Can you combine bodybuilding and mixed martial arts training?
Lee's Bodybuilding App: leehayward.com/app
Lee's Blog: leehayward.com/...
Lee's Facebook Page: leehayward.com/...
Just the other day I was asked this question on the TFB facebook page...
"Hey Lee, I've been doing Mehdis 5x5 program for strength and size and I'd like to ask is that will my strength and muscle gains lessen if I do MMA as well. Meaning mornings I do the 5x5 program and the evening MMA practice?"
When it comes to combining bodybuilding and other sports you need to realize that you have limited recovery abilities. If you are already following a high intensity strength training workout program and simply add in high intensity MMA training routine chances are you're going to quickly find out that it's just too much for your body to fully recover and you'll end up over training.
Bodybuilding training is very intense. So is MMA training. If you are going to incorporate both activities you'll have to find a compromise that allows you to get enough rest and recovery.
If you start doing MMA workouts you're going to have to scale back on your bodybuilding workouts in order to give your body adequate rest and recover. You can't give it 100% to bodybuilding training and also give it 100% to MMA training. There has to be a compromise somewhere in the middle.

Doing Muay Thai 3x a week, and try to go to the gym 4-5 days in a week in the morning as well (depends if allowed by work). It's hard but I do think if your diet is on point, it shouldn't be that hard. Just increase your calorie intake a bit and you should be good to go. And if you need an extra day of rest, take one, listen to da bodyyyyyy

Hey man :) It also depends on your age as well... doing MMA + pumping Iron and aiming for good performance in both is very taxing. Since I turned 25 a few years ago, I can no longer go beastmode and put my body through punishment ( doing intense sparrings weekly while training strength in the gym is NOT sustainable) because I started developping chronic pains and inflammations in the ribs, wrists, elbows, knees and shoulders. Not to mention the increased risk of injury ( I broke my knuckles while warming up, twisted my ankle while climbing the stairs ). Even with a high calorie, high protein and minerals diet, I would still suffer from such hardcore workouts. My advice would be to slowly reduce the volume or intensity of workouts as you age if you want to do both, OR, just focus on one discipline and progress safely. Getiing injured can be a handicap ( I can hardly scrub my own back in the shower because of the constant pain in shoulder joints)

This is my exact spilt. I train Muay Thai 3x a week (Mon and Wed is technique and bag work, and Fridays are for Sparring) in the evenings around 6PM and I lift 4-5 days a week (Pull workouts Mon and Wed) and (Push workouts on TUES, Thurs, and Sat) around lunch time between 11A-1PM. I do additional cardio on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6PM (30 mins on the elliptical machine). I’m 39 years old and I feel great doing these workout splits.

It's all about nutrition, guys. If you train martial arts and try to gain some muscles, you have to eat enough to cover both martial arts and weight lifting. If you stimulate your muscles enough and DONT overdo it, then yeah, it's possible to gain size and martial arts skills. I speak from experience.

I guess it depends on how far you want to go with one thing or the other. I feel like these two activities contradict one another. I used to play basketball, football, and run track, while trying to do bodybuilding at the same time. My body took a beating and I to stay in a caloric surplus I had to eat such a ridiculous amount that doing both wasn't a sustainable lifestyle for building muscle mass. Now I do two things 1. Bodybuilding - 5 days a week 2. Bikram Yoga - 5-7 days a week. I have found that both of these complement each other very well.

I find that every time I went back to bodybuilding style workouts I was more susceptible to injuries during bjj sparring. I think a good mindset if you're committed to martial arts, is to train in the gym to support it (e.g. work on compound movements and exercises that train your structural integrity and joint strength/stability).

I do muay Thai training twice a week, I do a sparing class straight after both of these so I do a lot of cardio. I also go to the gym 5 days a week and yet I'm still putting on muscle mass while I'm losing body fat, I find getting a goodnight sleep does the trick, lots of carbs and protein as well, but I do muaythai training about an hour after my gym sessions so I don't know if that's why, I seem to have no problem with doing both of these at the same time
@candytree5885
@candytree5885 9 жыл бұрын
I did myself for about 7 years muay thai and I can tell from my experience, bodybuilding and mma doesn't work together. It will probably burn you out, you won't be able to put enough energy into your bodybuilding sessions and your muay thai skills will lack after some time, taking into the account you also do something for your cardiovascular. When I was serious about competing, my coach did put together a season plan. That plan was divided into strength, speed strength (fast kicks, fast hand movement, coordination), cardio, HIT and a Cool down phase. In each of this phase we tried to maintain each aspect, but kept it to a minimal to 80% on the main aspect of the phase (f.e strength). We customized the plan based on my performance, for example if we knew my cardio was lacking, we just increased the phase time and put back a bit on the technique or strength training. Nearly every competitive sport which includes a lot of coordination, strength and cardio output, have a plan put together with different phases. You can't train 2 times a day very intensive it is just not possible. Even good mma fighters have 1 session a day for intense practise and 1 cooldown training like coordination. And with a job or school it is just not possible so take a plan and go through phases if your primary choice is to be good in a fighting sport! Totaly agree on all of your points!! *****

I think too many people who want to train their strength for fighting focus on what their body looks like rather than how they are performing. To me worry about how it's helping you as a fighter and less on how big your muscles are, I know fighters who may not look like much but have weight training in their training regimes and they are a hell of alot stronger than they look. Just being able to lift big and look big means very little in the martial arts world in my personal opinion... I tried out with Bodybuilding style training to help me fight better, I was eating big, gaining some decent extra mass, felt much stronger than I did before, eventually I started doing alot more Functional Strength work like kettlebell workouts for example and stuff similar to Crossfit, I feel much more benefits for me in terms of explosiveness, speed, functionality, striking power, and just overall fitness. That's just me tho everybody has their ways I ain't dissing anything or anyone I just feel functional strength training is much more necessary for any martial arts than bodybuilding is...

Lee I would like for you to make a video explaining all of the different grip positions for all exercises or just have a mini-series of grip positions for each exercise and the varying grip positions and techniques. For example of a video: Barbell bench press grip positions (i.e. close, normal, and wide) and explain how each one activates different muscle groups and why. You could talk about your preferred grip positions for each and every exercise. Other exercises ideas could be: pull-ups, chin-ups, dead-lift, squat, rows, lat pull downs, push-ups, overhead press, curls, and tricep pull-downs, dips etc. In my opinion this would be greatly beneficial to all your viewers. Please thumbs up my comment so Lee will see, thank you!

Excellent points made. I myself am an"older" guy ;) Have been doing MArts since I was a kid basically. And it is what keeps me in shape to this day I would say. Currently I am mostly BJJ, Muay Thai and some occasional JKD. Injuries are common, but should not be nagging you all the time. Reason why this happens is that unfortunately many BJJ schools roll and spar hard. Or you end up with training partners who think that practicing an armbar means to tap your training partner everytime you put it on. I personally have had the most progress with coaches who understood that and would focus on a rather slow but steady progress as well as a safe training environment. Many people, epecially young guys think that this equals ineffective and "pussy ass" training. Absolute garbage. Try to go full on Muay Thai for three months and then see what happens to your knees and leg joints. As for BB and MMA. Judging from personal experience, if you are an MMA guy, you are NOT a bodybuilder. Period. Both sports demand you full attention, focus, dedication and your absolute 100 percent physical capabilities. You wont last long if you try to travel both directions. Recipe for disaster. Do I still do strength stuff ? Yes. But you have to really plan ahead. I usually do strength on the weekend and give myself at least sunday off and maybe no MArts until tuesday. Also workouts are shorter. Deadlifts, dips, pullups, KB Swings, pushups, abs. That's it. Fewer sets and no extreme lifting protocols. Remember, you need recovery, plus strength for MMA is always an addition to your main focus of speed and endurance.

What do you think about mma training 2 times a week and following a fullbody novice program 2 a week?
@ARay18
@ARay18 9 жыл бұрын
I currently train intensively in both boxing and bodybuilding. My workouts are 5 hours long (3 to 4 times a week), which is obviously excessive and not for everyone. I start with about an hour of boxing, then do bodybuilding training for 1.5 to 2 hours, then another hour of boxing, and finally a lot of core work. If you are truly dedicated to both mma and BB you can create a program that accommodates both and make it work, but there are trade-offs. The biggest issue with mixing Boxing/mma and BB is simply the opportunity cost of engaging in either: when you are training for boxing, that is time you are not training for BB, and vice versa. And cutting into training time for either will hinder you in that respective activity. Also, you burn ridiculous amounts of calories in boxing training, so you really couldn't be able to simultaneously "bulk" in BB. On the flip side, though, boxing is a great tool for cutting, and it leaves me feeling better physically than when I just lifted weights. I have also found that boxing keeps both my upper and lower body loose and helps prevent injury in this way, particularly in work certain rotator cuff and back muscles on the speed bag and heavy bag that you may not hit in weight training. So, I have found that you CAN be both a fighter and bodybuilder, but there are trade-offs, the biggest one being that the time you spend engaging in training for one is time not spent on the other.

I don't have any intention of becoming a fighter or anything like this, or bodybuilder but It is a very nice Form a cardio. And when I don't feel like it for example if my muscles are to sore etc. I sometimes switch out muay thai sessions for swimming or playing some Beachvolleyball with friends soccer etc. Always depends this way you won't win any competition or become a serious athlete but will stay in shape and stay healthy over long years 😁.

lol yeah if you like getting the shit kicked out of you on a daily basis by all means mma is for you lol.. I totally agree. I think I'll stick to regular old body building. In reality you could probably just take a month or so of mma and be able to defend yourself better then 99% of the population.

Lee, I have to say, I am pretty disappointed with some of the material you've been pushing through via email. Most notably, the last one regarding dieting "myths". Much of the information cited in that article is severely outdated and incorrect.

It's quite difficult as Lee says and how your body responds to mixing 'em in is quite diverse between individuals. If you want to focus on martial arts, forget about doing a 2-day split-system where you go 6 days a week to work on each muscle group 3 times a week. 3-day split system, maybe, but I'd either go for a 2-day split and instead only hitting the gym 4 times a week whereas each muscle group gets hit twice a week or my personal favourite: full body workout 3 times a week with only one exercise per muscle group. I alternate the sets between sessions. High reps and a mere two sets on one session and the next I go for lower reps and four sets. The latter alternative works well for maintenance and eventual progress in strength, but it doesn't give much growth. Try taking a break from martial arts or only do light martial arts training and do the 2 day split, hitting the gym 6 days a week until you're satisfied, then go back fully on the martial arts and do the full body workout 3 times a week. :)

Bobby Tarantino Wrestling definitely requires a high amount of strength and muscle mass. Thanks for making me realize that the workout routine of wrestlers can help all athletes in other martial arts to focus on both weight training and combat training (though they might not require as much ssize as wrestlers)! 😊

Being lean and skilled is not better than being ripped and skilled, there’s a reason why martial arts have weight divisions, a guy who’s 5’10 185 pounds, can 1 rep 315 bench 1 rep 405 squat, 1 rep 495 deadlift, and trains 3 hours a week kickboxing/muay thai and 3 hours a week wrestling/bjj (basically a typical mma gym) will be much more deadly than a guy who’s 5’10 160 pounds, 1 rep on bench is 185 pounds, 1 rep on squat 275 pounds, 1 rep deadlift 350 pounds, but trains martial arts 15 hours a week, 7 hours muay thai/kickboxing 7 hours BJJ/wrestling Martial arts is literally athleticism x skill, your athleticism matters just as much as your skill is, Guy number one let’s say his athleticism is 8, his skill is 5 8 x 5 = 40 Guy number 2 let’s say his athleticism is 4 and his skill is 7 4 x 7 = 28 It’s going to be hard to grapple someone bigger & stronger than you and they have similar technique, vice versa it’s gonna be hard punching kneeing & kicking someone who’s bigger & stronger than you with similar technique, now granted when it comes to striking you’ll pull your full force so benefit of the doubt, but in a real street fight scenario a guy who’s twice as strong as you plus has 25-30 pounds on you who knows how to throw a proper roundhouse kick, will cause you extreme pain and probably break a bone, it’s the reality a lot of martial artist neglect, not the one’s competing as a career because they have weight divisions, I’m talking about your typical self defense/hobbyist Do atleast 1 hour full body workout 3 days a week Balance it into 3s 3 hours workout a week 3 hours striking a week 3 hours grappling a week And for cardio I recommend 9 miles a week, aka 3 miles a day, also about 8 minutes of jumprope = 1 mile running, so 24 minutes of jumprope = 3 miles running Rule of 3

Got a question. My goal isn't to have a very jacked physique... I like to keep an agile fighter physique like Bruce Lee and Spiderman... I started bodybuilding at home mid covid using tutorials from youtube, a barbell, a few dumbels and a bench press at home. I was underweight before, but over the last year I've gained over 22 lbs and am now 145 lbs... also, ive been doing martial arts for years but hadn't been doing it during my gaining phase... just 10 min of bagwork before lifting. i'm pretty happy with what i've achieved and want to get back into muay thai... previously i was doing mma but i wanna polish up my striking now that i've bulked up a bit. im planning to eat as much as i can in the coming days to prevent calorie deficit. i don't mind if my gain streak ends here, i mean it'd be a bonus if i can still gain a little more but what i really want to prevent his losing my progress bodybuilding at home. So long question short, is it easy to maintain an agile, ripped physique of 145 lbs doing muay thai... as long as calories are balanced and i focus maybe 10-25% of my training time on weights?

When I was in my late 20's I was in the best shape I have ever been in and looked amazing...I am 5'8" and I weighed 170 lbs and had a 31 inch waist, so had very little body fat...what was I doing? I was weight training in the morning for an hour (5 days a week), then ran 3+ miles at lunch and after work I ether swam or did a stationary bike and then on the weekends I either did a long run (6 miles ish) or went for a long bike ride (25+ miles)...so consider that regimen.
