My Progress Report for losing weight is...disappointing. I'm mad at #BodyMassIndex or BMI, and this video explains it all. #transgender #lgbtq #GenderAffirmingSurgery #AmiInThailand

Don't get discouraged if your recently started the exercise program to help you lose weight. Early on in the process you typically gain some muscle (which weighs more than fat), but you are also changing your metabolism as well to become more efficient in the process. So, after an initial gain or steady state, along with controlling your diet, your weight should eventually start coming down (I am sure you likely know this...). I am sure this is related to a BMI requirement for surgery, which very much varies surgeon to surgeon. At my initial consultation for mine (back in the day), my BMI was hovering around 32. I was told their cut off was 30. Complication risks with anesthesiology can greatly increase with higher values and that is why they had that rule/cutoff. I was told that if my BMI was 30 or higher at check-in for surgery it would be cause for cancelation/postponement. Of course, I was very nervous that day...but I was tracking it all along. At check in....my BMI was down to 28. (My last measurement was 29..but I think the night before prep helped to reduce it further...but I would not count on that...) I know of other surgeons who require a BMI of 25 or less. I was prepared to go on a starvation diet if necessary to meet any goal like that if necessary...but was happy that my surgeons was 30. That seemed much more achievable than 25 to meet at the time. But even my 28 was not exactly easy... (FYI - My current BMI is back up to 31 at the moment...my body really likes it higher.) Of course, best of luck in your journey with your requirements!

Thank you so much, Christine! In Thailand, they're asking for BMI of 28.5. I'm right now around 33, and the US surgeons were happy with 35. I'm on target, I think, and I'm now watching my weight decrease over the past about 10 days. Clearly, I got over that initial hump! But I can also look at myself in clothes and see I'm smaller, so I'm feeling good about that. I'm going to do what I can, and if I don't make the 28.5, the worst that happens is they charge me about another $1000 for increased risk. I'll say more along the way!
