When the brake is applied, the shoe moves and presses the lining against the inside of the drum. The friction between lining and drum provides the . Energy is dissipated as heat. Modern cars have disc brakes all round, or discs at the front and drums at the rear

Quick bit of info. You can adjust the shoes with the hub in place on the pandas and 500’s by sticking the screwdriver through one of the wheel stud bolt holes. Just rotate the hub so you can see the adjuster through the bolt hole and flick the adjuster wheel with the screwdriver. This makes the adjustment easier because you keep the hub, and more importantly the shoes in one place and it removes the chances of slightly moving the shoe assembly every time you remove and put the hub back on, so your adjustment is quicker and accurate. Loosening the handbrake adjuster fully,before removing the drum, seems to reduce problems removing and refiting brake cable to shoe.Thanks, there are several tips I will adopt to make my life easier.

Excellent job as usual. I put masking tape on the shoe friction surfaces before installation before getting mucky/oily fingerprints all over them during fitment. And, of course, dont forget to peel it off before putting the drums back on!

Great video I did my daughters 107 rear brakes this week so quite therapeutic watching this, what a pita these drum brakes are, mind you not as bad as the damn v70 I had disc with drum and the worst sod of an adjustment ever, and the handbrake still felt crap after hours of tweaking when you put it on the car always kind of lurched forward or back an inch depending which way you were sloping. I’ll be shot down in flames but I actually find EPBs with discs and pads way the easiest to do. Loved the two fingered salute re tightness.

I did this job last Saturday on my wife's fiat 500. Identical. I wish I'd watched this beforehand. I found the hard way that the wheel cylinder bolts are not accessible. I also had the brake pipe fittings stuck on the pipe which didn't help. I need to pull the drum again to do the adjustment. I hoped it would just self adjust but it hasn't so far. (two days). I'll do the other side but will at least be knowing what to expect. I found your style very watchable and helpful. Oh yeah, nice tools. Mine are a right hodge podge. Mart.

Instead of twating the drum with a hammer and risk cracking it is easier to remove hub cap and bearing nut then remove outer bearing all while the wheel is still fitted and pull the full hub and drum in one lump.The wheel gives you a lot more leverage to ease the drum off over tight or contaminated brake shoes.

Would like to add if I could, I always back off the handbrake first, set the rear shoes up then adjust the handbrake last, quarentee good pedal and the handbrake will hold well

fantastic video y can't thay rivet them on like they did be for and not stuck on to the shoe what happens is the bricks got hot and the adhesive that holds the shoe s to the metal go brutal and then you get this problem not good

Have you found a brake cleaner that works better than any other one. Can you tell me why people says to chamfer the edges of the friction material when installing brake shoes.

Hard Worker it is done to allow the brake to bed in faster and sometimes it helps with setting up the brakes as well

Did you have a problem with bearing ring falling out of the hub when taking hub from the car. it happened to me on fiat puno mk2b(same hub and bearing) so I fitted new hubs, and wandering could i press bearing ring back to old hubs.

Another Panda question: If I have to brake hard at low speeds (10-20mph, just shy of an emergency stop) I feel and hear the back wheels lock up and slide. Is this acceptable for a '04 Panda? It has anti lock brakes, I don't feel it engage in the pedal. This happens in dry conditions with midrange allseason tyres. It just went through its MOT without problems. I greatly enjoy your channel, keep it up!

Hi mate what you're going to have to do is just to be safe because at the end of the day they are brakes you're going to have to look at the back brake shoes and make sure everything is ok strip them down make sure everything is ok they tend to go hard after a few years even though they look good doesn't mean they are good most probably going to end up having to replace everything on the back

@@asmodeus1755 anytime mate I'll be pretty certain they are the original brake shoes like I said they might look good just replace the brake shoes to brake cylinders and the brake fitting kit

Buy a little car they say, it will be easy to work on! I've 2 fiat's and they can be so frustrating to work on, you have to remove half the car to replace anything.

I thought they were self adjusters that find their place after the brake is pressed, they open out and the little spring plate stops it going back in.

@@bodgitandleggitgarage I had a Fiat Multipla and the brake lining came off one of the shoes, I know how it was caused, the handbrake is on the right of the driver and in the winter it can freeze on and I drove it back from work because I wanted to get home and the drum got very hot and the lining on one of the shoes came off about a week later when I took the drum off I could see that they had burnt. I have a Panda now and because it's been idle over the so called lock down the handbrake is not working on one side so I'll have to investigate and fix.

Why didn't you just have the drums turned? Every time i work on those silly drum systems, I have the drums turned (if they're in limits). It definitely would have made re-fitting much easier.

soonerlon I hear what you're saying and I agree but a couple of problems I don't have the machine to do it and there is not one around me it's miles away would put too much cost on the customer I wouldn't get the job if I did that but yes it is definitely easier and better to do it that way but you don't need to really if I had the Machine I would definitely do it

Or just get a new drum because they are cheap nowadays, for example one for my car, a 200 mm was only 20€, 180 mm was arround 15.

Common failures on these Fiats. Wheel cylinders start leaking with the fluid melting the glue on the shoes hence why the lining tends to come off. Happened to my previous Panda, found the same on me daughters Panda las weekend as well.

My posts keep disappearing for some wierd reason? I have a 54 plate Mk1 Octavia VRS with a knocking noise coming from the drivers front wheel area. Knocking gets faster or slower with speed, but, it disappears when I press the brake. Stopped altogether after I fitted a set of Pagid pads but after a few days it was back again. Any ideas? I'll post a link to the video again. Cheers pal.

don t want to hurt your feelings ore what not but: your drum NEEDS TO GO ON LOOSE OVER THE BRAKESCHOES,THAN USE THE HANDBRAKE TOO ADJUST IT!!!!!THE brakeschoes are adjusting themselfs EACH time you use the handbrake.....just think about it...if the adjusting system is not working than you CAN find out that your brake pedal needs 2 pomps in stead of 1 pomp to activate the rear brake(you need more brakeoil in the cylinder too COMPENSATE for the worn brakeliner)and because of this you get a difference between the left and right brake.the brake schoes does not touch the drum,it creats heat and drag....

MrRichard57000 no you are wrong self adjusters never work on hand brakes why do you think you have to adjust handbrake so the time think about it if they self adjusted and it worked properly you would never need to adjust them ever again this is not the case do your homework before you try and be clever and comment on someone's video

MrRichard57000 and not only that some handbrakes you can adjust from inside the shoe once the Hub is fitted why would they put this option in there if it's self adjusted like magic

You've obviously never heard of pads bedding in when they are a little bit snug as you move the Hub around it's just the corners of the new material this will wear down in no time cause no heating or no damage just another keyboard warrior who thinks they know what they are talking about
