Bodie Ghost Town in California is one of the BEST preserved mining towns from the late 1800s. Buildings are left in arrested decay and give the feel of an authentic town left frozen in time. If you're ever wanted to step back in time and feel the real old west, this is the place.

The ghost town of Bodie came into existence around 1859 as a result of the California Gold Rush. Four prospectors came to the area and discovered the valley shortly before a severe winter storm took the life of one, W.S. Bodey. It is because of him the town earned its namesake.
The mines produced several eras of gold production, the last prosperous era occurring around 1877 when an estimated 784 thousand dollars of gold and silver was pulled from a vein discovered after a collapse. Both investors and settlers flocked to the region to get in on the riches.
By 1878, the population soared to about 10,000 people, leading to what towns in the Old West are often known for - violence. The violence was so prolific that the term “Bad Men From Bodie” became a known term in the west.
During its lifespan, the town had electricity which was introduced in 1892. Buildings included 65 saloons, a jail, schoolhouse, red-light district, hotels, several churches of different denominations, and a railroad amongst others.
Unfortunately for the town, the lode of gold didn’t hold out and people left searching for the next profitable town. The Standard Company pulled out investments in 1914 and by the time of World War II, the town’s population reached zero.

Love visiting Bodie. I don't know if it is going on this year because of the world situation, but normally there is one day a month during the summer where you can check out Bodie at night. Its bone chilling cold and gives you a different look at the hard life the people who lived there must have had. Thanks for another great video.

@@CactusAtlas there is an old black and white video of Bodie, when 9 people were still living in Bodie. The Man, who interviews the people is talking to a women (Misses Bell). This women looks exactly like my grandmother! It is stunning. Sorry for my english, I am from Germany

Been there once and I loved it! Bodie Fun Fact: Only about five percent of the original buildings remain. (Only five percent!) Visitors can view over 100 remaining buildings. Amazing!

I can’t wait to go back! I left so much unexplored and underestimated how much there is to see, but amazing to think that it’s a fraction of what was once there.

Amazing conditions of this town. I even think I saw an old rocking chair in the first house he visited that I had from my grandmothers house. It really gives you an idea of what a old town would look and feel like. Super neat place. The windows are interesting to as they appear to be old glass. Seems to have been a thriving town at one time too. Great info on it and You always wonder about these old towns and their history.

Exactly! Usually ghost towns are in complete shambles, a few bricks here or there or completely rebuilt and staged to appear "in the time" but never has one elicited the feel of being there.

Well done video, so glad you were able to finally get there. I've visited three times and still want to go back to see more. Nice to see the green grass and clouds! I've been in the summer and it is so hot. So cool to look in the windows and see that moment in time, what was left, date on the calendar, items for sale. Hope this video inspires others to venture out to check it out. How was that bumpy road in? LOL that is the only thing I didn't like about going here.

Were these buildings completely untouched from history or have they made some restorations/preservations at some point? Like I was expecting broken glasses out from those windows
@CactusAtlas
@CactusAtlas 2 жыл бұрын
They do preservation, yes, with the goal or slowing the decay. As for restorations... that we cannot neither confirm nor deny as we simply aren't sure. The park does claim that it has not restored any of the buildings and there's many articles out there about it. But yeah... the window panes being so immaculate and unbroken is curious, isn't it?
