Buddy, I’d love to hunt with you and the crew. Unfortunately the pandemic has left me a tad short on funds for the coming season. Not even sure I can afford to hunt by myself here at home. I might be stuck shooting ducks on Nintendo this year. 😃

How much is a 3-day goose hunt for two guys?
@dougmccoy12602 жыл бұрын
Bob, make a pattern board and use paper to see the whole pattern. Have a 30 in cardboard circle with an 18in hole for the core. A pallet works, staple the paper to it. Take it out to 50 yds to see what you have. Center the circle on the center of the pattern. Then count core and inside the 30in ring.
@rbutler15192 жыл бұрын
Circle should be drawn after the shot around the densest part of the pattern. I think an actual pattern video would have been better than this video.

I make and load my own bismuth. Mostly 4’s,5’s, and 6’s. They hammer ducks, specks, and snows. I won’t go back to steel again. Plus making it myself I get the cost down significantly. Just started loading TSS duplex loads so I’m excited to see how they perform on geese this season

My oldest gun is a 1963 Manufrance Robust side by side. And the fact that bismuth exists shines a very bright light on the gun's future. In fact, it shines a light on all my guns' future, since most of them cannot fire steel
@supercomp652 жыл бұрын
Tungsten is definitely the way to go for the small bores like 410 and 28 ga and can produce some spectacular kills in the larger guns. That said, at the ranges most birds are shot at, it usually isn't necessary in the larger gauges and due to its tendency to pattern extremely tight even with open chokes, it can make hitting close in birds much more difficult. Bismuth is an excellent substitute for lead. It's nearly as dense as plated lead, responds to chokes like lead, and is softer than any barrel steel so it's safe for older fixed choke guns. This past year was the first year I got serious about loading bismuth and I found that a 2 3/4" shell loaded with 1 1/4 oz #3.5 or 4 plated sphero bismuth from ballistic products at 1450 fps was an absolute duck smashing beast of a load out to about 50-60 yards when shot through a Carlson extended IM choke. If you couldn't kill with that combo, it's probably best to hang it up. Word of advice for those new to bismuth. Bismuth loads typically use a lead target style wad. The petals on the shot cup are thin and damage easily and in loadings over 1 1/8 oz, the top of the shot column is unprotected from the bore. Things like porting, wad grabber chokes ie patternmaster, Carlson Cremator, ect that were optimized for performance with the very thick wads used in steel and other nontox shot will damage some of that exposed bismuth and you are left with a considerably less effective round. You have to think old school for it to work the best. No porting, no wad stoppers, and smooth gradual constriction. Do that and you'll have a winner. Steel is simply a horrible ballistic material any way you cut it, regardless of how fast it's going or how it's shaped which is why I will never go back to using unless it's a last resort.
@grinchyface2 жыл бұрын
There is literally zero difference between the energy in a pellet coming from a 28 than from a 12. They both are often loaded to the same velocities, just a couple eighths of an ounce lighter in the shot charge. a "heavy" 28 gauge shot charge is a mid range load on a 12. .410 is a different story, when a "high brass" hot shell is barely breaking 1100fps. It's harder to find anything under 4 or 5 shot in 28, but anything in that and smaller above kills just the same as a 12 as it does in 28, at the same ranges.

My guess is if you hunt every weekend during the season it might not be worth it, if you miss a bird or two not a big deal. If you travel to hunt, or only go out once or twice, it might be worth it to make each shot count.

I will tell you. Tungsten and bismuth has improved my kill ratio over misses tremendously. I focus alot more and make my shots count

I primarily hunt ruffed grouse and having good ammo is a huge difference. It took me a couple of seasons to get picky about ammo and I run #5 bismuth prairie storm, way less cripples and when I go pheasant hunting sometimes I'll come across ducks in small ponds and it drops big mallards just fine.

I buy a box or two of tungsten every year for turkeys then have the leftovers in my bag when snow goose hunting for those days when they just are not finishing. has been a hunt saver a couple times. number 6 tungsten will reach out and touch them a good distance.

Im switching my goose loads to bismuth. I shot a goose over the weekend that had 6 pellets in the breast and when i was breasting it all were in the meat, none passed through bone and into vitals. Shooting 3 1/2 BBB. The only reason it went down was i broke a wing.

Keep up the video! Love these off season testing and education video! I think it’s crazy how much people spend on gun and don’t buy quality ammo. The gun and ammo work together. There is a lot of good mid grade ammo. Like to see some choke compare video. I have a muller choke. Would like to see how some of the higher chokes compare.

I would love to see some patterning videos with the stoeger and carlson cremator combo
@genekind60992 жыл бұрын
I could talk for days about this. I have shot them all and best answer I have is under 20 yards, all ammunition is equal. Steel, bismuth, titanium... unattainium, it’s all the same at short distance. At 35 yards super fast ammunition loses a significant amount of energy and slows down dramatically. I think the corporate marketing machine preys heavily on waterfowl hunters. Best thing a Fowler can do is pattern his/her shotgun at the distances they expect to shoot. If expensive ammo shoots well, use it. I’ve seen guys shoot greybox ammo from Walmart and just slaughter birds. I’ve also seen guys shoot hyper expensive ammo and miss everything. Patterning is the key to success.
@dougmccoy12602 жыл бұрын
A side note, if one can't shoot well, then expensive shot is really expensive. If you shoot behind a target with cheap shells you will shoot behind also with spendy. You are right on your analysis.

I'd argue the expensive loads are just perfect for kids. Especially in the 410 category. You can get your kids in the field and hunting with a 410 at a younger age and get them the ability of performance loads with lower recoil. Get them hooked a little younger.
@nickb8618 Жыл бұрын
From experience yes. Less cripples and follow up shots are money. Comes out similar in the end really if u make the switch. Boss fan boy I am not but I won’t go back to steel. All you need is 2 3/4 #5 with a Carlson cremator long range

Tungsten makes a 20 gauge in 3 inch chamber equal in range to kill like a 12 gauge on the largest geese and Sandhill cranes so if you own a 20 gauge use tungsten. The price you pay of using a lively handling shotgun and lower recoil than 3 inch and 3.5 inch 12 gauge loads.
@jeffreylocke88082 жыл бұрын
If you have a six and a half pound light 12 gauge using 3 inch tungsten also makes a lively handling shotgun as deadly as you need with acceptable recoil.

If you are flighting ducks just use 3.5mm steel shot ;you just have to get the pattern width right .Decoyed geese use 3.8mm steel. Flighting geese 4.5mm steel. But, you must pattern them with various chokes. then you can save a fortune.But if after gobblers (which we don't have) to get a really tight pattern you may have go to expensive exotic metals that are softer. That’s a fun video and I am sure that you were glad that you were using the heavier Stoeger especially on those harder recoiling tungsten loads. If one wanted to use a mixed load of ammo in their 3 shot limit to “conserve” the more expensive ammo, would you use a tungsten/bismuth as your first round since that “should” be your best shot or have one as your last round aka Hail Mary round since it can shoot further and could knock the bird down dead vs steel? Then have the other two rounds be the steel shot you like such as Black Cloud. A comparison between motion decoys by different brands like Mojo, Lucky Duck 🦆, Northern Flight, etc… could be interesting and informative. 😎

READ: Seen a vid on here dude compared BOSS #4s 1350fps vs the hypersonic #2 1700fps on some ballistic gel at 40 yds. The BOSS went further into the gel and was traveling FASTER than the hypersonic at that distance. Id say timber hunts all you need is steel but big water or field hunting I’d say bismuth is worth the money and if your BIG money tungsten is going to be even better
@danielholder5112 жыл бұрын

Hey Bobby, have you ever considered switching to the stoeger m3500 as your primary shotgun? I think since it’s a more affordable gun a lot more of your fan’s probably use that (not to generalize) it might be something more they can relate to than watching someone use a 1800 dollar Benelli that we could only dream of having. They ever use the same choke system. Just a suggestion that a viewer might think would help. Love the vids man 👍

I very rarely shoot past 40 yards. Do your scouting, set up on the X , and learn when to call My only question is this, #1. Is a duck, goose, turkey, ect. any more dead with bismuth than will steel ?? 2. How many of us, and be honest, can shoot consistently at flying targets, past 40 yards ?? Or for that matter, know what our patterns are and where the gun is shooting ??
@austinevans37182 жыл бұрын
What people don’t realize is 40 yards is a lot further than people think most birds in average are killed 20-35 yards maybe even 15-25 yards and all your really need is steel shot and a bird shot with steel shot be a bird shot with bismuth is just as dead with the right choke and gun combo. You take steel, bismuth, and tss and shoot them all into ballistic gel at 20, 30, 40, 50 yards and the bismuth and tss will always penetrate further at all those ranges but all you need is for the majority of pellets to go 3-4 inches into the bird to reach vitals and most steel shot goes 5-7 inches deep into ballistics gel. But I’m the end all that matters is a good pattern at 20-35 yards and you will kill everything under 40 yards no problem no matter if your shoot steel, bismuth or tss.
@tomasblosser23512 жыл бұрын
This test is pointless. Different density peices of wood, different weight and size of wood, different sizes of shot. This is not an accurate representation of shotshell brand difference or bismuth vs steel vs tungsten. Its randomly shooting random shells at random peices of wood.
@jstreetgiant19702 жыл бұрын
Great to see the comparison, and I always watch whatever you post, but looking at a piece of wood doesn’t help much. Would you consider making your own ballistics gel and showing us the results from that? It’s stupid easy to make, and I’m sure you’d get loads of views.
