That's where Andy Cunningham's skill at puppeteering came in (not realising that they were puppets at the time), because as a ventriloquist he was average (he said in one interview for a book some years ago being told my someone backstage at a gala night he performed at that the audience were entertained by his ventriloquism act because he was so bad at it!) but he tried harder to make the puppets act more like real, independently-thinking characters than many other puppeteers do and did. I mean, Matthew Corbett/Sooty was awful in this respect! I too didn't realise that Badger was a puppet when I watched this as a kid, or if I did then i found it easy to suspend my disbelief. Even at that age I never found Sooty & Co. convincing at all! Also notice that whenever we see Badger on his arm and they are both talking, Badger only says a few words at a time - this was to try and hide his poor ventriloquism - after a few words from the puppet people would then look at Andy's mouth to see if his lips were moving, but by keeping Badger's speech in these bits short and simple, by the time people would look at Andy's lips, Badger would have stopped talking anyway!

I love how you can see Andy's arm so often. I always thought Badger had gone through the rigours of a formal acting education. Uncanny
