This is from a TV special recorded 9 months before Bobby Darin's death at age 37. He jokes around and then sings a spellbinding version of "If I Were a Carpenter."

I am lucky to say that Bobby Darin was a friend of mine. We spent a lot of time together between 1967 and 1972. For those who love his singing, I want you to know that he was as wonderful a human being as he was a musical artist. He was so kind, compassionate and understanding. He was twelve years older than I was but because he liked me as a person and also enjoyed my songs when I was a young songwriter, he always had time to talk with me. He was a mentor and always gave me great guidance. Such a miraculous person is hard not to miss, even after all the years since he departed. If you had known him, you would have loved him as a person.

Steven Le Viere When under stress and stuff(you ain't heard nothin yet! Put bro in body bag and sang Jolson for weeks to release. So, Al Jolson was my go to guy along with the Beatles.... Then I saw Tony B live in the U.K., sing his Bobby Darin medley at a Jolson festival and he introduced to me Bobby Darin who was far far more than a Dream Lover. I was hooked and have been ever since, not just the singer but the man himself. So when I am under stress like this week caring for Mom 24/7 I go to my musical strengths and happy places. And where are they you may ask? In time order....Al Jolson, Bobby Darin, The Beatles... Thanks Tony B...Babino for your awesome Bobby Darin set in 2005, I owe you one. And thanks Steven for this question, you really got to me...ha ha ha....take care folks and never stop singing!...

Has anyone noticed how little backup music he needs. Its his voice. Unlike today's entertainers who have big loud bands deafing us, revolting dancers with little clothing. This is talent and it is his voice and nothing else.

sadly its the industry that is too lazy to find this level talent. they have their engineers fix everything in the studio. have choreographers design on stage nonsense. in the end there is very little that is true to the singer. its all lazieness that revolves around greed. and its nearly impossible to do it any other way. money just ruins everything it touches

Also, you may not have known this, but he was suffering from a serious heart ailment during this time (his struggles with it were lifelong) though you would never know it to hear the strength and clarity of his voice on this rendition. He passed away not too long after this, if memory serves. Bobby Darin May 14 1936 - Dec 20 1973 Rest easy, friend

I was raised in a remote area. A boy from a different school hitch hiked all the way to my boarding school one weekend to bring me this record. It was a little overwhelming at that age. His mum told me many years later when I finished my first degree at university that he will stay in love with me forever. My heart broke for him. To me he was just a great friend. Unrequited love. It can happen to any one of us. He passed away in his fifties. Every time I hear this song, it takes me way back.

I am watching Bobby Darin sing If I Were A Carpenter and tears are streaming down my cheek. He was a family friend and when he would visit, we would do cabaret type songs. How sad. To me, a 10 year old boy, he showed me the art of performing and once told me that life was no different. That was sad from an entertainer who made so many happy-including me. He was an excellent entertainer and friend to me, my mother and grandmother and anyone who knew him even just long enough to see him put on a great show

It just does NOT get any better than this! I had to watch it twice because once just wasn't enough... the emotion that Mr. Darin puts into this song is beyond beautiful... what happened to music? All the stuff out there now is pure crap.... RIP Mr. Darin. Thank you for the music you gave us.

Can only agree. As you see, I come and watch this so very often. I long to go back. How could anyone imagine back then what would become of the music, while listening to this. I was a child and a teenager in the Seventies, and I was lost after 1980. I still think it was my personal bad luck to have spent my youth after that year :/ And on the other hand: Today Mr. Darin would have survived the surgery. I wished we could change this events: progress of medicine much sooner, 'progress' in music much later- not in my lifetime :) I wished he would have been more happy. I wished he would have had a grave. I often think he did not love himself and wanted to disappear completely, after he had to leave the world. I wished he would know what he still means to us all. Have a peaceful new year, dear friend somewhere in the world :) Greetings from Berlin, Germany.

winterweib I was driving home that December night in 1973 when the DJ on the radio announced that "a rock & roll legend is dead at 37".Still gives the chills. Yes I believe he would have survived the surgery if it happened today. Heart transplants were only 6 years old in 1973 so it would have been a risky option. His ticker was too far gone for the medical technology at the time. I figure he probably didn't love himself that much either. He predicted he wouldn't make it to 40 and simply resigned himself to that fact.

winterweib Thank you..... Happy New Year to you, as well! I completely agree with all of your thoughts...at 49, my formative years were during the 70's and everything was alive and happy...... these days, not so much.

Karen Starks Karen I'm 58 and have been lost in the 50s thru the 70s for years. I am happy with that. I exist well with no problems with that (admittedly I do appreciate the internet and my cell phone, tho) By all means it was alive & happy. People need to stop living to please others. Happy New Year to you too!!!

Karen Starks Karen it might be harder to find great music today but it is out there. Have you listened to any of Brett Dennen's music?. Listen to songs like Someday, Heaven, or Ain't No Reason. Very beautiful and profound stuff Also the music that the group American Authors has put out is very deep and meaningful. I especially like their song Oh What a Life. There still is great music out there to be found
