3:37 Only problem with this setup is you wouldn't want to use Alkalines since the chances of them leaking increases. Also, you could however put a high wattage Halogen bulb in it. Would get very hot though so you'd need to change out a few parts.

Is it just me or does the Incandescent have more throw? Of course, the LED upgrade is better, but it looks like the trade off is you lose throw with LED since the CRI is lower.

After finding fresh Eveready D-cells alkaline that claim to have a 10 year shelf life I decided to put my Maglites back into service after around 10 years of using those single AA LEDs that sell for around $5-10. I ordered from Matt two (2) Firefly 280 lumen direct screw-on upgrades and the Firefly 800 lumen drop-in. I also got his single cell extender for my D-3 to make it a D-4 since D-cell batteries are sold in packages of even numbers. I have two D-3's one is thicker than the other the extender fits flush on the thinner one with a prifix of "D3" proceeded by 9 digits total of 11 digit serial number. The thicker one has no "D" prefix in the 8 digit serial number, it does screw-on and is flush on the inside but the outside is noticeably not flush. The Firefly 280 screw-on has an approximate run time of 15 hours on 4 D-cells. It is way brighter about twice as bright as the original. The Maglite incandescent exnon bulb run-time on 4-D cells is approximately 4 hours with 105 lumens output on fresh batteries, lumens drop as batteries weaken. The Firefly LED's dim less as batteries weaken. This screw-on upgrade is more than enough light that would be practically needed in a flash light, and is uncomfortable if shined at eyes. When adjusting spot -to- flood a dark spot forms in the center, the same as with the original bulb. I placed a spare Firefly 280 in the tail-cap, it fits just as well as the original spare bulb behind the spring. All these run-time estimates are not "continuous" run-times, continuous running will drain batteries faster, and could present overheating issues. A realistic run-time would be about half of these high estimates. When batteries die off running LEDs the light is still somewhat bright and just shuts off. When it is off for a while alkaline batteries can rejuvenate enough to light up the LED again only intermittently. Banging it around could cause it to light up again momentarily, but does not work as well as cleaning all the connections and replacing the batteries... The Firefly 800 drop-in has 3 ideal modes; High 100%, Medium 30%, and Low 5%, powered with 4 D-cells approximate run-times are H 5, M 90, L 400 hours. Would be even better to have another setting of something around 10-15% along with strobe. The focus is fixed to a hot spot with large bright spill. there is no spot -to- flood adjusting. Low mode is comfortable to the eye and is plenty of light to see your way around in the dark. Low is not as bright as the original bulb with fresh batteries but it will outshine incandescent bulbs as those batteries will weaken in a sort period of time. Low is a great battery conservation mode. Medium is close to the 280 bulb just ever so slightly less bright, but much brighter than the exnon incandescent, also uncomfortable when shined at the eye. High mode is for showing-off, it really lights up a large area and is most uncomfortable when shined in the eyes. High will drain the batteries the quickest so High should be used sparingly. If you shine these Firefly LED bulbs in anyone's eyes they will hate you, it's just rude to do so. If you are in a confrontational situation it could give you a situational advantage over some aggressive attackers. What I now have are two D-4 LED Maglites with options the screw-on 280 Firefly gives me the ability to carry a spare just like the original configuration. I just do not trust any claim that LEDs have amazingly long expected run life, I have been disappointed with most of them. The Drop-in 800 Firefly really is the better option as long as it works as no spare drop-in can be configured inside the Maglite. While LEDs have no filament to burn out, the drivers behind the LED fail to sustain the diode emitting light. The test of time takes time, for me so many LEDs have failed their advertised running life. 10 years of modest use is what I am expecting, 5 years or less would be another disappointment... I compared the Firefly 800 lumens with 4 fresh D-cells to my 2,000,000 candlepower 12 volt spotlight with a 55 watt halogen type bulb. This spotlight had a rechargeable lead battery that did not last a year. I modified it by taking out the battery and wiring a 6' foot cord that plugs into the cigarette lighter. It shines with plenty of juice from a running car, I can use it out of the window or I can stand next to the window to have a better 360 degree angle. It takes 12.57 lumens to equal 1 candlepower so this spotlight claims to be 25,140,000 lumens. It is bright but not no 25M+ lumen bright. So the 800 lumen Firefly is 63.6 candlepower. The 10 year old 12 volt 55 watt halogen bulb did outshine the new 6 volt Firefly LED 800 lumen but not by no millions of lumens. It might of beat it by maybe something like 400 lumens... also found a glass 50mm aspheric lens for Maglite D size for $3.78 free shipping from Hong Kong. I will update this comment when it arrives and tell how it all fits and focuses... www.dx.com/p/50mm-optical-glass-lens-for-flashlight-spot-light-2008380#.XQ2OXIhKiUk Still waiting for the Hong Kong lenses but I found and got a glass 50mm aspheric form a Stateside source. If the Hong Kong lenses work as well as the one I now have, I might order 2 dozen more. These lenses do little that would benefit the beam of drop-in upgrades Firefly 800 lumen that have a fixed focus. It does provide more throw but the spill changed to many dim rings kind of like the rings of Saturn. I do not recommend use, maybe improvements with an engineered bezel that could move the lens back an forth. The aspheric lens does provide massive noticeable improvements with the screw-on up-grade that allow the spot -to- flood function, I used with the Firefly 280 lumen. The 50mm lens fit is ok, 51mm would fit better 52mm might be just right or too tight. These lenses are glass, so better to be looser than tighter because of expansion and contraction cracking threats. The focus to spot gets tight, near crisp to a square LED shape with little to no spill. A smaller intense spot than with the flat lens and brighter with more throw than the 800 lumen Firefly drop-in. When adjusting to flood the center remains a bright spot, there is no dark spot forming a doughnut shaped light as with a flat lens. The flood looks like a large spot with less throw, and little to no spill. More than doubling the light intensity, I highly recommend for the serious flashlight aficionado. Modifications are needed to have it all tricked out. The lens does need to be centered before tightening. The closer the bulb is to the lens the larger the flood area will be. I filed a small amount off of the cam's "short" end of the reflector to allow the bulb to spring closer to the lens when dialed in that direction. The bezel needs a thin flat rubber washer or thicker o-ring to form a better seal. Even better replace the bezel with one that has a 1" inch deep hood to protect the protruding lens. The many weaponized crown bezels I found are not deep enough to protect the protruding lens and do nothing to control spill. I have failed at this point to locate a decent hooded bezel for Maglite aspheric lens upgrades. All searches result in 10 year old discontinued bezels for aspheric lenses. Camera hoods wont fit correctly. An engineered bezel with aspheric lens kit is needed for the best fit and function. Extend the bezel hood about an 1" inch from lens base to protrude 1/4" beyond the lens apex, with a flare of 2 1/4" inches measured from the inside edge. Size, Pitch and Major/Minor diameter D cell bezel TPI 20 or Metric 1.25 for the thread pitch. some have said 1.25 is a better fit. Maj 2.116" Min 2.080" Thread length .225" O-ring recess .375" My other D3 has dried out rubber parts, it's the thick tube so no cell extender will work well. Still looking great for over 20 years old, thinking of up-grading with the 2,000 lumen drop-in. Powering it with two (2) 26650 KeepPower 5200mAh wired in parallel instead of stacking in series. Plenty of room in the tube for wiring a slide-in insert in parallel to give it a stronger longer run-time, looking at achieving something over 10 hours in 25% mode. Then I will need to get a job as a Georgia prison guard so I can chase escapees through swamp all night long. Just stick some reflector tape on the tail of the Bluetick hounds... As I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for the Lord is with me; my rod is my Maglite, it comforts me.

It took 3 weeks to get the 50mm aspheric lenses from "Deals Extreme" located in Hong Kong $3.78 each free shipping. I ordered 2 they both are 50mm in diameter but the height is not the same. They sent me one about 19mm in height and the other is about 22mm in height, height measurements are not specified in the add. Both are very clear bright glass, The 22mm focused just fine to a square LED shape near crisp. The smaller 19mm needs more travel to focus I had to just about unscrew the head to achieve the LED square shape and it made rings like the planet Saturn. So I learned the more height in the apex the better focus. I can't recommend Deals Extreme's 50mm lens as the height is not consistent to get the best focus. However I found a better fitting 52mm aspheric lens Height 24.8mm with a small focal length of 26mm, from China. When I get them I will leave comment on the fit and focus, in about 3 weeks or so...
@ioccatonyz1
@ioccatonyz1 5 жыл бұрын
They came well packaged, 2 per box, 17 days. I just got done comparing with the 50mm's focus and throw outside, Midnight here. The focus is better than the 50mm, the throw is about the same but I will have to say better but not by much. The fit is not perfect it does seat all the way and is centered with no giggle. The 50mm requires centering and there is giggle room. As you will see from the picture in their add, these lenses have a lip edge and that is what I would expect to mate with the O-ring. It does not mate up, the dome of the lens meets with the inside edge of the bezel. It also stops the bezel from screwing all the way on. I will file the inside edge of the bezel so it screws on all the way. It does thread a few times but not all the way. Yes, the 52mm diameter 24.8mm in height is a better aspheric lens but will need modifications to the bezel for better fit. I did one more mod on mine not all need this mine did. The closer the bulb is to the lens the larger the flood area will be. If the reflector springs up when you unscrew the bezel then; File a small amount off of the cam's "short" end of the reflector to allow the bulb to come closer to the lens when dialed in that direction. If the reflector is sitting flush with no popping up, then it's as close as it is going to be. I also found a 2" inch rubber coupling used in plumbing, slip thight on the head to act as a protective hood as the glass apex will protrude and could break if bumped on something. It does look "cool" to have it exposed... This is the link to the lenses I have; www.aliexpress.com/item/32788343610.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.481b4c4dcOuEfI When compared to the flat lens they are a great improvement. Get a few of them you and your friends will be impressed. I did ask the seller for discounts on orders of 100, I might get one or two dozen more. I need to reengineer the bazel with a deep hood to sell them as a upgrade set. I have seen ads here in the states selling similar lenses for $50. to over $100. Remember the screw-on XP-G2 LEDs with these lens really concentrate the light and hurts the eyes much more. So I treat these flashlights like firearms alway be aware of what you are pointing them at. As other people will hate it if shined at their eyes... As I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for the Lord is with me; my rod is my Maglite, it comforts me.

@@1malikalik your welcome, these upgrades are fun. One other thing I did to my maglites is to dust the reflector with glow powder. It glows when you turn it off looking radioactive “sort of”. The stuff I used is called “Lit glow pigment” got it from ebay. It’s comes in a small jar and is not cheap. A thin dusting is all that is needed, so hundreds of flashlight dusting from one jar. I used a thin coat of linseed oil on the lens. Sprinkle the powder on evenly, sake out the excess. Thick coats are a waist of powder, only the top layer will actually glow… That “Lit” really glows enough to see in a dark room. The Green is much brighter than the blue. Have fun My bests Tony

The incandescent bulb models all also use those really long/tall bulbs and can stand up on their heads so you can use them as candles and read a book or write a paper without having to hold the flashlight up And modern led mag lights can last for days or weeks on a single set of batteries. Hey Matt , I’m trying to repair a maglite, can you please help ? It is an led flash lite but I can not find a bulb like this any where on line . The switch is not as tall as an incandescent switch and it does not have a threaded bezel on top . Looking down into the bulb there are the numbers 483 , I have to take the little brass screw out on the side of the switch to get the bulb out . Can you suggest a fix for me please ?

Sounds like it was already upgraded with a drop-in from elsewhere. So the reflective cone is gone. To get it working again, it needs a new drop-in. If that drop-in is the only issue…

So, did u test above 3 cells? Can I get another 200+ lumens from the 6 cell?..PS. I bought a 600+ 3C LED Maglite, reduced to rock bottom during the holidays, for $10. So how about an upgrade that compares to that? Not trying to be a D. Just sayin'.

Maglight got left in the dust. They better get their act together or they won’t sell any flashlights.Plus last time I checked the led upgrade in a canister per say was $20 for one. Heck I can get several flashlights that blow the mag upgrade away. Forget the old style. They are a thing of the past to look back on in 20 years sitting on the old flashlight shelf. They need to come out with a bad ass led head replacement for them that screws right on.

Jim P I understand. I have several myself up to the 6 D cell size. But that won’t touch several flashlights I have now. I have the GT Mini BY LUMINTOP that blows any Mag light away easily with 1 18650 3.7volt battery. I also have his daddy the 32000 lumin BLF Giga Thrower by Lumintop. The brightness flashlight in the world. People will drop off Mags if they don’t step up. Why wouldn’t they. Leds wsy way brighter & way way less batteries that you need.

@@jwppowers Ok what the hell did you smoke. First I never said mag lite was obsolete. You should understand what you read it would save all us time. Now I waste my time with you. But the time you spent explaining the 100 uses of a mag lite was common sense to us. Other words we didn’t need your explanation of how to use a mag lite. By the sheer length & attention to detail with the spacing & such made it easy to see the part you left out but like the most Im sure. Anyway You left out the main reason you like the mag lite. I’m sure that you can take all the 3D mag lite but the 4D is your favorite. Well mag lite is happy to have a customer with such great knowledge of their products & if they’re a true American company then they may frown on what you have done with their flashlights. Maybe they won’t see this & give you a free mag lite. Whatever you do with your mag lite is your business & I am concerned that you can get hurt trying to take the 4D cell mag lite all the way to the up the butt on high beam wide mode.oops🖕the button to the button then some. I probably have more mag lites than you do. They still ain’t as bright as a flashlight smaller than 2 D batteries high & overall size. Not even close. GT Mini GT Micro & the newest is the GT Nano. Affordable flashlights that smoke a mag lite. If it’s American then make it the Best.

I'm always blown away by how quickly we went from thinking Maglights were the best thing to have to now they're the worst thing in the flashlight market. Streamlights are still crap to me just bc they're dick is in the wind if they think I'm paying that kinda money for just a name. Maglight should've been on their A game when the LED market was still a novel product. Fine example of how big brand names die bc they refuse to get with the times. And here we are almost 20 years into the LED time period and Maglight STILL doesn't offer an awesome 18650 flashlight. They've got to be dying such a slow and agonizing death.

@@stoopidhaters you are not wrong about the modding!! There's an entire cottage industry dedicated to modding MagLite's. To which I have spent some descent hard earned dollars on. We can both agree that we love MagLite, but am I wrong to think that MagLite missed the boat by decades (and I still believe they're missing that boat) when it came to LED tech??? They should've been the company that introduced the world to how crazy the technology gap is between LED's and incandescents. That is, when you're buying actual quality LED torches and not that impulse junk they sell in the check out aisle. The honest reason why I am so critical towards MagLite and their total lack of foresight and their ineptitude to get off their asses and actually design something that makes ppl say "shit!! I GOTTA have that!!" is all based on my love for the brand and the fact that I wanna see it around for many more years to come. I am literally surprised every time I walk in to a sporting section of the big box places and see actual MagLite products still for sale. They are dying. Slowly and for absolutely no reason. The flashlight design has literally not changed since God knows when. Maybe the tech has, but they're still so far behind in design and potential that other companies that shouldn't even be in the market are whooping their ass. And I'm not okay with that. I expect more from MagLite! Well, I USED to expect more from MagLite, but they just can't accept that they're blowing it!! Maybe I'm just expecting too much from the company that used to be the Juggernaut that we all believed could never be topped? It just feels like there is some old grumpy fart that's become irrelevant, but still calls the shots, that absolutely refuses to get with the current program of technology and advancements we've seen in the flashlight market. Am I making any sense or am I just speaking outta my ass? I've held this grudge against whoever is in charge over there for so long that I get lost in the weeds.

Those add on or up grades are embarrassing. What good are they if the light isn’t bright as the competition. I’ve out the $20 led in & it’s brighter. But like he says 110 lumens is bright compared to a Factory Mag Lite. 110 lumens is a joke people. The GT mini no Micro will blow away a 6D cell 20lb mag light you hit yourself in the head with just shining it around. Mag wouldn’t want to see this video. He won’t shine any other flashlight with the mag lite. Especially no GT Mini. Why don’t mag fix the bulb coverage. The giant black hole no light shines on when you twist the head is creepy. Hell a Grizzly could run through it & you’d never see him coming. “Come On Mag Lite” Step up.

Because these lights last like 20+ hours to a _month_ on a single set of cells. D cells are a much bigger physical volume of battery life than a tiny AAA. Also, the modern maglites =/= the 1980 version you found in a drawer. They use 700+ lumen LEDs now and the incandescent versions use xenon modules now(all of the Amazon aftermarket mods are actually inferior to just getting a new maglite which would come with a brighter LED than the hundreds of cheap offbrand ones on Amazon)

About as useful as a spoiler on a rowboat. Maglite just needs to realize they died at least five years ago and just lay down. Every one of their products, even modified, can be exceeded by a multitude of EDC lights that fit in a pocket. They only accell at one thing: being a club. Their light output, then, becomes irrelevant.
