Hey everyone! Hope you all enjoy this analysis of Ricky Martin. Here are a few additional thoughts to address some great comments and questions 1) it is entirely possible that he had some Botox injections before going on Ellen and the lack of movement is due to that. Botox usually causes even more stiffness than that, there is SOME movement there but it’s possible that Botox has a role to play. I still think his eyebrows do the Atari gesture when he’s emotionally invested though. Because Ellen isn’t the only time they didn’t do it much. 2) some of you brought up a language barrier. It’s a great point. Sometimes when someone is speaking in a language other than their first language we see no gestures as they struggle to find the right words. Pauses are also common in a scenario like this. Now Ricky Martin is certainly fluent enough in English for absolute comfort and ease when he speaks but there may be certain things he says better in Spanish so some of these behaviors can 100% be caused by that 3) the reason it’s hard to figure out if he did what he was accused of or not is because he never directly accused the claims except when he called them “nonesense.” This avoidance is not in and of itself incriminating. This video isn’t about the claims it’s about the lawsuit being dropped. Nobody is asking him a question. I would love for someone to ask him “is there any truth to your nephews claims” and see how he reacts to that. But without an interrogation or interview. On a planned statement we can’t get much about the validity of the accusations. Just the emotions around the subject

There is a micro tell in Ricky’s shaking of his head in The Voice clip where he is listing off different styles vs the shaking of the head no when he says he’s going to tell the truth in the Access Hollywood video. To explain it to you it’s like the micro difference between discuss vs. contempt. There is a micro distinction between the two different movements which is created by the nonverbal intention of listing & checking off items, like swipe right with your head (micro tilt to upper left then right) vs the classic tell of not telling the truth which is the classic lateral movement from left to right. I remember how Barbara W used Ricky’s hidden sexuality for increased ratings and it made me sick that she would do that and that Rickey’s manager would allow that. I am equally disgusted that Ricky’s classic tell shows he did not tell the truth about the accusations.

The eyebrow thing (in the other videos) is what I've always thought of as the "Heeeeeeey girrrrrrrrrl" eyebrows and it automatically puts me on edge. In my experience, guys (and some woman) who think they're hot do that a lot. It's hard to explain but it's like they are putting on a show of being this sexy, sensitive, emotional guy. I think the automatic "sad" eyebrows just becomes part of the act. I don't know anything about Ricky Martin as a person... and this is probably why. I can't stand that kind of thing and avoid anyone that puts on that sort of persona. It physically makes me ill. I know this could keep me from being unbiased in this sort of situation, but it's a red flag for me. Interestingly, his demeanor looks totally different to me in this latest video. Not making any judgement as to him being innocent or not, but he definately is not trying to look sexy here... which one would expect in this situation, regardless of whether he's innocent or not, but for different reasons. But anyway, the "sadness" here looks more genuine to me. At the very least he looks emotionally exhausted. Along these lines, I would think that if he were guilty, he would look more gleeful and energized that he got away with something. To someone accused of something they didn't do and by someone that maybe they really cared about at one point, I could see them being glad it's over but just emotionally exhausted...not energized. Of course, this is all said in my very humble, untrained, and probably very biased opinion. Thanks for the new content. Many good pointers to digest!

I want to add a tiny something. English is my second language and while I no longer need to translate in my head, it to me looks like he translates in his head still when speaking English especially with the bigger words or less common words. Several times it was like I could see him speak to himself in Spanish and quick search for the translation word he wants to say and I think that adds to how animated he looks or the pauses he takes because the brain is working so hard at juggling languages that conveying emotion can fall behind.

After age 50, I promise I search for words in every language including my native language. I learned German in 5th grade. At times, I can find the word in German, but not English. The fact that you use not only your knowledge, but that of those highly esteemed in this area is a credit to why you're so successful. As someone who has had family members spread some vicious and hurtful lies about me, I can say with confidence that it is absolutely possible to wish someone well and, at the same time, to be very angry at them and the things they've put you through. Also, the pain of betrayal from family can bring up feelings of shame that were instilled in you from being raised in a toxic or dysfunctional family system, even if you haven't actually done anything to be ashamed of.

First thoughts - part 1 he seemed guarded to me. he honestly looked so sad during part 2, and most of part 3. At the very end of the video when he says “I hope he doesn’t hurt anybody else”, I noticed a facial expression that to me, showed a general “what the ever living fuck,” which gives me the vibe he’s still so confused/bewildered by the situation.

He’s confused/bewildered/hurt bc he was stalking his own nephew who he was in a sexual relationship with, the nephew wanted out, and lil Ricky here couldn’t accept that and kept pushing the nephew (who later filed a restraining order to keep this predator away). THAT’S what he’s mad about.

I also wanted to comment on psychological distancing. Many years ago, I worked as a corrections officer in a maximum security prison. I noticed, even back then, that when an inmate spoke about their crimes, they never, EVER said, "...and then I killed him/her/them." It was always, "...and then, they died." I found this incredibly interesting and it wasn't until I started my graduate degree in psychology that I realized what this was. Super interesting behavior. Thanks Spidey!

What a joy to see you again and with such a complete and profound analysis. 👏👏👏 I like a lot David's 3rd theory "lingering or leading gesture", because it happens to me sometimes, when I notice I'm doing a leading gesture 😂. Then I realize the result is weird, the gesture matched the next sentence, nor the actual one, so, sometimes I explain "my gesture is because I'm thinking this and this". And I explain it because I am very aware of the contradictory message that my gestures and words can send. Also I noticed, just at the beginning of the video, with the left thumb he is massaging his right one, in a comforting gesture, just like telling himself "it's ok, it's fine, you can do this" or "it's ok if you feel what you are feeling". Thanks a lot, as always, Spidey.

Haha great catch on the “pacifying” right in the beginning. He’s actually doing it the exact same way on the Barbara Walters interview. I think he was holding back most of his emotions and reading a script. His hands kinda showed him trying to cage those emotions in a way. He was being reserved for himself. I think I believe he didn't do those awful things but he definitely did not wish his accuser the best. Disgust was definitely how I describe the way he reacted to the LAW and BEST comments he was supposed to say. I don't think those two will be speaking to each other again. That distancing from his nephew may be in every sense of the word. I don't know if the nephew did it for money or attention or even anger towards his uncle but he destroyed family relations after that.

I didn't understand anything from the video, I'm Brazilian, I speak Portuguese, I'll go through the English translator what I'm saying! Before I knew what was going on! I know Ricky Martin, he's a great father, he has a foundation in Puerto Rico that helps children and helps fight human trafficking and I read the book: Me,. In portuguese Eu , in english : Me And I know that Ricky Martin is a good person and I would never do any of the things I was accused of. When I heard about this news, 3 days before the 21/7th, I thought: It can't be, it's fake, I'll research it! I searched until I got to Ricky Martin's official Facebook page and saw that he was indeed being accused and that the accusations were false! I just said in the comment: Ricky, we are with you, go ahead, may God protect you! I wrote .in Portuguese (Ricky Martin can speak Portuguese) So I prayed for him, and the next day I got the good news, that the complaint was withdrawn and then I watched the video, in English with subtitles and then in Spanish, which I understand a little bit!! In the video in Spanish I noticed his emotions more! When he said he was going to find the pqz, the light, as he always did, he even smiled and then had a look of sadness, it looked like he was holding back not to cry! And he thanked the fans for the positive messages, in Spanish I saw emotion in what he said: Hay uno Dios that rewards those who focus and live there verdad (there is a God who rewards those who live the truth) And that's it ! And Ricki's fans believe in him, I believe in him, because he has a good heart!

The "no" head gesture and the affirmation "I wish him the best" feels natural to me. What he thinks and feels could be more along the lines of "I don't wish him harm" which is consistent with the head gesture. Good to have you back, Spidey. I’ve been a Ricky fan my entire life and when I saw those allegations, I was stunned. When I saw the video he posted, I felt so bad for him (and I was also like OOF, he is not himself). I think he’s incredibly hurt by what’s happened. On top of that I think, given the way he kept visibly restraining himself, that more than anything, he is absolutely furious but is trying his hardest not to show his anger. When he said “I wish him the best”, I saw his mouth pull back into a snarl. It’s sad to see him that way. Ricky is a kind person and this is a crappy position to be in.

Hey everyone! I was reading on the language issue and I had to find the video in Spanish. In that clip I can see how he is really hurt and he is definitely expressing his emotions in a very different level. I think the English video he is not as expressive, and as Spidey said, it may be, somewhat, rehearsed. Not because he cannot speak English well, which he does. It is just because your feelings are better expressed in your own language. My primary language is Spanish, I have been here for a while now, and I don’t really need to go in my head to translate a word or what I want to say any more. In fact, I can think in English as easily as in Spanish. However, when I’m very emotional I can show , or rather, my feelings are shown much clearly when I communicate them in Spanish. Something else that is not said in the English clip is that this person is suffering from mental issues. Which may me think of the way he said that he which him the best. I feel that his “no, head movement” is like he thinking “ I can’t believe it, or I’m not sure if he will be well some day”, something like that. In the Spanish version of this clip it’s very clear that he is really devastated and hurt by this situation.

He definitely seems genuine. You can tell his mind is juggling languages. He seems like he is still in shock by these allegations so his hand gestures are off from his words. Take into account that he is Puerto Rican (aka Boricua) thus more likely to be VERY physically expressive. Additionally, I think he still practices Buddhism and the tendency would be to extend wishes of “loving kindness” even to those that have caused damage. So, if still angry, verbalizing good wishes would be something to do to help yourself out of angst.

I have a question I think is potentially interesting. I grew up in an abusive household, where it is essentially, lie to survive, otherwise you'd be beaten for the most miniscule thing(your bed not being perfectly made). So I tried the negative head shaking, whilst saying something that is true, and vica versa, and it was honestly simple to do it. So I'm curious, is it harder to read people, who have a background that encourages them to lie, or is it that you just have to read a different baseline?

@@suepedie1 That's a good point. The law… Law 54 on the island is punitive and does not require police report or investigation. Because of the many cases of incest and rape on the island, the law was put in effect a few years ago allowing the victim to have a hearing with a judge to file the restraining order. The media immediately speculated that Ricky was guilty and the homophobia coming from journalists was vicious. Ricky knows his audience. He was wooden and factual in the video. He knew that even a tiny statement would be ripped apart. I appreciate your analysis. Glad to see you’re back! Yes. There is much to learn about these microscopic gestures and what they mean.

Using a script is essentially REQUIRED of celebrities when making a public statement on a very serious topic. He isn't going to just "wing" ANY part of his public statement. Being scripted IS to be expected. Don't hold that against him. Do not forget, Ricky Martin has a large extended family in Puerto Rico. THIS FACT impacts how he chooses to handle what is essentially a horrible "family" situation that has legal implications - and that went public. He has no desire to bash a younger family member (that reportedly has mental health challenges). Ricky Martin is being especially gentle in his words because this kid is part of his FAMILY. Don't forget the cultural differences when it comes to family. Ricky has many other family members.

About the "I wish him the best" part. I think it's an inner conflict because this was a person who he actually loved and never expected something like this from and when he's saying "I wish him the best", those memories or emotions are coming up and it's an inner conflict because at some point, he did love that person as a part of his family but now that they've accused him of something horrible, he's still having a hard time coming to terms with such conflicting emotions of there once being love and now just pain and betrayal. Once again, I'm trying to put myself in a similar spot and if someone I truly cared for hurt me like that, I would just retreat and I'd be dejected, hence the sideways head shake, and won't wish the same kind of pain on them because despite being hurt by them, they were still a loved one and I wouldn't want people I loved to go through such immense pain. Especially when the pain and hurt is fresh. A few years down the road changes things.

I give a greater allowance for speech when someone is not speaking in their native language. Even when someone is fluent in a language, and it’s even more true in stressful situations, and even more so when you’re over 50, sometimes we have to search for words. It just happens. His cadence and word searching are quite reasonable in this situation. I can see how others might misconstrue it as deceptive, but it simply does not read that way to me. I think he left his nephew’s name out for 2 reasons. First, you do what you can to protect anonymity whenever possible. While we all know the accusation came from a nephew, I don’t know his name or his parents name. I’ve only heard him referred to as nephew. That’s as it should be for victims. Second, there remains a likelihood he was abused by someone and he’s named the wrong person because it has fewer repercussions than the actual perpetrator. This is very common in childhood SA victims. They continue finding themselves in abusive relationships until they face the truth and process their history with a trained professional who specializes in this kind of abuse. It’s so much more complicated than any non victim could imagine. This is another reason I understand how people could choose not to believe Ricky Martin. Those who have been victims will understand how child has to process something so vile and personal that it’s easier for their own survival to lay the blame on someone no longer in their day to day life. It happens. I found him believable, but we have a limited context here. It’s not a full legal interview. There’s no longer an investigation. I do believe the police wouldn’t just walk away if they had any evidence to further an investigation without the nephew’s statement. Regarding the interview with Barbara Walters, at the time, he was touring with an up and coming Jessica Simpson. When you sit the two of them together, you have a perfect Barbie and Ken picture. I believe HE was ready to come out, but the record company and your promoters would not allow it. That’s why you see him really fighting to keep his truth to himself. When he refuses to define his sexuality, I believe the statement had words to the effect, “I’m not ready at this time to disclose or discuss it.” If HE was the one trying to hide it, I think we would have gotten a very strong, possibly angry denial. That’s not what happened.

I think your last point is really great! Not to mention even as a solo artist soooo many of his songs were about, or to a woman. “La Vids Loca” “Maria” and “she bangs” are all about women. “Nobody wants to be lonely” is sang with and to Christina Aguilera. He had this Latin lover image that sold well. Him hiding his sexuality was absolutely a career play.

In situations where you know the person very well, as in a nephew who he may have watched grow up, and is also aware of the sadness that this has caused within the family, can cause an emotional conflict. This is especially hard when you may know the difficulties a person has, so you feel sorry, but you can't get past your rage over what he's done to you. Its like this may be a person he's helped out over time and then to have this person come and stab him in the back, its mind boggling. He can't figure it out. So he goes back and forth, feeling sorry for his nephew and at the same time feeling outraged.

Thanks for this opportunity, Spidey! It’s helpful to have such a short clip, especially since you’ve broken it down into themed segments for us. This is my first attempt at body language/behavior analysis, after watching The Behavior Panel for about a year, and you starting with Depp/Heard. Here goes! PART ONE 1. His eyebrows are incredibly active! Lots of “requests for approval”; I feel like he wants to connect with the viewer. 2. His voice and cadence are steady, with corresponding hand/arm punctuating gestures. 3. I was intrigued by his pause and repetition of “the law.” I have no idea what he was thinking then. Maybe he wanted to say something else? Very interesting. PART TWO 1. His tone shifts markedly here: his pitch is deeper. 2. His eyebrows are very different here. His words are about injury; his eyebrows seem to be trying to communicate concern; but somehow he seems angry to me, as the fundamental emotion. PART THREE 1. His expressive eyebrows are back, though not the same as in Part One, somehow. 2. His tone is also more like in Part One. 3. His cadence is more halting, like he’s choosing his words carefully. 4. I think he sincerely hopes his accuser gets help and goes off to his own life where RM won’t have to deal with him ever again. However, I don’t think RM actually wishes the accuser love and happiness. Again, he seems angry, fundamentally. This was fun! Thanks again! 💐

Good details there! I actually believe him, but I also believe this nephew and possibly other kids have been victims of SA within the family. His hurt and anger could lie in the fact he and his husband have kids who could have been taken away from them because of this. When someone has grown away with this particular crime, you frequently see more anger in their denial. Gross accusations thrown at the victim(s), and viable arrogance from knowing they’ve grown away with it.

I felt he was pretty on guard about what he was going to say. Part 1 was just a plain statement about the law, and he seemed calmer. He seemed like he wanted to say much more but held back in p2, he seemed like he was pretty upset about the situation but tried to remain positive and neutral. In p3 I saw that even more, as if he doesn't really "wish the best" but he says it to just maintain a public image. Overall, this felt very scripted, and I can't fault him for that. I'd do the same if I was a celeb.

So happy to see you, Spidey❣️ Worth the wait. This was great. Just a little atta boy. I noticed your enunciation is so nice to hear. So often I can't watch videos because the speaker swallows syllables, mumbles, or flattens Ts. I'm not talking about accents or dialects. Obviously everyone sounds like the community they grew up in but if you're going to speak a language, I think you should speak that language clearly and thoughtfully. I appreciate you so much 🤗

In regards to the Walter's questioning, I think he eye blocks to hold back from telling her how rude she was being by continuing to talk. I think Walter's felt she could bully him passive/aggressively into him coming out. I would recoil against someone like that too. I disagree that it was a "I don't want you face this." He was trying yo answer, she was continuing, so he stopped looking at her as a way of being respectfully rude, if that makes any sense.

I think Ricky wants to wish him the best, but it's still very emotional, so he may be having conflicting feelings. There may be a very human part of him that wants this young man to hurt in the same way. He's not there yet to fully forgive him for what he did.

Dude, if he’s even remotely human, he dgaf about this accuser, who is trying to destroy him. He’s not just falsely accusing him (if it is false) of some illegal, bad thing. He picked the one thing except child murder, that Martin can never come back from and might even do some hard prison time. Wtf is wrong with these people like Amber herd and company, and maybe Martin’s accuser. Don’t they have a conscience?

I believe his no gesture expresses disagreement with the entire situation. The inconsistency comes with his mind running faster than speech. It just goes much more inside of him emotionally than comes out through words. Sure the speech was prepared cause nobody wants to say stupid things in such circumstances. One more thing to that, from psychological point of view, he is definately person who has a tendency to see bigger picture rather than focus on particular detail, therefore I went with my first statement that he reacts more to the entire situation with his head nodding. And he still didn't digest the act of nephew. I believe he means it really he wishes him the best but he still cannot believe that he did it and why and how he could. So it is undigested experience for him yet.
@Iram_Ali

My first impression was that he is managing his anger. He is distancing himself from his nephew and he's angry. He wants him to get help and move on, but he won't be able to forgive and forget for a long time. I believe that first part too, that he wanted to speak about the allegations earlier but had to stay quiet against his will. Is Ricky Martin guilty? I don't know, but at the moment I'm finding myself being more on his side. Maybe one day the nephew will give an interview, and then we'll be able to check his body language and determine better what really happened in this case. Spidy, it's great to see you again and this video was very educational, I really appreciate your hard work!! Thank you ❤️

Welcome back! I feel like his statement sounds like what people say on Facebook after they block someone that has put them in their place, after the individual is no longer able to respond. It's condescending in a self-righteous way. Perhaps slightly passive aggressive?

I wanted to note one exception in regards to asymmetrical facial expressions which reinforces the importance of baseline. Spidey mentioned "you'll never see someone smiling like this..." while demonstrating a lopsided smile, and for some people that can be normal if they have previously suffered a stroke or something like Bell's palsy which can cause weakness in the muscles on one side of the face. I just wanted to point that out in case anyone feels like someone they know is *always* talking to them with a look of contempt, to consider that there might be something else going on. But then again, maybe that person just really doesn't like you!
@Wonderkell74

This is a very good point. I’ve often thought about it because my smile is lopsided, but I suffered an injury to the left side of my face & still have numbness in my left cheek after 30 years. I was told at the time that the nerves had gone into a kind of shock to protect themselves & that eventually they might recover. I’m still lopsided though 😂

Yes, my partner had Bell's Palsy about a year ago. I panicked that it was a stroke and rushed him to hospital. Fast treatment with steriods meant "full" recovery within a few weeks, unless he is tired or emotional and then he has a slight droop. Makes it a bit harder for those that don't know him as well, to know if he is just being sarcastic or contemptuous.

This was so helpful in terms of baselining and you explained it so well. A big thank you! My feeling for the tilted head in the third clip is that Ricky Martin was lingering in the emotion that this person he is taking about needs help because there is something wrong with him. I think he wants to stress with that gesture that this person really is in need of an intervention.

Welcome back, what a great video! When he says nonsense, his eyebrows are asymmetric (or maybe it's just the angle?) and it definitely adds to the contempt. Also, the use of the word "nonesense" to describe such a devastating accusation. I believe it's used for distancing himself from this terrible thing that he was accused of. Last thing, I really hated the choice of the soft, pastel hue, lighting and filtering, because it made the whole thing look dreamy and fake, almost like in a Hallmark Christmas movie (or is it just my screen? Did you see it, as well, and had a hard time to relate, like I did?)

In regards to shaking your head when you should be nodding, I know I do it all the time. It took me forever to figure it out, but I think I finally have. In this situation, I could be thinking something like "that isn't the truth" causing me to shake my head, while I am saying it out loud in a different way, which should cause nodding. Like if someone asks me if it's ok they do something, I often shake my head thinking "that's no problem" while I state out loud "yeah, that's fine" which of course just makes me look like a liar, lol.
