Flash back to the flash Bob that started it all. Circa 2017, on Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, featuring 12 of my close friends who shamelessly volunteered to learn and perform the dance. These were the original Bobettes - far before "Bob's Dance Shop" was ever a thought.
The name "Bob" was inspired by a yellow Lions Club shirt that I found collecting dust at a vintage store in Sherman Oaks. One day, while wearing the shirt at work, a client turned to me and said: "Hello, Bob, what's your story?" I perked right up, and with a soft lisp and strong southern drawl I said: "My name is Bob - I'm recently gay, divorced and (by some miracle) in custody of my four kids." We both laughed. The truth was, I didn't know Bob but I was certainly intrigued. Two separate lives now sharing the same shirt. Who was the legend that wore this shirt before me? Without having any way of knowing, I decided to re-create the legend myself. Thus became "A Flash Mob Named Bob".
As time has gone on, I've come to understand Bob as more than just a human wearing a shirt. Bob is a vibration. A good energy that most would call the life of the party. Ordinarily extraordinary and fully expressed. He, she, they, them, you, me, it, us, now. Bob joins music, fashion and dance into a timeless, precious moment. An inclusive space without rules, judgement or shame. A place of forgiveness, acceptance and love that WE create for ourselves. I call it Bob's Dance Shop. 73 degrees with a nice breeze and good vibes only.
