no he isnt. "On your break go look the song up on KZfaq." So he did and he was in a state of shock the rest of the day. Didn't sing or say another word that day. (I'm 51 years old and remember seeing him on Solid Gold singing this when I was like nine and even then my jaw dropped when I saw Bobby).
