I had two bowl blanks that were very nearly identical so I thought they would make good subjects to show both the Oneway Easy Core system and the McNaughton coring system in action under very similar circumstances. I broke the video down into two segments with a total run time of ~53 minutes.

Bob: Great video - easy to follow, informative and, yes, entertaining. I must admit there are several other tools ahead of a coring system on my wish list but I do enjoy seeing the process. Thank you for sharing ...

Thoroughly enjoyable and informative video Bob. The Oneway system seems, as you say, a very accurate method for coring, and how great that Black Walnut looks too. Onwward to the next video....... Cheers Mike

Hi Bob, I appreciate your time &consideration, especially the 3/4 HP not being adequate. I guess that ends my problem . Not enough power. Thanks again, Larry

I have the one way system that I use with my powermatic 3520B and I really like it and use it alot. Just cored 16 15" to 17" cherry blanks with same number of 1 0" to 12" blanks. Like your depth gauge

Hi, John: That piece is called a Morse Taper Extender and I bought it with the lathe from Oneway. I would expect they are a fairly standard item which would be available from machine tool supply places. This lathe has a #3 morse taper tailstock socket and came with a #3 morse taper live center. I did a search at their website and it appears that they only carry the extender in #3 morse taper. Take care Bob

Nice system, I like the way those Oneway systems are built. What do you coat the bowls with if you are going to use them for food stuff.

Wow, so much more complicated than the Woodcut bowl saver system. No wonder it's a lot cheaper.

+Larry Arnold Hi, Larry: I have never seen a Woodcut Bowlsaver in person nor used one, so I don't know how it compares to these two systems. Coring requires a considerable amount of torque from the lathe so I would recommend at least 1 1/2 hp. and preferably 2+ hp. I don't know of any midi lathes that have that much power available. I never tried coring anything on my 3/4 hp. GI Maxi lathe so I can't say whether it would have been possible or not. I simply assumed it would not have enough power and did my coring on my larger lathe. Take care Bob

Bob, I've been turning for 3 years but learning everything on my own (slowly ... ugh). Anyway, I have / love my Delta 46-460 and am interested in coring as in the video above. I don't believe I need the Oneway product as my lathe is a midi and to small to use but 2 of the 4 options. I believe the posts may seem bulky attached to my small bed as well. Question : Have you any recommendations of a smaller set that I could purchase ? LInk ? One other idea ........... is it possible to core thinner bowls to get 3 or 4 on my Midi lathe ? Maybe if the blanks were dried more thoroughly first ? Thanks so much for your generous consideration and very well made video, Steph_Louisiana

Hi, Donna: Oneway makes Easy Core systems for 16", 20" and 24" lathes so the 20" should work on the PM3520b. You would need to specify the gap between the bed ways to make sure you got the correct clamp block for the base plate. Take care Bob

Will a system like this work well on a glued up blank made from say 14x14 3/4 hard maple ? I read that the coring system is best used on semi wet wood. What do you think?

+Larry Arnold Hi, Larry: The Oneway Easy Core system is likely available through larger woodturning retailers, although I bought mine directly from Oneway: oneway.ca/products-category/coring-hollowing/Easy-Core%20Coring%20System The McNaughton Center Saver system is available from woodturning retailers as well. I bought mine at Lee Valley Tools, www.leevalley.com/en/Wood/page.aspx?p=49128&cat=1,330,49233,49232&ap=1 Take care Bob

My name is Billy Bouldin I am a wood Turner . I have watched several of your videos.I know you use to have a Nova DVR now I noticed you have a Oneway lathe. I was looking to upgrade for a better Automatic lathe with a verbal speed. I would like to know which lathe would be the best investment . Which do you think would be the best lathe . I would Appreciate your advise . thank you Blly.

Billy Bouldin Hi, Billy:I don't know how much advice I can give you since I only have direct experience with the four lathes I have owned: the Delta 46-700 I started out on, the Nova DVR, the General 25-114 midi lathe I use out in the backyard during nice weather, and the Oneway 2436 I use now. The Delta is no longer available and would not be too highly recommended even if it was. The Nova DVR is an excellent lathe but would fall in the class of "medium duty" lathe rather than "heavy duty" like the Oneway. One thing in particular that always kind of bothered me about the Nova is the bed is very narrow from front to back, with only ~1" of machined bed way surface on each side of the central gap. That is not a lot of contact surface for the banjo and tailstock to clamp on to and the banjo would occasionally vibrate loose, especially when I was coring. In general the heavier the lathe the better for absorbing vibration. The Nova only weighed ~200 lbs., even with the bed extension I had mounted. I did have ballast added to the stand it was mounted on and it worked well for me, but I felt I had outgrown its capabilities and wanted to make a significant upgrade to what would be the last lathe I would ever buy. That is why I chose the Oneway, which is built like a tank and performs extremely well. It also cost at least three times as much as the Nova.In the forums I participate in the Powermatic 3520b is generally considered to be very good value for money and probably the lowest priced of what could seriously be considered a "heavy duty" lathe. The Robust lathes are also building a reputation as being on a par with Oneway lathes and their cost is comparable with Oneway's.I hope this helps a littleTake careBob

I really appreciate you answering my questions. I have 1624 Nova and feel like I have out grown it. I am thinking about going to the 2436 Oneway .I don't like changing the belts . On mine I get at a certain spot and have to change. When I buy again I like to have the 3 hp Oneway . I have been turning for 2 years and I watched your videos among others and taught myself . I have learned a lot from watching you.I have turned some stuff and sold them and that is how I bought my lathe I have now. Next time I buy I want to get one and be it . Thank you so much Billy.
