how did you apply the beginning stage ? looked like a applicater diped in some drk substance

Just a soft applicator of some sort. Can use cotton balls, soft brush, etc. the dark substance is simply graphite powder. Can get at any art store or amazon.

Could you please share with us as to how you acheive the "whitening" of the graphite/charcoal initial layering so as to create the white(very light shades), for example the "whiteness" of the clouds,or the lightness of the sandy beach.? Is it that you use a special eraser, or use a white charcoal pencil, or alternatively something else? Thank you!
