I shared a table with him and his wife once in a Pizza restaurant in St Andrews because it was very busy and there was a shortage of available spaces. What an absolute gentleman - a real honour.

Knowing he was from Ashington was enough for me,I was taken thete by in my RAF nat ser days by geordie gaffney,wonderful people,their team deserves more.

If Alf Ramsay hadn't taken Bobby Charlton off in quarter final of the 1970 world cup v Germany, England would have won that tournament. England were 2-0 up and Bobby was taken off to save him for the semi final.Franz Beckenbaur who was marking him pushed up and inspired the Germans to a 3-2 victory.

Ere would have been the minor obstacle of the Brazilians in the final, assuming of course we had got past the Italians. However I agree we may well have beaten West Germany had Charlton stayed on.

Norman Hunter came on for Charlton and you would expect a much-vaunted clogger like him to do a good job on Beckenbauer, but he couldn't. As we saw before and often enough after, one-sided, one-paced Hunter was 2nd rate.
