Steam radiator air vent spitting water? A common problem in steam heating systems that are often caused by the opening and closing of the service valve feeding the radiator. The feed valves are there strictly to shut down a radiator in the event of an emergency or required maintenance of the radiator.
They're not designed to throttle down the steam entering the radiator and will ultimately trap condensate trying to get out. The result always ends up with the steam radiator air vent spitting water. This video was taken by homeowner Mike K. as I changed out a faulty convector radiator steam valve. Not a job for the D.I.Yer or faint of heart! I.M.H.O.
Make a note at the beginning of the video as the air vent is spitting water to the top of the convector box and the water drops to the floor. The result of someone shutting the radiator while it's filled with hot steam. They're service valves folks, and will not control the amount of heat you can get from a radiator. If you must shut off a radiator because you're too hot, shut them when they're cold!
Enjoy and Happy Plumbing!
