This is the first of a series of "Hat Block Hacks".
Experimental hat blocks made from easy to find, inexpensive materials, that you can make at home. They aren't perfect by any means. But if you are creative, handy, thrifty or just want to be, then there maybe some ideas here for you.
In this video I'll show you how I made a hat block out of an old hat, wood glue, sawdust & a sealer. It cost under 20 bucks. The time to make the faux block was around an hour or effort. Most of the time was waiting for the products to dry.

Yes. Thinking outside of the box, with materials at hand was how I started. I still have these sawdust forms and they are still very sturdy.

I have been using an electric knife to carve closed cell foam insulation. Hat blocks are a challenge, but so crucial. Thanks for the video!

@@bodyofknowledge101 I will be in my studio tomorrow cutting a new hat block and maybe some shoe lasts, so will try to remember to take my phone. I like to leave it behind so I'm not distracted.

@@missioncreekfarm7715 Turn the ringer off. I've been pondering shoes lasts as well. I often find them at the thrift stores. I look forward to seeing your projects.

That's cool. It took about a day or so for each layer to dry when I tried it. Many layers of sawdust. I didn't, but should have sealed the inside with a product (glue/sealant) as a bit of loose wood dust flakes off. I made one hat on the form I made. The block held up pretty well. On my second attempt on the same block, I noticed the block softned a bit, so another layer of sawdust (inside) or hardener on the outside might solve that problem.

My partner makes the blocks you see in the videos. For Your Head. Ebay also has a wide selection. There are a few hat block makers in UK, Australia and probably a few in the states also. ManHatco is one.
