"Could it be our boy's done something rash?" Louis Armstrong was the first to record the English language version of "Mack the Knife". On first hearing the song, Armstrong is reported to say, "I knew cats like this in New Orleans. Every one of them, they’d stick a knife into you without blinking an eye! ‘Mack the Knife’! Let’s go!" Lotte Lenya, who sang the song in German when the Three Penny Opera was done on Broadway, was in the recording studio during the session, prompting Armstrong to honor her by interpolating her name into the lyrics. Bobby Darin carried that forward in his version.

This song is from a play in the 1930s called The Threepenny Opera' and this version is VERY different from the original. It's worth listening to a version of the original to understand how dark the lyrics are. He mentions Lotta Lenya in the song. She was the wife of the composer.
