Bodycam: Man Allegedly Assaults, Spits on Cops During Arrest for Violent Threats

Bodycam footage has been released showing the arrest of Devon Whitmire by police in Asheville, North Carolina on May 17th. Officers initially took Whitmire into custody on a warrant for communicating violent threats to his family. However, the situation escalated when Whitmire allegedly assaulted the cops during the arrest, resulting in additional charges being filed against him.
The bodycam video depicts officers struggling with Whitmire as they attempt to detain him. Punches appear to be thrown and a physical altercation ensues between Whitmire and the police on the scene. In response to the incident shown in the footage, the Asheville Police Department charged Whitmire with multiple counts of assault on law enforcement officers. The release of the bodycam video footage came after a judge's order making it public record, stemming from community outrage over a bystander's video clip of part of the arrest circulating online. Not necessarily. The phrasing was poor, yes but he did nothing wrong in regards to notifying the police of his firearm (under normal circumstances and it were somebody else). If a cop asks you where it’s located, they’re asking for their safety so they can respond accordingly if you reach for it *or* if the situation is escalating. “Don’t worry about it” while backing up is escalating the situation. I got into a wreck recently and I always have a firearm in my car. When the tow truck came, I let the cop know so I could get it and secure it. They’re response: “well you better secure it”.

That wasn’t a mental illness we watched, that was a criminal. He was lying to try and keep from getting caught and then he fought every way he could. He’s been arrested like 26 times I think I seen. He’s a criminal who uses “mental illness” as a crutch to keep from being held responsible. That’s learned behavior and usually from a young age!

The community was inflaming the situation themselves. The guy was kicking and spitting at the officers, but the community people there were blaming the officers. The media probably came along afterwards and interviewed the community, and got false information from them. The police have to be careful after the George Floyd incident when dealing with criminals. I actually worked with this kid when he was in like 4th-5th grade. His twin brother was so sweet and kind but this guy was evil and unstable. He threw a book at someone in a classroom and stormed out one time and in the hallway some random mom was walking to have lunch with her kid and he punched her in the stomach so hard she needed medical attention. He was violent and disturbed from the get-go. He had a loving and supportive family, but the demons in his head and poor choices kept him from succeeding.
