When I was working for CN before I retired back in 06, we used wire to do Manganese. We couldn't get any part of the work area above 500 degrees. When welding we sat off to the side and used a fan to blow away the fumes or we wore a resperator. We also wore hearing protection for grinding. Forgot, we also used arc air to get rid of dead metal. Our grinders were Hy- frequency.

it is 1" from the weld area at 500 degrees. smoke cannons or fans to keep the fumes away as manganese is incredibly harmful to humans. but i believe these guys are in a different country where processes are different

I'm not sure what they're welding with but I would NEVER preheat/postheat a frog weld. Get it over 500° and you're screwed

Also, there is rarely enough time for pre/post heating. A lot of times these are being welded between the passage of trains.

Welding fabricated rail has to be preheated and kept between 350 -450 degrees, if you don't it will crack after a couple of trains run over the crossings

We're not allowed to pre heat frogs where I work. We have to keep them below700 degrees, ideally 500.

It seems a little disconcerting that you have to "preheat" but can cool with dry ice.
