Yep. I make all my own drags. I’ve tried lots of different types and ideas. I’m still experimenting with them, but I’ve got a design made out of #4 rebar that works great so far. Good luck!

You know Dennis, I’m not sure if that would work or not… I trap coyotes in the sage brush, so I’m not sure if they would shy away from sawdust, or not. It wouldn’t be real natural to their normal smells, but then again it would be natural in a forest type setting. I definitely would try it for bobcats. I’m sure it would work great for that. As far as being freeze proof, I think you would have to do something with it to keep it from freezing once it got wet… It would be interesting to experiment with.

Thank you! That was the first time my nephews had gone on the desert trap line with me. It’s a time they probably won’t forget. That was my first ever broken chain. Without the snow we probably would not have found that cat.

My absolute favorite is Powder River from O’gorman. I use the powder river for both lure, and bait, even though technically I think it is sold as bait. My second favorite would be my homemade castor lure.

The trapping community as a whole is a pretty welcoming community as far as I know. I would contact the Idaho Trappers Ass. They would be able to point you in the right direction I’m sure for mentors. If you can’t find anything, then let me know I’ll make some calls, and see what I can find for you. My nephew traps in Riggins, and I can maybe get you set up with him. If nothing else come spend a weekend in Oregon with me, and I’ll help as much as I can.

The best place to start for me is to rimrocks, river beds, steep washes. I usually find scat trees and go from there. The benefit of a scat tree is you know they are in the area. You can usually find a set location by determining/guessing what direction they are traveling. Although I did catch two bobcats today in coyote sets, that were not scat trees. Stay tuned for my next bobcat video coming up. I will go over some ideas on this topic. Thanks for the comment!

Yes sir, definitely try it for bobcats. It has a lot of eye appeal for them, but the coyotes around here won’t come within 20’ of one of these sets. Thanks for the comment.

It might’ve been

I tried to pull him out the bottom and he got stuck in between the rocks. I pulled the trap off to try to get him up through the top crack, but it was too small for me to fit into. Mike then went down below, and I was on top with a stick, working together we dislodged him. I grabbed the phone, and went back down below to video him dragging him the rest of the way out. The whole story was pretty odd, but I have no reason to try to make anything up. Thanks for watching the video!
